THE COACHES: Marietta s Stacia Shrider, a 2008 graduate of Baldwin Wallace, is in her first year as the head coach of the Pioneers. Shrider is 10-15 at Marietta. Kristie Maravalli, a 1993 Susquehanna graduate, is in her 14th season coaching the Blue Streaks. Maravalli is 160-201 at John Carroll. SERIES NOTES: This is the 58th meeting between the two schools on the hardwood. The teams first met in 1984 with Marietta winning 63-62. John Carroll leads the all-time series 36-21. John Carroll has won 16 of the last 20 meetings. The teams have split the season series the past two years. LAST MEETING: Marietta defeated John Carroll by the score of 71-61 this past Saturday in Marietta. The Pioneers led 37-28 at halftime and used a huge 47-21 advantage on the boards to hang on for the victory. Freshman Emily Jones scored a career-high 15 points off the bench to lead Marietta. Junior Paige Lamb scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while senior Krissy Rowe added 10 points. Missy Spahar led JCU with 21 points and eight rebounds. Allison Lustig added 17 points for the Blue Streaks. SCOUTING THE PIONEERS: Currently, Marietta is ranked 10th in the OAC in scoring offense (59.9 ppg) and 10th in scoring defense (65.8 ppg). Tori Dixon is the Pioneers leading scorer averaging 11.1 ppg. Dixon leads the OAC with 2.6 three-pointers per game. Candice Alexander is averaging 10.3 ppg and leads Marietta with 6.7 rebounds per game. NEW OAC TOURNAMENT FORMAT: The Ohio Athletic Conference will unveil a new format for the annual basketball tournament in 2012. On Monday, Feb. 18 the #5 seed hosts #8 and #6 hosts #7. On Tuesday, Feb. 19 the #5/#8 winner plays at #4 and the #6/#7 winner plays at #3. The semifinals are on Thursday, Feb. 21 with #1 hosting the 8-5-4 bracket winner and #2 hosting the 7-6-3 winner. The championship game will be played on Saturday, Feb. 23 at the highest remaining seed.

The Pioneers started women s basketball in 1974 and Marietta defeated Glenville 44-38 in the college s first varsity game. Marietta went 9-4 in the 1974-75 inaugural season. 23RD OAC TOURNAMENT APPEARANCE: Marietta College is making its 23rd overall and second consecutive appearance in the OAC Women s Basketball Tournament. The Pioneers are 5-22 in OAC Tournament play. Marietta s last tournament victory was a 65-49 win over Heidelberg in 1996. MARIETTA VS. JOHN CARROLL IN OAC TOURNEY: Marietta and John Carroll have met three times in the OAC Tournament with the Blue Streaks winning all three previous meetings. The two schools met in the first round in 1997, 1998 and 1999. John Carroll downed Marietta 82-55 in 1997, 100-63 in 1998 and 66-52 in 1999. STRONG FINISH: The Pioneers won four of their last five games during the regular season. Marietta defeated Heidelberg 69-64 on Winter Weekend in Marietta. The Pioneers then snapped a 50-game losing streak to Capital with a 54-53 win in Columbus. Following a tough loss to Baldwin Wallace, the Pioneers defeated Mount Union in overtime 89-84 and John Carroll 71-61. LAST FIVE GAMES: Marietta has four players averaging double figures in points over the last five games. Tori Dixon leads the way averaging 16.4 ppg. Candice Alexander averages 12.2 points and 8.0 rebounds. Krissy Rowe is averaging 11.4 points, while Heather Booth is averaging 10.8 points. BENCH STRENGTH: Freshman Emily Jones has had a break out week with sophomore Lindsay Deemer hampered by an injury. Jones set a career-high for points in consecutive games. She scored nine in Marietta s overtime win against Mount Union and then led the Pioneers with 15 points against John Carroll. TAKE CARE OF THE BALL: Marietta will need to take better care of the basketball tonight if they want to advance in the OAC Tournament. The Pioneers are averaging 20.5 turnovers per game this season, worst in the OAC.
