USASF 10 REGIONAL MEETINGS Summer 2010

2

In an effort to offer affordable local educational opportunities, the USASF has decided to restructure their yearly Coaches Conference by offering Regional Meetings during the Spring, Summer and Fall of 2010. In the summer of 2009, the USASF piloted an initiative to offer more regionalized events on a smaller scope as a way to reach more of its members. The feedback we received from coaches for hosting localized events was so positive that we are expanding that program to offer many more throughout the country in the Spring, Summer and Fall of 2010. The USASF is offering seven stand alone Regional Meetings to bring those same high quality presentation speakers, seminars, and classes to an area closer to the USASF Members. Besides the professional development classes that will be offered at each of the meetings, USASF Coach Credentialing, Re-Credentialing, and AACCA Safety Certification will also be offered. Each Regional Meeting will be host to some featured guest speakers. You will have the opportunity to learn from the best choreographers in the choreography work-shops, and hear industry leaders such as Morton Burge, Debbie Love and Jon Metz*. Each Regional Meetings will host Safety Judges Training courses as well. This course can be completed by USASF Members who is sponsored by an USASF Member Event Producer, or can be taken as an audit class for coaches and choreographers who would like to have a more in-depth understanding of the rules. *Specific speakers and courses could change. 1. Decide on the date and location that are ideal for you and your staff. (Specific details listed on pages 6 through 12). 2. Print the 2010 Regional Meeting Registration Form, located on Page 13 of this brochure. 3. Fill out the form completely, including the add-on classes/sessions you would like to attend. 4. Fax or mail, with payment. 5. Contact the hotel that coordinates with your Regional Meeting. Please be mindful of the deadline for the special room rates, and mention the USASF to get the best rate. 6. Get your coaches prepared to join you for an amazing set of classes, networking and conversation! Each meeting will include: General Membership Meeting USASF Coach Credentialing Each Regional Meeting will have a General Membership Meeting designed to be an open forum for coaches to discuss current trends and issues in the industry. The highlight of this meeting, however, is to receive input and suggestions from coaches as the beginning stages of the rules process for the 2011-2013 season. Les Stella (USASF Rules Director) and representatives from the National All-Star Cheer Coaches Congress (NACCC) will be on hand to listen to coaches suggestions, foster a healthy debate on the issues, and take suggestions back to the rules committee to formulate a slate of proposed rules changes that will then be voted on, in January, by the all-star industry. This is your opportunity to be a part of the rules process and have your voice be heard. General Courses Offered During each session there will be a course offered that is geared for Gym Owners and Program Directors; as well as a course offered that is geared towards the hands on coaches. It is recommended that you bring your entire coaching staff to the Regional Meetings, then after the event have a sharing sessions where all the coaches share what they took from each of the courses. Specific courses will vary by Regional Meeting, a final outline will be available 10 days prior to the event. Professional Development Courses Each meeting will offer four 50 minute course sessions with a focus on educating and informing all-star directors and gym owners. Attendees will have their choice of classes to attend each session and may include such topics as: * An inside look at scoring * Setting your team up for success * The future of your gym * Skill building sessions * Marketing * Budgeting & gym profitability * Risky Business Choreography Workshop Whether you hire a choreographer or you choreograph your own routines, this workshop is for you! This 3 hour workshop is packed with information and how-to tips for coaches of all levels and experience. You will have the opportunity to learn from one of the top choreographers in the industry. They will share with you their secrets for creating a winning routine. This extended session is designed to give you an in-depth look at the ENTIRE process. Learn the formula all the choreographers use and tricks of the trade to make those great routines. The USASF, as the governing body for all-star cheer, has developed the level guidelines used by most of the competition companies in the industry as the standard for proper progressions in teaching and coaching all-star cheerleaders. The USASF developed a credentialing program for coaches that parallels the levels and tests them on their ability to safely teach skills. There are three components involved in the credentialing process: Written, Hands-on and Practical Field Experience. The hands-on portion will be offered at each regional meeting. AACCA Safety Certification The American Association of Cheerleading Coaches & Administrators offers a seminar and examination which certifies cheerleading coaches in SAFETY and RISK MANAGEMENT. As the one program that is recognized as the standard of care for cheerleading safety and risk management it should be the safety certification that EVERY allstar cheer coach receives. The safety seminar is a three hour classroom lecture course (no hands-on instruction) followed by a two hour window to complete a 100 question open book exam. AACCA Safety Certification is a required component of the USASF Gym Certification Program. Rules Audit Course The USASF conducts annual rules and safety training for judges in an effort to educate them on the current season rules and legalities. Traditionally, this course was only open to competition company representatives and established independent legality judges. The USASF is pleased to announce the Safety Judges Certification course is now open to All-Star Cheer Coaches who wish to become more versed in the legality rules. Coaches who choose to audit this course will receive the same education and training as the safety judges. This full day, classroom style course, includes an overview of all rules at each level. It will include some examples of what can be performed within these rule limits, and a look at the elements that make skills illegal. 4

Pre-registration is REQUIRED All coaches interested in being credentialed at a Regional Meeting must pre-register, by completing the items listed below. Preparation (Prior to Credentialing Session) Prior to attending the conference, each coach should complete and bring with them:. 1) Credentialing Registration Form (Only one per program is needed for this form). Please complete and fax in this form, located on page 15 at least 10 days prior to secure an appointment time during the Regional Meeting you are attending. 2) General Information Sheet This can be found on page 16 of this packet. Please complete and bring with you to your hands on appointment. 3) Practical Field Experience Validation Form This form must be complete and signed by the gym owner/all-star director at your gym. If you are the gym owner/all-star director, you may verify for yourself that you have coached the required hours to move on to the higher levels of credentialing. The coach also signs this form at the very bottom. This form can be found on page 17 of this packet. 4) Test Questions All of the test questions can be accessed from web site, through your gym member profile. If you have any questions about this log in and password, please speak Angela Jones in the USASF office at (901) 251-5914 or v i a e-mail at AJones@usasf.net. 5) Answer Sheet for your responses to the Written Tests Everyone needs to complete the current written test, for all skill levels they are credentialing or re-credentialing through. These answer sheets are provided on page 18 and 19 of this packet. USASF Membership Credentialing is open to members of the USASF. If you are a current member of the USASF you will need to verify that your membership is current (you have paid your membership fee). If you are not current you will need to renew your membership. This can be done by logging on to your user profile, which is located at www.usasf.net. The log in area is located in the top right hand corner of the home page. If you do not know your user name and/or password you will need to contact Angela Jones, at (901) 251-5914 or via e-mail at AJones@usasf.net. If you are NOT a member of the USASF you will need to visit USASF.net and under the MEMBERS tab click Join the USASF. You will choose either GYM membership or COACH membership. If a GYM is a member of the USASF, all the coaches that work at that gym are also considered members and do not need to join as coach members as well. If you do not work for a USASF member gym you will need to join the USASF as a COACH member to be eligible to participate in the Coach Credentialing program. At the Credentialing Session You will be meeting one-on-one with an instructor who will ask you a series of skill related questions to evaluate your proficiency in teaching such skills following industry standards for technique and safety. You will also be asked to discuss safety, progression philosophy and emergency procedures. It is recommended that you only register for the skill sets and levels which you are truly qualified to coach. The Credentialing Program is a means by which the instructor evaluates your ability to coach at specific levels and then signs off on the skills which you currently possess, and not a means for preparing to coach higher levels. Educational opportunities such as coaches conferences and practical experience in the gym working under a mentor/head coach, who has already demonstrated their proficiency, are the best ways to get the education you need to receive your credentials. Additional Information If you have any further questions about this process, please contact your regional director. 14
