A Fresh Start to the New Year You will notice the bright new pool deck when you walk into the Aquatic Centre. Thank you for your patience while this refurbishment took place. The Aquatic Centre was closed from 8 December until 14 January so the concretors and tilers could move into action. The pools were drained, tiles chipped off and floor stripped bare. New concrete was rendered, tiles were laid and a bright coat of fresh paint was carefully applied resulting in this terrific new, non-slip surface. Our squad swimmers will be particularly excited to hear that the new Omega starting blocks will be installed soon. It s been a sweltering few weeks, so many of our Aquatic Centre families took advantage of the intensive swimming programs that we held from 14-25 January. It was a great way to beat the heat, but more importantly to revise vital swimming skills that are a must for young children living in Australia. Royal Life Saving statistics show that children under five are the age group most at risk of drowning, an average of 30 children under the age of five drowning in Australia each year for the past ten years. Swimming pools are the biggest risk followed by dams, rivers and the beach. We hope that by offering intensive programs we can reinforce the skills learnt during the year and bring our students up to the next level of capability. These holidays we trialled a new concept by combining all our 25m groups into one class that ran for 45 minutes. This was very well received and we ve had terrific feedback so we will consider extending some of our younger classes to 45 minutes in our April holiday program.
The Toowoomba Grammar Swim Club had its best result ever at the 2018 Queensland State Championships held in Brisbane from 15-21 December 2018. Our Club held a Top 10 position for most of the week, but we were bumped out when there were so many multi-class competitors for other teams gaining points in divisions we couldn t enter. As a result, we finished in 14th place. A big congratulations to our gold medallists William Salmond and Isabelle Mason but all swimmers showed true grit and skill to achieve impressive results.
