wind speed wind direction A Record Breaking Race Wednesday Wonders Summer Series 18-19 Race 11 (12 Dec 18) The handicapper was busy and made a record number of handicap adjustments. The median start time of seconds was the slowest this series. It s necessary to go back to race 10 of the WW winter series to find a winning margin greater than the 14 minutes 3 seconds recorded in this race. Yachts that are usually among the fastest in the fleet, found themselves with slower than expected elapsed times in the longest race of the series. Despite starting with a breeze of 17 knots the 9.8 nautical mile course 25 was shortened. Observations at Fawkner Beacon indicated there was a northerly breeze of about 12 knots for the afternoon. What the observations didn t show was the patches of variable breezes that became more widespread as the race progressed. Being able to find and make good use of the slivers of breeze contributed to an unusual result. 25 10 5 0 WW Summer Series 18-19 Race 11 Wind Speed & Direction 13 13 14 14 Wind Speed 16 17 11 10 8 10 11 11 Wind Gusts 19 22 17 17 12 12 12 13 13 13 Wind Direction 360 360 360 360 360 360 360 22.5 22.5 22.5 time 16 16 17 17 360 3 270 225 180 135 90 45 0 BARNSTORMER (Brian Barnes) won Start of the day for the second week in succession. PIPPA (Jeffrey Woolhouse) won the race by the biggest margin in 6 series. Second was BON VIVANT (Russell Keays). ARC DE TRIOMPHE finished 3 rd some 5 minutes seconds later but recorded the fastest elapsed time. The 2 nd place by BON VIVANT takes her to the top of the aggregate with BABYDOLL (Brendan Kruger) 2 nd and HOT CHIPPS (John Chipp) 3 rd. The contest for the Shebessa Shield is now led by PIPPA and BON VIVANT both on 18 points whilst RAZZLE DAZZLE (Andrew Stopp) leads the contest for the Noelle Coram Trophy.

PIPPA started the series with a 10 minute handicap which has been reduced as the series progressed. She started from 2 nd place seconds late for her 5 minute handicap. By the first rounding of SYC she had established a lead of 18 minutes 16 seconds. During the last 2 legs of the race, which she sailed in 38 minutes 31 seconds, this lead was reduced to 14 minutes and 3 seconds. PIPPA crossed the finish line at :49:45 after sailing the course in 2:14:45 - the 16 th fastest elapsed time of the race. She sailed the course minutes 42 seconds faster than WILLARIE (Graeme Kaufman) who shared the same 5 minute handicap and 37 minutes 35 seconds faster than DOLPHIN PLAY (John Brennan). PIPPA has completed all 9 races in the series so far and has three top ten finishes. She moved from th to 8 th in the aggregate. BON VIVANT has also completed 9 races and has three top ten finishes that includes two 2 nd places. She started from 10 th place 24 seconds late for her 24 second handicap. After sailing the first 3 legs of the course in 1:35:06 she moved into 2nd place at the first rounding of SYC 4. It took BON VIVANT 34 minutes 18 seconds to sail the last 2 legs of the course and she crossed the finish line at 16:03:48. She shared the same 24 minute handicap with SURI (Rick Blanck) but was able to sail the course 10 minutes 32 seconds faster. BON VIVANT moves up from 6 th to be 1 st in the aggregate and becomes the 5 th yacht this series to hold top spot. ARCH DE TRIOMPHE (Murray/Davis/Taylor) collected her first podium finish of the series when she crossed the finish line at 16:04:23 35 seconds behind BON VIVANT. She started from 17 th place, 11 seconds late for her 36 minute handicap her worst start of the series. Her previous eight starts have been 5 seconds or less. At the rounding of SYC 4 ARCH DE TRIOMPHE was in 5 th place 23 minutes 3 seconds behind the leader. She was able to reduce that gap in the last 2 legs of the race and after sailing the entire course in the fastest elapsed time 1:58:23 she crossed the finish line in 3 rd place. ARCH DE TRIOMPHE started the series with a handicap of 43 minutes which has been reduced progressively. As a result her she has been improving her finish position and she moves up from 42 nd to 32 in the aggregate.
