UTBFN YOUTH NEWS GREETING JUNIOR BASSMASTERS School should be out for everyone now and the fishing season is in full swing, all the local lakes are at full pool and busting wide open as the water has finally warmed up. Many youth are actively fishing already, So as you prepare to start the UTBFN Youth Tournament season on July 18th at Rockport Reservoir, I would like to pass along some key points. First, remember that the qualifiers are a test of skills for each individual angler. Boat captains are asked to keep their assistance to a bare minimum, they will not fish for you but will be there as mentors. Of course, you can always ask your boat captains for assistance with such things as snags, backlashes, and trolling motor driving. Below are some bass fishing fundamentals to ensure you are ready to go. Please pay attention to the following items. Casting Accuracy. Now that you re on summer vacation spend some time practicing your casting skills, with your favorite bait-casters and spinning outfits. Being able to put your lure in the strike zone will be a key factor to your success. The best thing to do is set a target in the backyard (old coffee can or pie plate) and cast from different distances with different lures until you can consistently hit the target. Practice, practice and more practice will make you a better angler. Fishing Lines and Knots: Put new line on your reels and remember to change it often through out the year for maximum performance. New line won t twist as easy as old line and will perform better when you have those winning fish on. Make sure you are using the right lb. test line for the reel you are using, if your not sure of what size line to use check the spool for the recommended line size and capacity. Using the incorrect line size on the reel creates problems (backlashes, loops and twists) and does not allow you to cast as far and as accurate. Tie good knots and don t be bashful about re-tying often (it s a good habit to learn), especially after fighting fish or casting your lure into heavy cover or dragging it across the rocks. Water Temperature: Early in the season, anglers should consider water temperature when making decisions on where to fish, lures to fish and how long to stay on a particular spot if no fish are being caught. Hook Selection: Use the appropriate hook size for the bait and technique you are fishing. If in doubt, feel free to ask your boat captain what size hook would you use with this particular bait. Last but not least make sure your hooks are sharp and rust free. Many more tips, tricks and strategies can be found by reading BASSMASTER Magazine. Each issue is packed with important information that will help each of us become better anglers. See you on the water soon!
