Page 8 The Morning Line Thursday, September 18, 2014 Bethpage Park, NY The Harriman Cup - Saturday, Sept. 13, 2104 The 30th Annual Harriman Cup took place on Saturday, September 13, 2014 at Bethpage State Park. Joe Meyer, the President of the United States Polo Association, was on hand to give this year s Harriman Cup Award to Stephen A. Orthwein. Steve Orthwein is one of the Co-Founders of The Harriman Cup; he was also the former President and Chairman of the USPA. Steve graduated from Yale University in 1968, where he led the school s team to the National Collegiate Polo Championship in 1967 and 1968. According to Orthwein, I am very honored. College polo is very important. It s probably the funnest polo people will play in their lifetime. I m delighted to have had the opportunity to support it and play in it. Past Harriman Cup honorees include polo superstars Nacho Figueras and Nic Roldan; UVa alumnus David Walentas of Two Trees Farms and the Bridgehampton Polo Club; Lezlie Hiner, who founded the highly successful Work To Ride Program; and Ambassador William S. Farish III, the former Chairman of Churchill Downs, who also graduated from Virginia. After a brief bike polo exhibition, the annual polo match commenced at noon between the alumni teams from the University of Virginia and Yale. For the 5th year in a row, the UVa squad triumphed once again with the final score of 16 to 7. UVa teammate Chevy Beh was designated the match MVP. Also playing for Virginia were Adam Klopp, Tristan Phillimore, and LJ Lopez III. Playing for Yale were Liz Brayboy, Jim DeAngelis, Seppi Colloredo-Mansfeld, and Steve Orthwein. Over 1,000 revelers attended the day-long festivities where the first 250 guests received free shades courtesy of Knockaround Sunglasses. There to judge the Best Looks of the Harriman Cup were Karen Klopp of What2WearWhere. com, Dean Zacharias of Proper Kid Problems, and artist Annika Connor. During the awards ceremony, several winners were announced. Best Dressed Man: Ryan Ruff Best Dressed Woman: Landon Wellford Best Hat (Woman): Alexandra Powell Best Hat (Man): Aidan Domin Best Fascinator: Meg Towner Best Tailgate: The Yale School of Managment Best Dog: Zoey the Shorkie (owned by Mike Taylor & Dennis Cheng) This year, BP Healthcare, Monster Energy, What2WearWhere.com, and Frava were the generous main sponsors of the Harriman Cup. All the funds raised will benefit the undergrad polo teams at the University of Virginia and Yale. They will also help rebuild Yale s college polo program after the 2009 closure of the historic Yale Armory. The Harriman Cup was founded in 1984 to commemorate the life of W. Averell Harriman, a 1913 Yale graduate and polo player, who was the former Governor of New York, former U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain and the Soviet Union, and was the U.S. Secretary of Commerce under President Truman.
