WEEKLY NEWSLETTER AUGUST 4, 2017 Renewal Night Tonight
Course Update A quick update on some works completed on course this week. The finer weather allowed to us to make a herbicide application to fairways and greens surrounds although with the frost delays, heavy fog and showers yesterday afternoon we still have 3 fairways to spray next week, as these events make for unsprayable conditions so hopefully the weather is kind next week and we will finish these applications. We managed to locate the drainage outlet on the 16th greenside bunker which is now fully unblocked, renovated and back in play. A further 8 bunkers have been renovated this week and a further 8 next week. This weekend will see some bunkers GUR due to matting issues which will be resolved next week. On a negative note the two pictures below are from Wednesday afternoons after members competition has ceased, I don t need to explain these situations. I would hope that playing partners within these groups will start to call out there fellow members on certain actions from not repairing pitch marks to taking divots from greens. We all need to be accountable for the condition of our own golf course. To finish on a positive note the below picture is fantastic proof that our renovation practices are paying off this is our 12th green 3 seasons ago we had no root growth past 1 inch we are now pushing past 4 inches, with the growing season about to begin we are hoping to push these roots down to 6 inches. For our mixed poa annua and bent grass greens this very positive as poa annua typically is prone to very shallow root systems hence the heightened disease pressure in tougher environmental conditions. Golf Premier League We ve got our 6 Teams ready to go for the 3 week trial starting on August 12th! This Premiership Style competition will be played over 3 Saturday s in August and is sure to generate some lively banter on the course and in the Norman Room.
Jono Thorpe s 100 Green Bottles was the first team filled, and will take on The Chairman s Men comprising half the SLC Board, with the Club Captain and VC prize recruits. The Vets are represented by in the rough (their original team name of cock ups was vetoed by the stewards albeit a nautical term) and will do battle with the Cardboard Cutouts a team hand-picked by Daniel Popa. Franco s Tree Irons take on Shaun Smith s Sausage Doggers in the final match of the round. All players will receive a welcome email and a link to the competition website. This initial 3 week period is a free trial to gauge interest, with the view to expanding the competition over a longer season finalised by presentations and a Brownlow style best and fairest. Light It Up Golf Next Friday 11th August we are hosting Light it up Golf! This 9 Hole Competition will be played over mixture of front and back nine holes with tee off being a 6:30pm shotgun. It s a 3 person Ambrose, open to members and guests, with 2 teams starting from each tee. Gia s off to America

Weekly Golf Results Swing it easy when it s breezy is a good tip in the wind and there wouldn t be a more appropriate time to apply this than in the Saturday Stableford event. With gusts of wind getting up to 100kmh scores took a tumble with the best results of the day coming from Mario Tizzani winning C Grade with 32 points and Angelo Puopolo winning B Grade also with 32 points. The A Graders struggled a little more in the breezy conditions with David Brand winning A Grade with 24 points. Well done to the members who survived their round! The winds on Saturday proved to be good practice for the Sunday Stableford with a win again in B Grade for Angelo Puopolo with 37 points. A grade was won by Joel Sheldon with 35 points and Bernie Malcolm winning C grade with 38 points. The Monday vets had 29 play in great conditions. In VA grade we had a three way tie for first between Rob McGregor, Jim Higgins and Keong Chan all with 37 points. Second was Doug McQualter with 34 points. In VB grade the winner was Alan Hussey with 35 points, second was tie between Andrew Vizard and David Whiteside both with 34 points. Next week is the Vets Monthly Medal. On Tuesday Choy Hong won the Ladies Stableford with 33 points 3 points clear of Mariko Suvoltos. Vickee Lynch picked up the NTP on the 2nd with a fine iron shot! The Wednesday Par event had some of the players hitting it out of sight earlier in their rounds due to fog. Damien Gnezda is in fine form winning A Grade for the second week in a row with -1 on a countback from Daniel Popa. B Grade was won by Robert Laski with +3 and C Grade winner Bruce Cahoon also had +3. Well played and good luck to Damien Gnezda on his hat-trick next week! Apparently 3 in a row is a round of drinks for the bar, I m sure your playing partners will be encouraging!
