LAST TIME OUT Four American University women s basketball players scored in double-figures to help AU defeat Lehigh, 71-58, in the Patriot League Semifinals Sunday and send the Eagles to just their third league championship game in school history. AU was nursing a six-point lead into the last minutes of the first half when senior guard Angel McNatt sandwiched a pair of three-pointers around a steal and layup by senior Chanel Spriggs to give the Eagles a commanding 36-22 lead heading into the lockerroom. American maintained its lead in the second period by shooting 65 percent (13-of-20) in the stanza. Lehigh managed to cut the lead to single-digits just once, when Jessica DePalo scored two of her game-high 22 points with 3:30 left to make the score 62-53. However, Joanna Barnes hit a jumper on the ensuing possession and followed that up with a pair of free throws to push the lead back to 13. Lehigh got no closer than 10 the rest of the way. Barnes and senior Kaitlin Schuyler each scored 13 points. Schuyler, who scored all of her points in the second period, added five assists and four steals. Spriggs and junior Chanel Hunt added 12 points and 10 points, respectively. McNatt provided a spark off the bench with eight points on three-of-five shooting in just 15 minutes. American made it to the Colonial Athletic Association championship game in 1987 and 1998, but lost both those games. The Eagles have made just one postseason appearance, in 1998 when they lost to St. Joseph s in the first round of the Women s National Invitational Tournament. THE OPPONENT AND THE HISTORY This is the ninth meeting between the Raiders of Colgate University and American University. The Eagles hold a 6-2 advantage in the series. The two teams split the season series, with AU pulling out a 58-57 win on Cotterell Court on Jan. 23 when Chanel Hunt hit a 15-foot fallaway jumper at the buzzer for the win. However, Colgate avenged that loss with a dominating performance at Bender Arena, handing the Eagles their second worst loss of the season, 79-61. The Raiders enter tonight s contest on a five-game win streak, which is tied for their longest of the season. In fact, CU has only lost twice since AU defeated the Raiders in Hamilton. ON THIS DATE The Eagles have never won on March 10. AU is 0-2 all-time on 3/10. In 1988, American dropped a heartbreaker to UNC-Wilmington, 67-66 in overtime, in the first round of the Colonial Athletic Association tournament. The only other game AU has played on the 10th of March was against James Madison in 1994, and that was hardly memorable for the Eagles. AU lost, 80-52. UP NEXT The winner of today s contest will play in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Since the first round of the women s tournament is at host sites, the possibilities are vast if the Eagles were to win today against Colgate. Some likely destinations could be Storrs, Conn., Knoxville, Tenn., Durham, N.C., Austin, Texas, or possibly even State College, Pa. The first round of the NCAA Tournament is scheduled for March 20-21. Patriot League Standings (Final Regular Season) PATRIOT OVERALL STANDINGS W L Pct. W L Pct. 1. Colgate 10 4.714 18 9.667 2. AU IN THE PL TOURNAMENT The Eagles are 3-2 in the three PL tournaments in which they have participated, after Sunday s win over Navy. However, American has never been to the league s championship game. AU lost in the first round of its first PL Tournament in 2002 against Colgate, 68-79. The Eagles avenged that loss in the first round in 2003, beating the Raiders 71-65. However, AU lost to Army in the second round, 73-78. AU IN THE POSTSEASON American is 8-20 all-time in the postseason, including its time in the East Coast Conference, the Colonial Athletic Association, the Patriot League and one appearance in the Women s National Invitational Tournament. The Eagles have never won a league championship tournament. AU has participated in two league championship games, in 1987 vs. James Madison (a 62-74 loss) and in 1998 vs. Old Dominion (a 49-82 loss), both in the CAA. In fact, the Eagles have exited in the first round in 10 of 18 league tournaments in which they have participated. Pct. n/a * Statistics are as of March 1, 2004 SPRIGGS NO. 2 IN NCAA IN STEALS PER GAME As of March 1, senior guard Chanel Spriggs is ranked second in the National Collegiate Athletic Association s Division I in steals per game with 3.9 steals in each game which she has played. Spriggs has currently nabbed 105 steals in 27 games. Spriggs, who is known for her thievery, set AU s career steals record earlier this season when she pilfered six balls from UMBC. She currently has 327 steals and continues to stretch her lead in that category every game. Spriggs also holds the top spot in the record book for steals in a single season, with 110 steals in the 2001-02 season. SPRIGGS SET TO BREAK SINGLE-SEASON STEALS MARK With just one steal tonight against Colgate, senior guard Chanel Spriggs will break her own record for steals in a season, with 111. Spriggs set the previous mark of 110 in her sophomore season, and followed that up with 107 steals in her junior year, the second-most at AU. HUNT APPROACHING 1,000 With 10 points against Holy Cross on Feb. 20, junior forward Chanel Hunt surpassed 900 career points at American. The 6-0 North Carolinian now has 977 career points (11.5 ppg). She needs just 23 points to break the 1,000-point barrier. Earlier this season, Hunt tallied 24 points and hit a buzzer-beating shot in a 58-57 win on Cotterell Court. DEEE-FENSE... DEEE-FENSE... DEEE-FENSE... A hallmark of the AU squads under coach Shann Hart s tenure has been defense, and plenty of it. The 2003-04 Eagles are no different. This year s version of the team ranks seventh in NCAA Division I in steals per game (12.6/game) and is holding its opponents to just 59.6 points per game. If the Eagles can maintain that average, they would go down as arguably the best defensive squad in school history. The 2002-03 Eagles set a school record for least points per game allowed, at 64.6, and the 2003-04 AU squad will likely surpass that. Scouting Report Colgate: The Raiders have three big guns -- Emily Braseth, Malissa Burke and Milaina Lagzdins. Braseth leads CU with 17.0 ppg and almost never leaves the floor, averaging more than 35 min. per game. Burke is the Raiders outside threat, averaging 14.4 ppg and hitting 36 percent of her three-point attempts. Lagzdins averages just 7.4 ppg, but is the team s leading rebounder with 7.2 boards per contest and has had six double-doubles this season. Chigozie Ozor runs the point for Colgate, and has dished 84 assists with 95 turnovers. She has also nabbed 82 steals on the season. CU is currently on a five-game win streak, which gives the Raiders their first-ever 20-win season. Colgate has advanced to the Patriot League title game just once, in 1996, but lost that game. CU has never made it to an NCAA Tournament. Here is a list of those players and their superlatives: Player Record Notes Chanel Hunt Points Has 977 points, with a chance to become just the 11th Eagle to surpass the 1,000-point barrier this season. Rebounds Has 572 career rebounds, good for 10th place alltime at AU. If Hunt repeats her 212 rebound performance from last season, she will finish her junior season ranked seventh in career rebounds with 582, and would have a chance of breaking the school record of 881 career rebounds, set by Mary Klima from 1994 to 1998. Steals Has 216 career steals, good for eighth all-time at AU in career steals, and just 29 from second. Kaitlin Schuyler Three-pointers Made 3-pt. Shooting Pct. Assists Currently ranks second in career three-pointers, with 140. She has shot of breaking the school record of 147, set by Kari Gaskins from 1995-99. In the 2003-04 season, Schuyler is averaging 1.67 three-pointers per game. Currently ranks 10th, hitting.284 of her attempts. Her 322 career assists puts her fourth on AU s alltime list, 19 away from third place. Chanel Spriggs Steals Surpassed the previous record of 245 steals earlier this season vs. UMBC. Currently has 327 career steals. She is just the sixth player in Patriot League history to surpass 300 steals. Shooting Pct. Currently shooting.444, which would place her 10th on the school list. Assists Currently has 230 career assists, eighth all-time at AU. Needs just one assists to move up to seventh. TWO TEAM RECORDS WITHIN REACH American is set to break two team single-season records today. The Eagles are six steals away from break the single-season team record of 359 and five forced turnovers away the record of 693. PATRIOT LEAGUE PRESEASON PREDICTIONS The PL s coaches and SIDs must be psychic. American was selected by the Patriot League s coaches and sports information directors to finish second in the league, which they did -- just one game behind Colgate. However, 10-time Patriot League regular season champion Holy Cross was selected to win the league this year, and Colgate was picked to finish fourth in the Patriot League. HISTORY OF THE NO. 2 SEED The No. 2 seed has a 22-11 record in the 13-year history of the Patriot League Tournament. Two seeds have made it to the championship game seven times, but have won just once (Bucknell in 2002). The two seed has exited in the first round twice (Bucknell in 1999 and 2001). American was the No. 2 seed in the 2003 tournament, and made it to the secound round before losing to No. 6 seed Army, 78-70. American University Women s Basketball Game Notes ~ Page 4
