Now on its first three-game winning streak of the season, Akron begins the second leg of the road trip tonight against Trenton. Last week at Canal Park, the Thunder took two of three games from the RubberDucks. The RubberDucks pitchers lead the EL with a collective 2.69 ERA. They have also issued the third-fewest walks (34) among the 12 clubs in the circuit. RHP Gabriel Arias earned his second win of the season by going six innings on Saturday, and holding the Baysox to just one run. Arias did not walk anyone, and struck out three. His ERA of 1.80 ranks 9 th in EL. RHP Duke von Schamann worked the final three innings Saturday to earn his first professional save. In three appearances since joining the team, von Schamann has worked 11 innings, giving up just two runs. He has 11 strikeouts and only one walk. 3B Giovanny Urshela clubbed his team-high third homer of the season on Saturday, a solo shot in the second inning to give the RubberDucks a 1-0 lead. Urshela also leads the team in RBI with 12. C Alex Lavisky also belted a home run Saturday, a line-drive shot to left in the sixth to break a 1-1, tie. It was Lavisky s second of the season. Both have come against the Baysox. 1B Jerrud Sabourin was 1-3 on Saturday, and has just one hit in his last 11 at-bats. Sabourin had a key sacrifice fly and RBI in Friday s 7-6 win. In the last eight games, the RubberDucks bullpen has worked a combined 31 2/3 innings and given up just four runs, two earned. That s an ERA of 0.57 over that span. In roster activity, 1B Jake Lowery, who was hit in the face by a pitch from LHP Jake Pettit during the fourth inning Friday night, has been placed on the disabled list, retroactive to 4/19. Lowery suffered a fractured right orbital bone and is expected to be lost from the team for 6-8 weeks. INF Ronny Rodriguez has been reinstated from the temporary inactive list, and is available for tonight s game. Rodriguez is hitting.152, with one RBI in nine games so far this season. This is the 26 th season of Double-A baseball in Northeast Ohio, and the 18 th in downtown Akron. The franchise began as the Canton-Akron Indians in 1989, and then moved to Canal Park in Akron as the Aeros in 1997. On October 29, 2013, the team officially changed its name from the Aeros to the RubberDucks. The name is derived from the city s long history as the Rubber Capital of the World. Akron has made the Eastern League playoffs 14 times overall, and eight of the last 12 years. The team has captured four Eastern League titles 2003, 2005, 2009, and 2012. RubberDucks Starting Pitcher #44 Cody Anderson RHP, 6-4, 220, Age 23 (9-14-90), Resides: Quincy, CA Last time out: 4/16/14 vs. TRE, 3.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 HR, 2 BB, 2 K (ND in 4-3 win) Fourth-year pro. Owns a lifetime record of 14-12 in the minor leagues. Making his fourth start of the season. The RubberDucks are 2-1 in his starts. Ranked as #5 prospect in Indians organization by Baseball America, and #4 by MLB.com. Uses, fastball, slider, curve and change-up. 14 th round selection in 2011 draft out of Feather River (CA) Community College. Lasted only three innings in no-decision vs. TRE, 4/16. Tossed 73 pitches, but allowed only one run on four hits. Anderson left after three innings with a 2-1 lead. It was 33-degrees at game time. Started home opener at Canal Park, 4/10, before sellout crowd of 8,046, but suffered 6-3 loss vs. BOW. Worked six innings, giving up four runs on five hits. Allowed two homers to Bowie s Buck Britton, including a solo shot on the first pitch of the game. Started season-opener at BIN, 4/3, and turned in an impressive 6-inning performance in 7-1 victory. He scattered four hits and allowed one run. He issued one walk and struck out three. Winner of the 2014 Bob Feller Award, given annually to the Indians Minor League Pitcher of the Year. Split the 2013 season between Class-A Carolina and Double-A Akron. Went 9-4, 2.34 ERA, in 23 starts for the Mudcats, and was named Carolina League Pitcher of the Year. Joined Akron 8/14/13 for his debut at the AA level. Made three starts for Akron in 2013, without a decision and a 5.68 ERA. Akron was 1-2 in his three starts. Named Indians Minor League Player of the Week two times, 8/13/13, and 5/21/13. In 2013, his combined ERA of 2.65 led the entire Indians minor league system, and his 122 total strikeouts ranked fourth among Cleveland s minor league pitchers. In 123.1 innings at Carolina, Anderson walked only 31 hitters, while fanning 112. Was named to mid-season Carolina League All-Star Team. Fanned a season-high nine batters, 5/14/13, at Salem. At the time of his promotion to Akron, Anderson was leading the Carolina League in ERA (2.34), and ranked fourth in strikeouts (112), and second in WHIP (1.10). Anderson held Carolina League hitters to a.236 batting average. After the Carolina League all-star break, Anderson was 3-1, 1.88, in nine starts before his promotion to Akron. Did not allow a HR in his last six starts with the Mudcats. Made his Double-A debut, 8/15, at RIC, and worked five solid innings, allowing two runs on four hits. He walked three and struck out five, and left with a 4-2 lead. After a bullpen meltdown, the Aeros lost 9-6, and Anderson settled for a no-decision. RubberDucks Rewind Last Time Out Saturday, April 19, 2014 RubberDucks Slug Way to Series Sweep (Bowie, MD) Giovanny Urshela and Alex Lavisky hit solo home runs on Saturday afternoon, leading the Akron RubberDucks to a 3-1 victory and a three-game series sweep over the Bowie Baysox. The RubberDucks (9-7) have won three in a row for the first time this season, and are two games over the.500-mark for the first time as well. The three wins over the Baysox (8-8) were all closely contested, with two one-run games and Saturday s two-run margin. Righthander Gabriel Arias (2-1) worked six innings to pick up his second win of the season. He scattered five hits, and allowed just one run on a solo homer by Christian Walker. Arias did not walk a batter, and fanned three. Relief help came from righty Duke von Schamann, who tossed the final three innings for his first save. Von Schamann also did not walk anyone and recorded four strikeouts. The Akron bullpen worked eight innings of shutout baseball in the series. Urshela led off the Akron second inning with a long homer to left, his third of the season. It came off Bowie starter Matt Bischoff. Urshela now leads the team with 12 RBI. After Walker tied it, 1-1, with his homer in the fourth, the RubberDucks rallied to take the lead for good in the sixth against leftahnder Jason Gurka (0-1). Lavisky led off the inning with his second homer of the year to give the Ducks a 2-1, lead. After Tyler Naquin was hit by a pitch and Francisco Lindor was walked, Joe Wendle lined a single to left to score Naquin and make it 3-1. RubberDuckS 2014 Field Staff #17 David Wallace, Manager A former catcher in the Indians minor league system, Wallace was named Akron s 15 th manager on December 20, 2013. The 2014 season is Wallace s fourth as a minor league manager. A former star football and baseball player at Vanderbilt University, Wallace enjoyed a seven-year minor league career, mostly with the Indians organization. He spent parts of three seasons as a player in Akron, appearing in 122 games with 17 homers and 54 RBI. After concluding his playing career, he spent two seasons as a staff assistant with the major league club before embarking on his managerial career with Mahoning Valley in 2011. #45 Jeff Harris, Pitching Coach Now in his sixth season in the Indians organization, Harris assumes the role of pitching coach for the RubberDucks in 2014. Harris joined the Indians organization in 2009, following a 14-year professional career that included 14 big league games with the Seattle Mariners. #24 Rouglas Odor, Hitting Coach No stranger to Canal Park, Odor returns to Akron as the team s hitting coach, a role he also held in 2012, when the Aeros won the Eastern League championship. The 2014 season will be Odor s 27 th as a player, coach and manager in the Indians organization. He is the only man to wear the uniforms of all three incarnations of Akron baseball Canton-Akron Indians, Akron Aeros and Akron RubberDucks. Jeremy Heller, Trainer The 2014 season mark s Heller s first in Akron, and his 10 th overall as a trainer in the Indians organization. He spent the last two seasons with the Carolina Mudcats. He was named Athletic Trainer of the Year in the Carolina League in 2012. Jake Sankal, Strength and Conditioning Coach A native of nearby Mentor, Ohio, and a graduate of the College of Wooster, Sankal returns for his second season on the Akron staff, and his fifth overall in the Indians organization. We Are the RubberDucks On October 29, 2013, team-owner Ken Babby stood before a capacity audience at the Akron Civic Theater and announced that the team would be known henceforth as the Akron RubberDucks. In addition to being symbolic of the fun, family-friendly brand of entertainment offered by minor league baseball, the name also honors Akron s long history as the Rubber Capital of the World. Brandiose Marketing of San Diego, California designed the team logo, colors, and various marks and insignias. Please note that for print coverage, RubberDucks is spelled as one word with a capital D. In broadcast coverage, referring to the team as the Ducks is an acceptable variation of the team s nickname.
