Germany The Bavarian Hops Tour 2019 Self-Guided Cycling Tour 8 days / 7 nights Hopfen und Malz - Gott-erhalt's - a toast, which literally translated means: Hops and malt for beer - may God preserve them here! Hallertau is the biggest hops - growing region in the world and a very appealing cycling region. Danube, Isar and Abens form an easy circular tour with the UNESCO World Heritage town of Regensburg as your start your tour. The traditional monastery breweries of Weihenstephan and Weltenburg are very suitable stops for a little beer tasting.
Itinerary Day to Day Day 1: Individual arrival to Regensburg Your tour begins in Regensburg, the most northern town on the Danube. This town is considered Germany's best preserved city and has been declared a UNESCO Heritage Site. Take some time to explore the lovely parks and gardens as well as the historic old town. Day 2: Regensburg Straubing 50 km The Danube curves its way gracefully through the wide expanse of the countryside and you cycle alongside. Take a short break at Walhalla, which King Ludwig I had built, before setting off for today's destination at Straubing, the capital of the "Gäuboden" region. Every year in summer the popular Gäubodenfest is celebrated here. Day 3: Straubing Deggendorf - Plattling 50 km Soon after setting off, you reach Bogen, which is famous for the finding of a statue of the pregnant Madonna. Continuing on you go through Pfelling and Mariaposching to finally arrive at the gate to the Bavarian Forest: Deggendorf, Gothic and Baroque characterise the old town. From here it's only a few kilometres to Plattling. Day 4: Plattling Landau - Landshut 70 km Right along the banks of the Isar you cycle to Dingolfing, whose townscape is characterised by the Late Gothic Church of St. Johannes. Through expansive fields of hops, you cycle on to Landshut, today's destination. The ducal residential town was considered more important than Munich for many hundreds of years and shines even today with its magnificent buildings in the wonderful Gothic town centre. Day 5: Landshut Freising 40 km The Isar accompanies you to Moosburg, where, from afar, the towers of the Münster and the Johannes Churches make you think you could be arriving in a cathedral city rather than simply a busy little town. In Freising, too, a mighty cathedral awaits - and is easily recognised as such. No wonder, as 1000 years ago, the town was considered the spiritual centre of Bavaria as the residence of the Prince Bishopric.
Day 6: Freising Abensberg/Bad Gögging 65/70 km Today, you leave the Isar and cycle through the fields of hops of the Hallertau region to the north, over to Abens, a small secondary river to the Danube. You pass Mainburg monastery, which despite its name is on the Abens River and not the Main. The lovely old town of Abensberg is very inviting. Take a stroll and a wander through its pretty streets in the evening. Day 7: Abensberg/Bad Gögging Regensburg 65/60 km + boat trip Along the Danube to Weltenburg Monastery, where Mother Nature has something special in store: the Danube Gap, where the Danube curves its way through the massive Jura rock. Fortify yourself in the monastery beer garden before taking the boat through the Danube Gap to Kelheim whereupon you pedal the last few kilometres on your bike. Day 8: Individual journey home or extension After breakfast, you start your individual return journey home or extend your stay.
