Big 12 Coaches Vote Paris, Hand There must be something in the water at the Lloyd Noble Center. After becoming the first school to sweep the Big 12 s preseason vote for No. 1 team in men s and women s basketball, Oklahoma swept the league s picks for preseason player of the year and freshman of the year. The Big 12 Conference named Courtney Paris its Preseason Player of the Year for a third consecutive season and Whitney Hand and Texas A&M s Tyra White its Co-Preseason Freshmen of the Year. Oklahoma No. 1 in Big 12 Poll In a vote of the league s coaches released Wednesday, the University of Oklahoma women s basketball team was the preseason favorite to win the 2009 Big 12 regular season championship. Sherri Coale s Sooners earned seven of the 12 first-place votes (coaches are not allowed to vote for their own teams) and 124 points to take No. 1. Texas (95) received one first-place vote for second in a close vote over Iowa State (93), which received two first-place votes. Baylor (89), with one first-place vote, Texas A&M (85), Oklahoma State (79 and one first-place vote), defending Big 12 champion Kansas State (71), Nebraska (56), Kansas (41), Texas Tech (36), Colorado (18) and Missouri (15), respectively, completed the poll. Wecker Joins Oklahoma Staff 2005 Big 12 Player of the Year Kendra Wecker would join the team as a graduate assistant. Wecker was a three-time All-Big 12 First Team member at Kansas State and was picked fourth overall by the San Antonio Silver Stars in the 2005 WNBA Draft. A first-team All-American in 2005, Wecker was a three-time Naismith Player of the Year finalist and two-time Wade Trophy and Wooden Award finalist. Wecker still holds Kansas State career records for scoring (2,333 points), rebounds (1,087), doubledoubles (52), field goals made (935), field goals attempted (1,913) and minutes played (4,141). Paris Leads Wade Trophy, Wooden Award Candidates Oklahoma senior Courtney Paris leads the 25-member list of State Farm Wade Trophy preseason candidates, announced by the Women s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), and the 30-member watch list for the Wooden Award and Wooden Preseason All-America Team, announced by chairman Richard Duke Llewellyn. Oklahoma s No. 2 ranking in the first week of the AP Poll was its 60th straight week (including preseason polls) in the Top 25, breaking its record of 59 straight set from week 11 of the 2000 season to week 11 of the 2003 season. Seniors Ashley and Courtney Paris and Carolyn Winchester have kept the Sooners in the Top 25 for the duration of their careers. Postgame Leftovers Oklahoma Sets Comeback Record Oklahoma s comeback win against Cal set the largest deficit overcome in regulation to win a game. The Sooners trailed the Bears by 26 points with 19:01 remaining in the second half and won 86-75. New Turnover low Oklahoma s eight turnovers against UConn and 10 versus Creighton set a record low in back-to-back games for Sherri Coale-coached teams. Previously, no Sooner team coached by Coale had consecutive games with fewer than 20 combined turnovers. Triple Double-Double Double-doubles by Ashley and Courtney Paris and Amanda Thompson against North Carolina on Nov. 23, 2008, marked the first time three Sooners recorded double-doubles in the same game. Offensive output Lost in the struggle from a 106-78 defeat to No. 1 UConn was the efficiency of OU s offense. The Sooners ripped off 85 field goal attempts while turning the ball over just eight times, matching a three-year season low. OU also connected on 56 percent of its 3-point attempts, its best mark since the fourth game of the 2007-08 season. Courtney Paris sets OU Scoring Record The second-ranked Sooners never trailed at home against Arizona State, winning the Preseason WNIT semifinal, 70-57. Courtney Paris scored 19 points and 20 rebounds for her 100th career double-double and passed Phylesha Whaley as OU s career scoring leader. More on Paris Scoring Efficiency Phylesha Whaley scored 2,187 points in 116 career games and an OU record 4,025 minutes played. Courtney Paris passed Whaley s mark with 2,189 points in 103 games. Oklahoma Women s Basketball Game Notes Game Notes 5 The Greatest Comeback in NCAA History Led by Nyeshia Stevenson s 21 second-half points, Oklahoma engineered the greatest comeback win in regulation in NCAA history against then-no. 9 California in the final game of the Basketball by the Bay Classic in San Jose, Calif., on Dec. 13. Oklahoma trailed 52-26 at the half and began a 10-0 run in the second half with 19:00 remaining. The Sooners also reeled a 28-0 run from 9:00 to 0:42 in which OU made 6-of-12 field goals and Cal missed 11 consecutive. Eleven of Stevenson s 21 points came during this run, including the tying, go-ahead and, eventually, winning field goals. OU outscored Cal in points off turnovers, 20-0, in the final period. In 2007-08, Paris dominated with averages of 19 points, 15 rebounds and 3.5 blocks. She led the conference in rebounding and was second in scoring. Nationally, Paris was the only player to rank in the top 50 in more than three of the eight major statistical categories -- she ranked in the top 26 of four. BIG 12 FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR Danielle Robinson was the league s choice for freshman the year. Her blinding speed and quickness left a serious impression on opposing coaches. As such, she was the only freshman named to the Big 12 s All-Defensive Team. ASHLEY PARIS NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT Ashley Paris, a journalism major, was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 6 First Team. To qualify, canididates must have a 3.20 cumulative GPA or better and at least one year of academic residency. Coale Most Fun to Watch OU head coach Sherri Coale was voted by members of the Women s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) as the Most Fun to Watch head coach in the nation. No. 3 Nationally in Home Attendance Oklahoma was a national leader in home attendance once again in 2008. After 13 home games, OU s per game attendance average was 10,254, No. 3 in the nation for average home game attendance. The top two teams -- Tennessee and Connecticut -- have larger home seating capacities than OU s arena. Milestones 1,000th Game in Sooner History Oklahoma started its women s basketball program for the 1974-75 season and played its 1,000th game in the 2008-09 season opener. OU s all-time record is 586-423 (.581). Coale s 250th Victory Sherri Coale earned her 250th victory in her 12th year as the head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners. The Sooners defeated Texas A&M, 68-56, on Tuesday, Feb. 12, for the milestone win. Coale s is OU s and the Big 12 s all-time leader in coaching victories and winning percentage. Paris Passes 2,000 With her sixth point against Oklahoma State, Sunday, Feb. 23, Courtney Paris reached 2,000 career points quicker than any player in Big 12 or Oklahoma history. Paris was playing her 94th game. Paris finished the game with 18 points to boost her career total to 2,012. Paris 32nd Big 12 Record If passing 2,000 career points faster than any other player in Big 12 history wasn t enough, Courtney Paris literally grabbed her second Big 12 record in the game against Oklahoma State (Feb. 23). Paris grabbed a career high 11 offensive boards to overtake Baylor s Sophia Young (489, 2003-06) as the Big 12 career offensive rebounds leader. Third Consecutive 20-Win Season Oklahoma captured its third consecutive 20-win season and 13th in the program s history with is victory against Oklahoma State on Feb. 23. ASHLEY AND COURTNEY HIT THE CENTURY MARK Both Ashley and Courtney Paris will played their 100th collegiate game when the Sooners met Notre Dame in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Courtney has started all but one, after requesting to sit on senior night as a freshman, and has scored in double figures in all of them. Notable Numbers The Circus Comes to Town When Connecticut visited Norman, Okla., to play the Sooners during the 1999-2000 season, a then-record crowd of 10,713 attended the game at the Lloyd Noble Center. OU head coach Sherri Coale likened the experience to the circus coming to town. It seems that Oklahoma now has its own three rings. A visit by the Sooners in 2007-08 boosted its opponent s attendance by 42 percent over its season average. Earning Sole Possession Oklahoma s Sherri Coale leads Iowa State s Bill Fennelly for most regular-season Big 12 Conference coaching victories with 121. Coale, Fennelly and former Texas head coach Jody Conradt had equal 110-66 records entering OU s Big 12 opener against Iowa State, which the Sooners won 67-64. Oklahoma went 11-5 in the Big 12 this season while Iowa State was 7-9.
