DRF.COM/BREEDING DAILY RACING FORM Saturday, February 25, 2017 PAGE 3 CONSIGNORS EXPRESS OPTIMISM FOR MIDDLE MARKET By Joe Nevills One could argue that the 2-year-olds in training portion of the North American auction calendar is the most dependent on outside market forces in determining its own outcome. Sellers often must base their reserves on the prices they paid for their stock in the yearling market the previous year, while buyers shop based on their foreseeable futures on the racetrack. In 2016, that produced a rather fragile ecosystem in the juvenile market, with lower returns and higher buyback rates at nearly all of the major sales. That momentum was compounded during the subsequent yearling and mixed-sale seasons, where relatively healthy upper and middle markets were dragged down by a hurting lower market. On paper, those metrics should not add up to a rosy forecast for the upcoming juvenile auctions, and perhaps that will be the case, but the juvenile market is built on the ability to rebuild, restock, and adapt to changing landscapes. That preparation for the coming season has come in different forms. Consignor Cary Frommer watched the low-end market struggles during last year s juvenile auctions with a keen eye. She focused her yearling-buying strategy on horses that would stay out of the bottom tiers, and be able to sell at the Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream and Ocala Breeders Sales Co. March juvenile sales. We stepped up and spent a lot more money than we normally do and picked out some really lovely individuals, and they re all looking promising, Frommer said. We ve concentrated on trying to buy for these first two sales just the right ones. Frommer said she came out of the Fasig- Tipton Kentucky July yearling sale with $1 million worth of horses. Usually, I come out of there with three horses and I ve spent $200,000, she said. We spent a couple hundred thousand on a few horses, and the same up in Saratoga. We spent a lot of money on our horses. We need to have a good year, because we put our necks on the line a little bit here. The desire to stay out of the lower markets, both in buying yearlings and offering them as juveniles, was one shared by many pinhook buyers last year, which increased the competition and prices on some desired horses. While this likely helped secure higher-quality offerings for the coming 2-year-old market, a hardfought yearling purchase also means the price clearance must be higher as a 2-yearold to make a profit. It was probably one of the toughest years Barbara D. Livingston The Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale kicks off the 2-year-old sale season Wednesday. ever that we ve experienced buying, said Ciaran Dunne of Wavertree Stables. It s the same deal, everyone wants the same thing. You find one you think you re going to sneak up on, and you walk up there and everyone in the world is there. Probably one of the hardest things last year was the racing guys. The end-users were landing on the horses they normally let us have. We found it very difficult. Dunne said he expects a similar juvenile market landscape to what was seen in 2016, but having a year to prepare and adjust to a tide that shifted in the middle of last year s season should help create steadier trade. The buyers have gotten very sophisticated, and as we ve seen in the yearling and mixed sales, there s great demand at the top end, and the middle is a little sticky, and the bottom is nonexistent, he said. I don t think you ll see any dropoff from that, and it might even improve a little. That source of improvement might come from the middle market. J. Michael Get real-time coverage of the Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale, including live video streaming, starting at 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday. live.drf.com/breeding O Farrell Jr. of Ocala Stud said the market s easing off from what was a record average and median pace for many 2-yearold auctions could make horses more accessible to a wider range of end-users. Buyers don t like paying more for something than what they re comfortable with, and I think the way the averages have come down at a lot of the sales for the middle market makes it more affordable for a wider group of people to play the Continued on page 4

PAGE 4 Saturday, February 25, 2017 DAILY RACING FORM DRF.COM/BREEDING Continued from page 3 game, he said. I think we have a chance of it bouncing back a bit, not that it s going to take off, but I do think the market will broaden out a little bit this year. It s no different from people going to the stores when somebody puts something on sale, you ll have more buyers. I think the middle market s been on sale the last couple of years, and I think we might start attracting additional buyers, and those that had been playing, maybe they ll be playing a little harder. However, O Farrell did acknowledge that having a horse that fell below the median was still rough waters to navigate, and that might not change anytime soon. The bottom end is tough, he said. It s always been tough, but over the last few years, we ve had some racetracks that have closed and other racetracks that have cut racing days or purses. We ve seen some running fewer races per day, so there s less opportunity for the bottom end. The Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale of select 2-year-olds in training is not in line to have that concern. Of the seven juvenile sales hosted by a major North American auction house in 2016, only the boutique Gulfstream sale posted across-the-board gains in gross, average, and median. The auction will take place Wednesday in the paddock of the Hallandale Beach, Fla., racetrack, beginning at 4 p.m. Eastern. The pre-sale under-tack show will be held at 10 a.m. Monday. This year s catalog features 160 offerings, marking a 5 percent increase from last year s 152-horse catalog. We re very enthusiastic about the sale, Faisg-Tipton president Boyd Browning said. I think we ve got a really nice group of horses coming to the sale, a lot of diversity, sire power, and pedigree. The consignors have given us, from top to bottom, really quality horses that we saw at the farms. It will be the third year that Fasig- Tipton s select juvenile auction will be held at Gulfstream Park, having previously been hosted at other Florida destinations including the Palm Meadows Training Center, Calder Race Course, and Ocalaarea Adena Springs South. With two years of partnerships, breeze shows, and well-received auctions at Gulfstream, conducting business there has become routine for the sale s participants heading into the 2017 renewal, which makes for a smoother event. By the third year, you know what you need to know what you need in advance for coming to the track, how the track plays, Frommer said. I feel comfortable with it being at Gulfstream. I think it s a good place to sell a horse. The two entities cooperated to build additional stabling for the sale horses last year, and a permanent cover was added to the new structure for this year s renewal. Fasig-Tipton has always been very user-friendly for 2-year-old consignors, and they ve been doing it so long, Dunne said. The guys that are in there know how put on a 2-year-old sale. Maybe with a new company, the transition would have been a little harder, but with those guys at the helm, it s been great. The Gulfstream sale will once again be the only major juvenile auction on the calendar to be held at a racetrack during an active meet. Browning said the ability to directly compare a juvenile s breezeshow performance to that of an afternoon runner was an appealing draw for buyers, many of which might be based near Gulfstream for the races anyway. They ve gotten used to, and really enjoy, buying horses that are working and training on a daily basis over a racetrack where some of the best racing in the United States occurs, so I think the buyers have gotten a really high level of confidence, he said. They understand [breeze] times there, they understand how the good horses generally move on dirt. I think the buyers have gotten really comfortable with the setup, and the sale has found a home. The 2016 renewal of the Gulfstream sale sold 66 horses for revenues of $21,590,000, up 7 percent in gross from the 2015 renewal when 89 horses brought $20,095,500. The average sale price rose 45 percent to $327,121, the median increased 92 percent to $250,000, and the buyback rate remained fairly steady at 31 percent. DRF.COM/BREEDING DAILY RACING FORM Saturday, February 25, 2017 PAGE 7 SHANGHAI HEADS DEEP GROUP TESTING MARKET By Nicole Russo Shanghai Bobby put together a stellar juvenile campaign in 2012, going unbeaten at distances from 4 1/2 furlongs to 1 1/16 miles and winning three graded stakes capped by the Breeders Cup Juvenile to earn a divisional Eclipse Award. Shanghai Bobby s accomplishments on the track is one reason anticipation is high for his first crop of juveniles this season. Already commercially popular as weanlings and yearlings, they ll have another test of the market when the juvenile sales season begins in earnest in March. Shanghai Bobby, who stands at Coolmore s Ashford Stud in Versailles, Ky., is among the most well-regarded stallions in a freshman class that also includes three American classic winners and several other Breeders Cup winners. The group is not dominated by a single standout, Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning said. It s a solid, representative group with some very interesting and intriguing stallion prospects, Browning said. Shanghai Bobby is a son of the late Harlan s Holiday, who has quietly become a solid sire of sires, with sons including Into Mischief, last year s leading juvenile sire. All six of Shanghai Bobby s yearlings through the ring at last summer s select Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale fetched six-figure prices, led by a $380,000 filly selected by prominent bloodstock agents Alex Solis and Jason Litt. Shanghai Bobby then recorded an average price of $113,105 from 38 yearlings sold at the bellwether Keeneland September yearling sale, including a $575,000 colt sold to Mayberry Farm and a $400,000 colt sold to Breeze Easy LLC. The sire we are huge fans of, Hunter Valley Farm s Fergus Galvin said after going to $280,000 for a Shanghai Bobby filly during the Keeneland November mixed sale. We think he is going to be one of the top freshman sires for this year. She s just the real deal. Quality is shining through. Anything that especially looks like her is going to be at the top end of the market, and you have to be prepared to pay for it. Shanghai Bobby has the numbers to be a factor in the juvenile sales market. He covered a book of 160 mares in his first season, according to The Jockey Club s Report of Mares Bred. Orb recorded the top price for a first-year sire at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga, as Juddmonte paid $450,000 for one of his fillies. He was then among the leading first-year sires by average at Keeneland September, with 43 yearlings sold for an average of $141,686. He will look to continue his commercial momentum, with four juveniles cataloged at Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream and a solid 15 at OBS March. After finishing sixth to Orb in the Kentucky Derby, Oxbow bounced back with a front-running score in the Preakness, then was second in the Belmont. The Awesome Again horse, who stood his first season at Taylor Made before moving to owner Brad Kelley s Calumet Farm, is from a stallion-making family. Awesome Again s sons at stud include Ghostzapper. On the female side, Oxbow is out of a full sister to champion and prominent sire Tiznow. Two other stallions from this immediate family also have their first runners this year WinStar Farm s Paynter, a son of Awesome Again out of another full sister to Tiznow, and Spendthrift Farm s Awesome Patriot, a full brother to Oxbow. Champion Animal Kingdom, by the late Leroidesanimaux, was one of the most versatile runners of recent years. He won the Derby on dirt, the Dubai World Cup on synthetic, and was multiple Grade 1-placed on turf, including a runner-up effort to two-time Horse of the Year Wise Dan in the Breeders Cup Mile. With those accomplishments lending to his international appeal, he entered stud at Arrowfield Stud in Australia for the 2013 Southern Hemisphere season before reverse shuttling to Darley s Jonabell Farm in Kentucky. His first Australian foals are 2-year-olds on Southern Hemisphere time, with several runners from his initial starters having placed as of press time. DRF.COM/BREEDING DAILY RACING FORM Saturday, February 25, 2017 PAGE 13 HIGH COTTON RISES AMONG ACTIVE FLORIDA SIRES High Cotton started strong six years ago as Florida s leading freshman sire of 2011, and he followed through on the potential in 2016 as the state s top returning sire by overall progeny earnings. The 14-year-old son of Dixie Union had 92 winners last year also the most in the state for a returning sire with earnings of $3,485,516. His five stakes winners and six stakes wins also led or tied all Florida stallions. High Cotton stands at Ocala Stud in Ocala for an advertised fee of $4,000. He has seven crops of racing age. We re happy to have him, said J. Michael O Farrell Jr. of Ocala Stud. He s done extremely well for us. It s about getting runners, and he gets runners. That s the name of the game. Leading the way among High Cotton s runners was R Angel Katelyn, a filly out of the Southern Halo mare Send for an Angel, whose four wins in six starts during her 2-year-old campaign included the Sandpiper Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs and the Juvenile Filly Sprint Stakes at Gulfstream Park West. High Cotton was represented in the Florida Sire Stakes series by Meadow Star Stakes winner She s Incredible, Unbridled Stakes winner Dream of Me, and four others who were stakes-placed during the series. His runners included Dream of Me and Call to Honor, who finished first and third in the Unbridled Stakes for Floridasired 3-year-old males. Outside of Florida, High Cotton was led by Karen s Silk, winner of the Marshua Stakes at Laurel Park. High Cotton has steadily climbed to the top of Florida s sire ranks after besting his freshman contemporaries with a crop that included Grade 1 winner Currency Swap. High Cotton finished in the state s top 10 by overall progeny earnings for the first time in 2015. He s been a solid stallion for us over the years, O Farrell said. He started off with a bang. He had a small book in his third year, which a lot of stallions do when they go to stud, but when the horses ran in his first few crops and showed what he could do, his books started to enlarge again. He s gotten a lot of solid runners and a lot of happy owners. At the end of the day, it s about happy people, and he gives you a lot of happy people. While High Cotton led Florida s active returning sires by progeny earnings, he finished behind the late perennial powerhouse Wildcat Heir among all Florida stallions. In his third consecutive season atop the overall leader board, Wildcat Heir had 148 Barbara D. Livingston Gone Astray was the leading juvenile sire in Florida, with $1,323,548 in earnings. winners, the most of any Florida stallion living or dead, and earnings of $6,177,581. His top runners included Grade 2 winner Wild Dude, Grade 2-placed Chief Lion, and Grade 3-placed My Dear Venezuela and Sword Fighter. Wildcat Heir died in early 2015 at age 15. He had stood at Journeyman Stud in Ocala. Joe Nevills Leading juvenile sire: Gone Astray With the select Fasig-Tipton 2-year-old sale at Gulfstream Park and the Ocala Breeders Sales Co. hosting several prominent sales, Florida is at the epicenter of the nation s 2-year-old sales action. As those youngsters graduate from the sales ring to the racetrack, they have ample opportunities on the Sunshine State s busy racing calendar with the lucrative Florida Sire Series and other events providing added incentive for in-state stallions. Thus, it s no small thing to be a leading juvenile sire in Florida. Leading that important category in 2016 was Northwest Stud s Gone Astray whose bankroll of $1,323,548 earned by his 2-year-olds edged out the state s leading active general sire, Ocala Stud s High Cotton, with $1,222,384. Gone Astray, a son of Dixie Union who stands for $5,000, finished sixth on the general sire list. Millionaire Gone Astray won three graded stakes during his own racing career, taking the Pennsylvania Derby and Ohio Derby, both Grade 2 events, and following up with the Grade 3 Salvator Mile the next year. He entered stud in 2012 and was third on the 2015 freshman sire list. Gone Astray s second crop of juveniles in 2016 was led by four-time stakes winner Three Rules, who followed a score in the Birdonthewire Stakes by sweeping the Florida Sire Dr. Fager, Affirmed, and In Reality divisions. For the victory in the Dr. Fager, he earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 92 the 12th best by a 2-year-old male nationally in 2016. Three Rules suffered his first loss when sixth in the Breeders Cup Juvenile. He finished second in the Grade 2 Swale Continued on page 14

Gone Astray s juveniles last year also included Pretty Boy Flash, who finished third in the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga, and Alice B Winkle, third in the Furlough Stakes at Aqueduct. Gone Astray, who raced as a homebred for the vaunted Phipps Stable, is out of a daughter of champion Inside Information, who also produced champion Smuggler. It is the family of Grade 1 winner Educated Risk. Nicole Russo Leading turf sire: In Summation In Summation s showcase runners almost uniformly did their best work on the main track, but a steady stream of performers on the grass helped propel the stallion to the top of Florida s list of active returning sires by turf earnings in 2016. The 14-year-old son of Put It Back had 11 turf winners last year and combined progeny earnings on the grass of $579,752. He stands at Ocala Stud in Ocala for $2,500. Heading up In Summation s turf runners were stakes-placed Summation Time and Awsum Roar. He s got the feet of a turf horse himself and gets a lot of his individuals with turf feet, so a lot of them do run well on the turf, which is great, Ocala Stud s J. Michael O Farrell Jr. said. There s way more turf-sprint races in the world than there used to be 30 years ago. A pair of horses tied for In Summation s highest Beyer Speed Figure performance on the turf, each registering a 96. Summation Time earned that number finishing second in the Gin Rummy Champ Stakes at Gulfstream Park West and earned Beyers of 95 and 94 earlier in his campaign. Calculator earned a 96 Beyer for a third-place effort in a Del Mar optional-claiming race. In addition to earning In Summation s co-highest Beyer in 2016, Calculator finished second in the Grade 1 Carter Handicap and Grade 2 Churchill Downs Stakes and ran third in the Grade 2 San Carlos Stakes, all on dirt. Wildcat Heir had 32 turf winners, the most by any Florida sire and more than double the next-closest sire. His leading runners on the grass included stakes winners Rainbow Heir and Daring Kathy. Joe Nevills Leading freshman sire: Biondetti Biondetti was a May foal, but nevertheless developed quickly to stand out among his peers. He won three of four starts as a 2-year-old, including the Group 1 Gran Criterium in Italy. As his stud career begins, he seemingly has passed his precocity on to his own foals. Biondetti, standing at Woodford Stud for $4,000, led the Florida freshman sire list by both earnings and winners for 2016, with 10 winners bankrolling $401,462. Overdriven, standing at Ocala Stud, was second in both categories, with nine winners and $335,495. Biondetti s juvenile statistics were good enough to place him fifth among active sires on Florida s overall juvenile sire list. Biondetti s earnings in 2016 were led by a pair of fillies: Bella Vincenza made eight starts, winning once and finishing second three times, and Clever Girl won both her starts, which came at Churchill Downs and Fair Grounds. None of Biondetti s runners made an impact in stakes company as a juvenile, but another of his daughters, Lady Racer, finished second in the OBS Sprint Fillies Division in January in her 3-year-old debut. From the first crop of Bernardini, Biondetti is from an accomplished female family. He is a half-brother to Delta Princess, dam of the late three-time Eclipse Award champion Royal Delta. This family is beginning to produce solid young sires. In addition to Biondetti s success in Florida with his first crop, Royal Delta s Grade 2-placed half-brother Empire Way was California s leading freshman sire by earnings last year. Nicole Russo Beyer standings: Exclusive Quality shines Exclusive Quality, with 95 representatives on the track in 2016, finished 10th on Florida s general sire list based on earnings. However, he factored prominently in Daily Racing Form s Beyer Sire Performance Standings unveiled last month an exclusive metric to examine stallion progeny performance in-depth, often highlighting under-the-radar sires. Beyer Speed Figures were incorporated into Daily Racing Form s past performances in 1992 and are now an industry standard for the comparison of one horse s performance to another. The Beyer Sire Performance Standings provide the breeding industry with an additional metric to compare stallion progeny performance beyond wins and earnings. The standings provide totals and percentages for progeny who surpass specific Beyer benchmarks in North American races. While traditional sire lists based on earnings can be slanted by one or two major runners or casino-inflated purses on some circuits the Beyer Sire Performance Standings look beyond these factors. Beyers are assigned to all runners in a race, allowing DRF s sire lists to include all performances. Among active Florida stallions with 50 or more starters in 2016, Exclusive Quality led the way by the percentage of those individuals who earned a benchmark Beyer Speed Figure of 90 or greater, with 3.1 percent of his runners doing so. The Journeyman Stud resident s top figure was recorded by Dreaming of Neno, who posted a 95 Beyer while winning an optional-claiming event in June at Monmouth Park. Among Florida stallions with 100 or more starters in 2016, In Summation led the state s Beyer Sire Performance Standings by percentage of individuals to record a 90 or greater, with 2.9 percent. In Summation, also the state s leading turf sire by earnings, was the only active Florida stallion to have multiple runners recording a triple-digit Beyer. Following In Summation by percentage of runners to record Beyers of 90 and up came With Distinction (2.6 percent), First Dude (1.8 percent), and High Cotton (0.6 percent). High Cotton is the state s leading active general sire by earnings, offering another illustration of how the Beyer standings can provide a different look at stallion performance. Nicole Russo

PAGE 16 Saturday, February 25, 2017 DAILY RACING FORM DRF.COM/BREEDING PAIR OF CURLIN S SONS TOP NEW FLORIDA STALLIONS By Nicole Russo As rapidly rising young classic sires with major contenders on this year s Kentucky Derby trail, Curlin and Pioneerof the Nile are among the most in-demand stallions in Kentucky this year. Each has a classic-placed son entering stud this year in Florida, giving a big kick to the Sunshine State s program. Ride On Curlin, who finished second in the 2014 Preakness Stakes to champion California Chrome, is entering stud at Pleasant Acres Stallions in Morriston for an advertised fee of $5,000, tied as the most expensive newcomer in the state. Social Inclusion, third in that Preakness, debuts at Woodford Thoroughbreds in Reddick for a fee of $4,000. Ride On Curlin won his second start by 7 3/4 lengths, running 5 1/2 furlongs at Ellis Park in what was then a track-record 1:03. Grade 1-placed as a juvenile and during the following spring s classic prep program at Oaklawn Park, he contested all three legs of the 2014 Triple Crown, with his highlight the Preakness runner-up effort, 1 1/2 lengths behind California Chrome. Eased in the Belmont, he was given the rest of the year off and came back to be multiple stakes placed as an older horse. Ride On Curlin is a stunning individual, said Michelle Hemingway, director of bloodstock at Pleasant Acres. Being a track-record setter in July of his 2-year-old campaign will make him very attractive to Florida breeders. In my mind, Curlin looks to be an up-and-coming sire of sires. Ride On Curlin is out of Grade 2-placed Magical Ride, who in turn is out of Grade 1 winner Victory Ride. Ride On Curlin is one of two sons of Curlin entering stud in Florida and the other also comes from an outstanding female family. Jess s Dream, the only son of 2009 Horse of the Year and Hall of Fame racemare Rachel Alexandra, was officially retired to Ocala Stud in December. Jess s Dream won his only start, which came in August 2015 at Saratoga. Various physical issues derailed his attempts at a further campaign. Nevertheless, he also debuts for $5,000 at Ocala Stud, which successfully partnered with breeder Stonestreet Farm to launch the stud career of Kantharos, who moved to Kentucky this year after several strong seasons in Florida. We ve been standing stallions for a long time, and there hasn t been a better-pedigreed horse in Florida than Jess s Dream, Ocala Stud s J. Michael O Farrell said. We are grateful to Stonestreet for the opportunity to stand another exciting stallion prospect. They Barbara D. Livingston Ride On Curlin is standing for a fee of $5,000 at Pleasant Acres Stallions in 2017. have one of the best operations in the entire industry, and they do a fantastic job of supporting their stallions. Meanwhile, Social Inclusion becomes the first son of Pioneerof the Nile the sire of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, as well as champion Classic Empire to enter stud in Florida. Social Inclusion last ran in 2015, but did not stand at stud in 2016 as owner Ron Sanchez s Rontos Racing Stable searched for a home for his stud career. That home is Florida, where locals are already familiar with his exploits. Social Inclusion burst onto the scene by winning his first two starts by a combined 17 1/2 lengths at Gulfstream Park including an allowance victory over Honor Code, then a graded stakes-winning juvenile and later an Eclipse Award champion. Social Inclusion earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 110 for that effort. Social Inclusion then finished third in the Wood Memorial behind Wicked Strong, beaten a nose by Samraat for second. That finish denied him the points to make the Kentucky Derby field. After finishing third in the Preakness, he cut back to shorter distances, finishing third to eventual Breeders Cup Classic winner Bayern in the Grade 2 Woody Stephens Stakes on the Belmont Stakes undercard. Social Inclusion was seventh in the Haskell Invitational to end his 3-year-old season. He won once from three starts as an older horse, including an 11 3/4-length allowance score at Parx Racing in his career finale. Stonewall s Prestige Stallions also adds a son of a rising young classic sire for 2017 in Uncle Vinny, from the phenomenal first crop of Uncle Mo. Uncle Vinny got his signature win when he was elevated to first via disqualification in the Grade 3 Sanford Stakes at Saratoga. A fellow Prestige newcomer, Zahadoom, by Bernardini, is a half-brother to multiple Grade 1 winner Ron the Greek. Irish-born Lebron, a winning son of international titan Galileo, enters stud at 4G Farm.
