UNLV is 5-1 at the Thomas & Mack Center this season with its only loss being to Oregon (83-79)... UNLV has been led by freshman forward Anthony Bennett, who is averaging 19.3 ppg and has led the Runnin' Rebels in scoring in eight of their 10 games and seven of their last eight... Bennett is second in scoring in the Mountain West and 32nd nationally, leading all freshmen... He was named the Dec. 10 MW Player of the Week for his efforts the previous week on the road... Junior forward Mike Moser led the team in rebounding with 8.3 rpg before he dislocated his elbow early in the game at Cal on Dec. 9... Moser is second on the team in scoring at 10.9 ppg, but has missed three of the team's last four games and is expected to continue to be out of action for a considerable amount of time... Prior to the game at Cal, Moser missed the game in his hometown of Portland because of a hip injury... Marshall is the only other player returning that averaged double figures in scoring last year (12.2 ppg). northern iowa panthers (6-4, 0-0) Northern Iowa had won three straight games before losing to Iowa (80-73) on Saturday at the Big Four Classic in Des Moines... Prior to that, the Panthers won at George Mason (82-77) in overtime on Dec. 8... UNI has two players averaging double figures in scoring in sophomore guard Deon Mitchell (13.7 ppg) and sophomore forward Seth Tuttle (10.3)... senior forward Jake Koch leads the team in rebounding (6.4 rpg), while Mitchell is also the team's assist leader (3.8 apg)... The Panthers have shot 45.3 percent from the field this season and 36.6 percent from 3-point range, averaging 70.5 ppg, while limiting their opponents to 62.4 ppg... In the loss to Iowa, Mitchell paced UNI with 23 points on 9-of-14 from the field, eclipsing the 20-point mark for the second time this season... Tuttle chipped in 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting with nine rebounds and senior guard Anthony James added 15 points... Northern Iowa was picked to finish third in this year's Missouri Valley Conference race behind Creighton and Illinois State... Both James and Tuttle were selected as honorable mention Preseason All-Missouri Valley... UNI returns 10 letterwinners, including two starters, from last year's team that finished 20-14 overall and was third in its league with a 9-9 mark... Head coach Ben Jacobson is in his seventh year at the school with a career record of 135-75 (.643). series history This will be only the second meeting between UNLV and Northern Iowa in men's basketball... Northern Iowa defeated UNLV in the school's only meeting, which took place in the 2010 NCAA Tournament's first round in Oklahoma City, 69-66, on Ali Farokhmanesh s 3-pointer with 4.9 seconds left... UNLV is 2-1 all-time in the Mountain West-Missouri Valley Conference Challenge with a home win over Southern Illinois (78-69) in 2009, a road win at Illinois State (82-51) in 2010 and a road loss at Wichita State (89-70) last year in 2011... Including this year's results, the Mountain West holds a 21-13 lead in the series. The two conferences split last year's matchups, 4-4, while the MW won the 2010 Challenge, 8-1, and the MVC took the 2009 Challenge, 5-4. last time vs northern iowa - march 18, 2010 in ncaa tournament Ali Farokhmanesh hit a 3-pointer from the left wing with 4.9 seconds left to lift ninth-seeded Northern Iowa over UNLV 69-66 on March 18, 2010, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Oklahoma City... Farokhmanesh found himself open after Kwadzo Ahelegbe had chewed up the majority of the clock following Oscar Bellfield's tying 3-pointer for UNLV with 35 seconds remaining... Johnny Moran reversed the ball to Farokhmanesh, who drained the jumper with the shot clock running down... The Runnin' Rebels got one last chance to tie it, but Tre'Von Willis didn't get his 3-pointer off before the final buzzer and it was off-target anyway... Farokhmanesh finished with 17 points, including three 3-pointers in the second half, and Ahelegbe added 13 points as the Panthers snapped a 20-year drought in the NCAA Tournament.

The first former player to become head coach of the program, Rice played for two seasons (1989-91) at UNLV as a guard on two of legendary coach Jerry Tarkanian's Final Four teams. Transfers, freshmen and medical redshirts were not eligible for the preseason list. The Mountain West had a total of two players on the list (San Diego State's Jamaal Franklin was the other). They will both enroll at UNLV next fall, Kendrick as a junior and Wood as a freshman. Kendrick, a former McDonald's High School All-American, is a 6-foot-7-inch, 205-pound sophomore guard at Indian Hills Community College in Iowa. Originally from College Park, Ga., as of Nov. 14, he was averaging 14.0 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.5 assists in 24.2 minutes per game for Indian Hills. The Warriors were 4-0 at that point in the season and were averaging 109.0 ppg. In addition to playing in the McDonald's High School All-American game in 2010, he also played in the Jordan Brand Classic scoring 13 points. Named to the Parade Magazine All-America third team, the Wheeler High School (Marietta, Ga.) graduate was also an ESPN/RISE All-America second team pick. Kendrick was ranked as the No. 3 player at his position in the class of 2010 by Rivals (15th overall) and Scout, and 44th overall by ESPN. He signed with Memphis out of high school and then transferred to Mississippi. Wood is a 6-foot-11-inch, 210-pound senior forward/guard at Findlay College Prep in Henderson, Nev. Originally from Palmdale, Calif., he is ranked as the No. 36 overall player in the class of 2013 by Rivals and No. 8 at his position. Scout lists him at No. 13 at his position, while ESPN has him No. 63 overall. As of Nov. 14, he was averaging 15.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game this season as Findlay started the year 4-0. Last year Findlay finished 32-1 and won its third National High School Invitational title in four years. Wood averaged 8.3 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.2 blocked shots per game off the bench as a junior for the Pilots. He was a teammate of current Runnin' Rebel Anthony Bennett last year at Findlay. Kendrick and Wood join Dantley Walker to make up UNLV's 2013 recruiting class. Walker will join the Runnin' Rebels as a freshman next year after finishing a two-year LDS mission. Chris Maathuis joins UNLV head coach Dave Rice in the studio Sundays during the season for a unique half-hour of game reviews, previews and program features. The show airs at 11:35 p.m. are also archived in All-Access on UNLVRebels.com each Monday. the blum room The press room at the Thomas & Mack Center was renamed the Bob Blum Media Center in a dedication ceremony on Nov. 17, just prior to the game vs. Jacksonville State. Blum passed away in July 2012 at the age of 91. Affectionately known as the Dean of West Coast Broadcasters, he was one of the most beloved figures in Southern Nevada. He spent 27 seasons as the radio voice of the UNLV women's basketball team and he broadcast over 1,000 UNLV sporting events during his career, including men's basketball, football, baseball and softball.
