-- 74 World Scotland Fife, Scotland Crail - Balcomie Links A combination of stunning coastal views, centuries of history and hugely enjoyable golf is what makes Balcomie Links one of Scotland's most finely polished golfing gems. This traditional, classic links course was laid out by the old master himself, Tom Morris, and opened in 1895. Created in the days when course design was governed by the natural lie of the land and not the mechanical earth mover, Balcomie has the unusual combination of three par fives, six par threes and nine par fours, producing a tough par of 69. Extraordinary holes abound, along with those which seriously challenge and those which are more comfortable. The sum total is a layout which both enchants and delights, but which also demands and punishes, testing all the skills in a golfer's armory as well as his nerve. Those length seekers who believe Balcomie will be a soft touch, do so at their peril. Not content with a devilishly testing layout, Old Tom designed the course in such a way as to take maximum advantage of its exhilarating seaside location. Shots over rocky bays, long par threes with greens perched on top of vertical cliffs, shots to greens seemingly engulfed by gorse, curving par fours round sandy strands - daring the golfer to cut off too much, shots from cliff tops to greens and fairways invitingly laid out below: all these and more make up the Balcomie experience. A round at Balcomie is always one to savour and will provide happy memories for many years to come.
28 5 World Scotland Carnoustie, Scotland Carnoustie - Championship The Championship Course has hosted eight Open Championships, one Women s British Open and two Seniors Open, making it one of the very few to have done so in the UK. It is one of the three courses used for the annual Dunhill Links, the others being Kingsbarns and the Old Course in St Andrews. In 2018, The Open Championship returned to Carnoustie and the Championship Course was voted Best Golf Course in Scotland over 100 by the general public, the second time it has won the award in the past three years.
-- 51 World Scotland Tayport, Scotland Scotscraig GC The 13th oldest course in the world, Scotscraig Championship course was designed under the guidance of Tom Morris & James Braid, featuring a unique mix of Heathland & Links. Scotscraig hosted six Open Qualifiers between 1984-2010. The course turned 200 years old in 2017, and the clubhouse is more than 120 years old, opening in 1896. In 1923, the course was redesigned with the assistance of James Braid, one of the "Triumvirate". The course still retains many of Braid's traditional architectural features, namely large rolling greens and well positioned bunkers. Scotscraig today is largely unchanged, and presents a fair but serious challenge to all golfers.
64 6 World Scotland Kingsbarns, Scotland Kingsbarns In the eighth decade of the 18th Century, at the same time as the Thirteen States were declaring their independence and the Constitution of the United States was scripted, the Merchants and Lairds of Kingsbarns drafted articles to form the Kingsbarns Golfing Society. Golf was resurrected on Kingsbarns Links at the dawning of the 21st Century. The only Scottish course to be built on links land in over 70 years and with its seaside setting, Kingsbarns joined the great old courses of nearby St Andrews and Carnoustie, bringing with it a new dimension to the traditional Scottish game. Kingsbarns co-hosts the annual European Tour s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship (26th 29th September 2019) and in 2017 hosted The Ricoh Women s British Open.
-- 21 World Scotland Dundee, Scotland Gullane #1 The history of Gullane No. 1 Course stretches back to 1884. Carved into the ancient links turf with pot bunkers, wispy grasses and smooth-running greens the course is a unique challenge for the serious golfer. Add to that the fabulous views across to Edinburgh, the Firth of Forth, Fife and beyond and you have one of the world s most cherished golfing experiences. The course has been the setting for a host of highly acclaimed tournaments including the 2015 AAM Scottish Open and final qualifying for the Open Championship on five occasions. The Scottish Amateur Championship and the Ladies British Open Amateur Championship have both been hosted over No. 1 on four occasions. In 2013 it was voted in 21st place in the Top 100 Courses in Scotland by Today s Golfer and recognized as having one of the best holes in the world by Golf Magazine (USA) in the form of the spectacular par five 3rd.
51 7 World Scotland North Berwick, Scotland North Berwick The West Links Course is a true links located on the edge of the Firth of Forth. It is a championship course having hosted many events over the years. Playing the course is all about imagination with the sea in play on 6 holes! The beach is just one long and sometimes wet hazard if the tide is in. You will find walls in the middle of fairways and in front of a green. All of these hazards are an important part of our history charting the development of the course from a few holes through to the full 18 hole course.
