BLUE HOSE VOLLEYBALL The Checklist P The Blue Hose will host two matches this week. On Tuesday, the squad hosts Gardner-Webb. Friday evening, the Blue Hose host Coastal Carolina. P PC has seven matches to finish the 2010 season. All of the matches are in the Big South Conference. Four of those are at home. P Head coach Chris Belshe s 2010 team currently has two student-athletes on the 1,000-kill list in Amanda Kettles and Lisa Shelley and one in the 1,500- dig club with Elizabeth Heineman. Liz Leads The Way MATCH NOTES Senior Elizabeth Heineman reached a major milestone at ETSU, recording her 1,500th career dig. Heineman, who currently has 1,504, has established the bar pretty high for those who follow. Through her first three seasons, Heineman led the team in digs. Her 534 in 2007 mark not only a PC single-season Division I record, but it is the first and only time that a Blue Hose player has recorded at least 500 digs in a single year in Division I. Heineman s 415 digs in 2009 are second and her 397 are third on PC s Division I single-season list. Currently, Heineman has 158 digs and should easily clear 200 during her final year. Climbing The Ladder The 2010 volleyball team has several players that are getting ready to enter the top five for single-season topfive lists. Andrea Barman is one solo block away from 20, which would put her in a tie for fifth on the Division I single-season list. Barman needs just six block assists to take over fifth place on the chart. She is just three total blocks away from 71, which would allow her to be in sole possession of fifth place for total blocks. Ashley Dunlap needs six aces to move into a fifth-place tie (35) while Kilee Ruppe is just 105 assists away from moving past her total last year for third place on the single-season chart. Presley Mabrey is already fourth on the single-season kills list with 337 just 43 from overtaking Lisa Shelley s 2008 total for third. Dunlap needs 75 digs to tie Rachel Aug 31 Furman at Greenville, S.C. L, 0-3 Bear Brawl Sep 03 Mercer at Macon, Ga. W, 3-2 Sep 03 The Citadel at Macon, Ga. W, 3-1 Sep 04 UT-Martin at Macon, Ga. Team Accomplishments PC needs just two wins to move into second place on its top-five list for most wins in a year since moving to Division I. The Blue Hose defeated GWU 3-0 in front of 135 fans on Sept. 28 of this season. During that match, Lisa Shelley led the way with 15 kills while Presley Mabrey had 11. Kilee Ruppe dished out 34 assists and tallied three aces. Ashley Dunlap posted 10 digs, but Mabrey s 11 gave her a double-double. Elizabeth Heineman totaled nine digs in the sweep. Similar to last year, PC dropped a 3-1 decision to Coastal Carolina early in the match, just like this year. The second time around, the Blue Hose defeated the Chanticleers. PC will be looking to salvage a split this season against CCU on Friday evening. Counting Down Heading into this week, the Blue Hose have just seven matches remaining on the 2010 slate, including four home matches. This week, PC hosts two matches and are winding down to Senior Day, which will be held Nov. 6 against Radford. Two At The Top Seniors Amanda Kettles and Lisa Shelley recently became the first two PC student-athletes to record 1,000 kills for PC since making the move to Division I. Kettles and Shelley each reached the mark during the UNC Asheville game. Next on the list, should she keep up the current pace she is on is Presley Mabrey. Toppling Down The League Leaders On Oct. 16, the Presbyterian College volleyball team took on Winthrop during Homecoming Weekend for the Blue Hose. After falling behind 1-0, PC went ahead 2-1 and eventually won 3-2. The Blue Hose were led by Presley Mabrey s 25 kills and Kilee Ruppe s career-high 55 assists. The duo also posted double-doubles. It marked the second victory over Winthrop since PC moved to Division I, with the last win coming in 2008. The Eagles were 6-1 and atop the Big South standings until PC won the match. All About Amanda Senior Amanda Kettles is having the best season of her career. Kettles currently leads the Big South in attack percentage with a.375 average. In Big South games, she is even better, drilling the floor.428 of the time. Kettles is doing so well, in fact, she leads all NCAA reclassifying schools in that category. If PC were eligible for postseason play, Kettles would rank 34th in the country in that statistic. Kilee s KORNER Redshirt-senior Kilee Ruppe s blog, Kilee s Korner, is a behind the scenes look with a Division I student-athlete. The blog has pictures and is updated weekly. Go to www.gobluehose.com and click on the volleyball page. Once there, look on the left-hand side for the tab. 2

Chris Belshe Head Coach Fifth Season Chris Belshe is in his fifth year as the head coach of the Presbyterian College volleyball program, leading the Blue Hose through the transition to Division I. In his four years with the team, Belshe has compiled a 54-78 mark, including a 45-53 record at the Division I level. In 2009, Belshe guided the team to a 7-9 Big South Conference mark, including sweeps over Radford and Gardner-Webb. He coached two Big South Conference all-freshman team members in Allison Brown and Presley Mabrey while Ashley Dunlap garnered a spot on the all-academic team. PC recorded 13 wins in 2008. However, the most impressive performance of the season was the 3-2 victory over NCAA Tournament participant Liberty on Nov. 8 in Clinton, S.C. Prior to the season, Kelsey McKee was tabbed preseason all-conference. Amanda Kettles garnered second-team all-conference accolades while Rachel Lewis was named to the all-academic team in 2008. In 2007 Belshe led the squad to an impressive overall record of 20-13, and a 6-8 record against Big South opponents. Belshe also guided the team to tournament championships at Jacksonville, Wilmington and Western Carolina. By winning 15 straight matches, the 2007 squad moved into second place in the record books for longest winning streaks. The Blue Hose also went undefeated in the month of September and remained unbeaten in 26 straight sets, setting a new school record. Under his influence, the team went 4-0 in five game matches and was one of four schools in the Big South to have a 20 win season (with Liberty, Winthrop and High Point). Belshe is excited about the support and the direction in which the program is headed. Presbyterian College has created an environment of strong athletics and academics so that our student-athletes can really excel, not only on the court but in the classroom. The discipline, work ethic and passion it takes to be a Division I athlete carries over into all aspects of life, and I truly believe all our athletes will be well-prepared for anything they will face in the future. Belshe s first year at PC was severely affected by injuries, and the 2006 squad still managed nine wins. Freshman Julie Hollrah was named to the South Atlantic Conference s All-Freshman team, and setter Rachel Lewis was selected to the Preseason All-SAC First Team. Belshe came to Presbyterian with a strong background of volleyball coaching experience, having coached at the club, high school and collegiate levels. Prior to joining the Blue Hose, Belshe was the assistant coach for the Spanish River High School boys volleyball team in Boca Raton, Fla. and helped lead the Sharks to a state tournament title. In the fall of 2005, Belshe was a volunteer at Lynn University, training individual student-athletes and organizing practices. Belshe spent almost four years with Illini Elite volleyball club in Bloomington, Ill. and coached at various age levels, ranging from youth to elite high school teams. Three of his teams reached the USAV Junior Olympic Nationals. His 18-and-under squad qualified twice, becoming the first 18-andunder Illini Elite team to qualify for Nationals in 2003-04. All together, Belshe coached the 18-and-under Illini Elite club team from November of 2003 through July of 2005, garnering a slot every year in the list of top-10 regional teams. More impressively, every senior on his 18-and-under team committed to play NCAA Division I volleyball. A native of Wheaton, Ill., Belshe attended Illinois State University and graduated in 2005 with a degree in Finance. He and his wife, Jen, reside in Simpsonville, S.C., with their newborn son, Caelan Luke. 5
