Greetings Masters Swimmers! The short course season is winding down, and the last meet of the season for Wisconsin swimmers is the USMS Short Course Nationals, which will be held April 25-28 in Mesa, AZ. Sixty three swimmers will be making their way to the warmth and sunshine of AZ, to swim in the meet. Let?s all cheer them on! The state meet was held the weekend of March 23-24. I would like to send a huge Thank You on behalf of Wisconsin Masters Swimming, to Jeanne Seidler and her family for running another very successful State meet. Everything ran smoothly, and there was a lot of fast swimming. We even had representation from other states to add to the competition. More highlights can be found elsewhere in this newsletter. Since the short course season is ending, we need to turn our training to long course. The long course meter State meet will be held Saturday, June 15. Even though it will be early in the season, we have the opportunity to swim at the Schroeder Aquatic Center again. The water is cool and deep, which makes for a fast pool! Put the meet on your calendar, and let?s support it! As the weather turns warmer, thoughts turn to open water swimming, especially Wisconsin sanctioned events. One event is the Cream Cit y Classic, a Milwaukee river swim that will be in its second year. There were favorable comments after the inaugural swim. The other sanctioned event is the Madison Open Wat er Sw im (MOWS), which is a well-organized event taking place in Lake Monona in Madison. Think about trying one of these events, and do something different. For those of you who do not swim with a workout group, consider using some of the resources on the USMS website. There are articles on stroke techniques, training plans, and videos. These can all help improve your swimming experience. Take advantage of this membership benefit. You will need to establish an account 1 Continued on next page

Tara Rae Warren August 11, 1970 ~ February 28, 2019 Tara Rae Warren, 48, of Sturgeon Bay, passed away Thursday afternoon, February 28, 2019 at Door County Medical Center in Sturgeon Bay. Tara enjoyed swimming, bowling, and traveling. She liked horses,?80s music, and movies especially, Star Wars and Grease. Her favorite color was purple, and she was alw ays one to greet others around her. Tara was a masters swimmer who had her start in Special Olympics. She participated in all the State SCY Champs meets from 2010 through 2014. You might remember her as she was the only swimmer with Down's Syndrome at those meets. She put her whole heart into swimming. It was a privilege to have her in Masters swimming with us.? Jeanne Seidler From the Chair... I would like like to thank the following for their financial support on this project: - Coach Tim Capps & The Baraboo Team - Bob Corris - Dr. Geoff Mykleby - Dr. Darryl Stich - Julie Van Cleave - Wisconsin Masters Aquatic Club - A3 Performance Hope to see you in Mesa 2019! Coach Fred Six WMAC Sw im m ers Com plet e USMS One Hour E-Post al The USMS one hour e-postal event was held January 1- February 28. In this event, swimmers swim as many yards as possible in one hour and enter their results on the USMS website. USMS swimmers from all across the country participate and results are compared across the board by age group. Wisconsin swimmers who com pleted the event and posted results i nclude: Jennifer May, Christele Schwerer, Karen Hoffman, Julie Van Cleave, Susan Bonis, and Mary Schneider Complete results can be found at this link. The next USMS E-postal event is the 5k/10k swim held May 15-September 15. Dave Clark Classic at Whit efish Bay High School March 3, 2019 Correspondent: Pam Dowling For this year?s meet, we beat cold temps outdoors and heated it up indoors for a great meet for all! There were a number of folks that posted personal bests, way to go! We had 109 register to swim. Dave Clark was front and center to meet and greet all, and even swim a race. The real work and fun was achieved in the pool and there was one individual that posted a record! Cat ie Knight, age group 35-39, set a 500 free record as a split in the 1650. She did a 05:44.0! She was pretty psyched with good reason! We really appreciate the kind words from everyone about the venue, the efficiency of the meet and the treats! It?s always fun to have new folks who have never competed before come out and do great! The draw for three of the newbies was the 50 fin race? we will keep that on for next year! Thank you everyone for participating! We look forward to another fun filled day of swimming next year! 5 Dave Clark

Sun Prairie Short Course Yards Meet Fun Time on Winter Day Sunday, February 10, 2019 Correspondent: Carl Millholland Winter was still in full effect for the Sun Prairie meet, but spirits were high nonetheless. The pool seems quite tropical? brightly lit with water disinfected via salt and liquid chlorine as well as a UV system. 58 swimmers signed up for events. We had some new faces from the Madison and Monona area, plus several WMAC stalwarts. After the meet a number of swimmers gathered at a little place just south of the school called Chicken Lips. Very much a dive bar, the place is well-known for its chicken wings. We passed several tasty baskets around the table, telling swimming stories over a few beers. It was a good day. McFarland Short Course Met ers Meet Records Fall, Swim m ers Say Good-bye t o AOAC Sunday, March 9, 2019 Correspondent: Carl Millholland This year was the last Masters swim meet in the 25 meter Angie O'Donnell Aquatic Center in McFarland. Built in 1978, the original pool was a six-lane rectangular competition pool in constant demand, both from students and across the village's demographic spectrum. After years of planning and referendums, a new 10-lane pool will take its place. The new pool will still have a 25 meter configuration, which is great news to Wisconsin Masters swimmers. In addition to the West Bend 25 meter pool, McFarland offers us a chance to crack SCM records. And crack we did! 22 records fell on March 9, across many ages for both men and women. See next page for results. With only 40 swimmers registered, this is an impressive number. WMAC Swimmers to Compete at the YMCA Nationals From Apr 11 to Apr 14, 10 WMAC swimmers are traveling to Orlando to compete in the YMCA Masters Nationals. From Oshkosh, Melinda Mann, Jeff Schmiedel and Kelly Wynns. From Schroeder, Geoff Mykleby, Jeanne Seidler, Mindy Seidler, Barbara Lemm, Jim Arnold, Fred Salzmann and Phyllis Jane Smith. About 400 swimmers are attending this meet, members mostly from YMCAs in the Midwest and East Coast. It is a very friendly meet. Fred looks forward to competing against his friend, Olympian Yoshi Oyakawa, in the 100 backstroke. Yoshi was the 1952 Olympic gold medalist in the 100 backstroke. He Swam an IM epostal And all he got was a t-shirt When Scott Conley heard about an 2400 yard IM epostal called IM Madness, he said, "Dude, I gotta do that!" And did it he did on March 31. Organized by North Carolina Masters Swimming, the epostal consisted of 4 X 200 IM, 2 X 400 IM and 1 X 800 for a cumulative time. The epostal does offer shorter IM sets, but seriously what's the point? Swimmers can rest between laps, but those rests count against your overall time. Scott, however, did not rest, swimming the entire 2400 yards without stop at the Robert Kueny YMCA in Kenosha in a time of 42:16. Scott beat out another WMAC swimmer by a Scott Conley whopping 6 seconds.
