Diddle Arena on Friday and Saturday. The Demon Deacons will have three tough tests, as each opponent is over.500 early in the year. Wake will begin play against LSU (6-1) on Friday at 11 a.m. before playing host Western Kentucky (6-1) later that evening at 8 p.m. The Deacs will then wrap up play against Xavier (4-2) on Saturday at 12 p.m. All times are eastern standard time. Wake Forest enters the weekend with a 2-2 record after defeating Charleston Southern and North Florida and falling to Arkansas and Georgetown. Senior middle blocker Carlin Salon led the way for Wake Forest throughout the Deacon Invitational, as she was named to the All- Tournament Team. In four matches, Salmon collected 36 kills and hit.314 while recording an outstanding 25 blocks. Salmon did the majority of her blocking work against Charleston Southern, shattering her career-best performance with 14 total blocks. Twelve of those blocks were block assists, which was just one way from tying the Wake Forest school record. Her previous career-high was eight. Her counterpart in the middle, sophomore Kristin Grissom, also performed well at the net with 31 kills, a.312 hitting percentage and 18 blocks. She recorded five total blocks in her first three matches of the season, as she was in the starting lineup for the first time of her career. The Demon Deacons also looked heavily to senior outside hitter Kadija Fornah who tallied 33 kills and led the team with 41 digs. She recorded 16 digs in two separate matches, tying a career high. Similar to last weekend, Wake Forest will be facing teams in which it is not very familiar. The Demon Deacons have played LSU and Western Kentucky just one time apiece, losing in both instances, and has never played Xavier. The Deacs last played LSU on September 9, 2006 and last played WKU on November 7, 1986. Ne x t Up... Wake Forest will begin conference play when Duke comes to town on Friday at 7 p.m. to begin the Black & Gold Challenge. The Demon Deacons and the Blue Devils will be competing in the first-ever televised volleyball match in Reynolds Gym. The Deacs will then play either Charlotte or High Point on Saturday at 5 p.m. 2011 TOP PERFORMERS # Player Pos. Pct. Asst. Her previous career-best was eight total blocks, and the 12 block assists were one away from tying a Wake Forest school record. Beck Earns Preseason All-ACC Junior middle blocker Andrea Beck has been named to the Preseason All-ACC team as selected by the league s 12 head coaches. She was one of 18 players across the league who were selected. Beck also earned All-ACC honors at the conclusion of last season, as she was second on the team with 312 kills and had a team-high.320 hitting percentage. Fornah Rising in the Record Books Senior outside hitter Kadija Fornah is on pace to cement her name in the Wake Forest record book. Fornah is already 10th all-time in kills with 930 for her career. She needs just 70 kills to be just the eighth player in school history to reach 1,000 for their career. Fornah is also currently ninth in kills/set (2.76) and 8th in attack attempts (2,692). Lo o k i n g to Im p r o v e o n t h e Be s t The 2011 Wake Forest volleyball team is trying to improve on one of its best seasons in school history. In 2010, Wake Forest finished the season with a 19-12 overall record and a 11-9 record in ACC play. The 11 wins in conference were the most wins by any Demon Deacon volleyball team. Holmes Approaching #100 Wake Forest head volleyball coach Heather Kahl Holmes is 10 wins away from the 100th of her career. Holmes is in her seventh season at the helm and has a career record of 90-101. Five Fresh Faces After losing a group of four seniors from last year s squad, Wake Forest has welcomed five freshmen to make up for the departures. The five newcomers include Mary Hoey (6-0, OH), Danae Rosendall (6-2, S), Dani Thompson (5-7, Libero), Ashlee Rusk (6-1, MB) and Jazmen Russell (5-11, OH). Several of the freshmen will compete for playing time right away.

The Demon Deacons have been named Deacon Invitational Champions on six different occasions (1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2008) and finished second last season, dropping only one match to Georgia (3-1). Carlin Salmon was named to the Deacon Invitational All-Tournament Team this season. 2011 Te a m Ca p ta i n s Senior defensive specialist Cambrey Oehler and junior middle blocker Andrea Beck will serve as team captains for the Wake Forest volleyball team in 2011. Championship Pedigree Wake Forest freshmen Mary Hoey and Dani Thompson have plenty of experience in big-game situations. As teammates at Pope High School in Marietta, Ga., the duo guided the Greyhounds to back-to-back state championships in 2009 and 2010. Hoey served as an outside hitter, while Thompson was the team s libero. Both players earned AVCA Under Armour High School All- America honors during their senior seasons. Deacons at Home Wake Forest will play the majority of its matches at home in 2011 with 17 of its 30 matches scheduled to be played in Reynolds Gym. The Demon Deacons will play 11 true road matches, while two matches will be played at a neutral location. Admission to all Wake Forest home matches will be free throughout the season. Wake is 2-2 so far this season at home. California Girls In the last two seasons, Wake Forest has been able to bring in three players from the West Coast over the East Coast. Sophomores Kylie Hargreaves (Ladera Ranch) and Kristin Grissom (Rancho Cucamonga) joined the Demon Deacons from California last season, while Jazmen Russell came to Wake this year from Hacienda Heights, Calif. Ro c k So l i d in t h e Mi d d l e With senior Carlin Salmon and junior Andrea Beck patrolling the net, Wake Forest will have a significant presence at the middle blocking position. Salmon was third on the team last year with 254 kills and hit at a.304 mark. She also led the team with 116 total blocks. Heather Kahl Holmes is in her seventh season at the helm of the Wake Forest volleyball program. She was promoted to head coach in July of 2005 after serving as an assistant coach for the Demon Deacons for five seasons prior. In six seasons as the head coach, Kahl Holmes has amassed a career record of 88-99 overall and 55-71 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The 2010 squad set a new program record with 11 conference victories, finishing the ACC portion of the schedule with an 11-9 record. Prior to that, her teams tied the previous school record of 10 ACC wins in a single season in three of her first five years at the helm. In 2010, the team also collected several notable victories, including a weekend sweep on the road at Clemson and Georgia Tech, a road win over nationally ranked Florida State and a three-game sweep over ACC Champion Duke in front of a packed house at home. In her first season as head coach, Kahl Holmes led Wake Forest to one of the most successful ACC seasons in program history. The Demon Deacons finished 17-14 overall and 10-12 in the ACC. Kahl Holmes also led the Deacs to a pair of invitational championships in 2005, winning the Black & Gold Challenge and the UTA Invitational. Wake Forest posted a 12-3 record at Reynolds Gymnasium under Kahl Holmes. Senior setter Erin Borhart was also named second team All-ACC in 2005. In her second season as head coach in 2006, Kahl Holmes continued to rebuild the program with a young team. The Deacons went 14-17 overall and ended the year with their second straight 10-win ACC season, finishing 10-12 in conference play. Wake Forest was runner-up at two invitational tournaments early in the season. The Deacs took second place at the season-opening Coors Invitational, hosted by Colorado State, and at their home tournament, the Black & Gold Challenge. Under the direction of Kahl Holmes, sophomore Natalie Mullikin and junior Jackie Lucas combined to re-write the Wake Forest record books at the middle blocker position in 2006. Mullikin finished the year as Wake s single-season record holder in total blocks, block solos and blocks per game, while Lucas broke the school s single-season record with 114 block assists. Mullikin was named second team All-ACC and to the All-ACC Academic Team. 4 Heather Kahl holmes Head Coach Sixth Season Clemson, 1996 The 2007 season was a tough one for Kahl Holmes, as injuries thrust young players into key roles. Despite an 8-23 record, Kahl Holmes was able to groom several young players that will be key contributors in the years to come. Under Kahl Holmes in 2007, Mullikin earned first team All-ACC accolades and freshman setter Kelsey Jones was named to the All-ACC Freshman Team. Both players also earned Academic All-ACC honors. The 2008 campaign started out with a bang as the Deacons started with a school-record 13-4 record and was a program best 12-1 at home. Kahl Holmes guided the team to tournaments wins at the Deacon Invitational, Appalachian State Invite and the Black & Gold Challenge. Wake finished the year with a 19-13 record and was 10-10 in the conference. Natalie Mullikin cemented herself as one of the best players to wear the Black & Gold as she finished her career as the school s most prolific blocker. She also earned AVCA All-American honors in 2008 to go along with her second-straight ACC First Team honors. After the Deacs struggled through an injury-riddled first 10 matches of the 2009 season, Kahl Holmes was able to regroup the team and lead them to an above.500 record over the remaining 21 matches, including a six-match win streak midway through the season. Wake Forest ended the year with an 11-20 overall record and a 9-11 record in ACC action. In 10 seasons with the Demon Deacons, Kahl Holmes has coached three honorable mention All-Americans, three All-Region selections, 11 All-ACC players, one ACC Player of the Year, three AVCA All-District team members and one ACC Rookie of the Year. As an assistant coach from 2000-04, Kahl Holmes served as the Demon Deacons recruiting coordinator. In addition to coordinating all recruiting visits, she helped with day-to-day operations and was in charge of the guidance and training of the setters. Kahl Holmes also carried the responsibility of developing the team s defensive system and game strategies. Bringing a wealth of experience to the floor both as a player and as a coach, Kahl Holmes familiarity with the program will help the Wake Forest volleyball team build on tradition and continue to rise in both the ACC and on a national level. Prior to her arrival at Wake Forest, Kahl Holmes began her coaching career as an assistant at Clemson. An assistant coach for five seasons, she helped lead the Tigers to a 1997 ACC Tournament championship, a 1999 ACC regular season championship and three NCAA Tournament appearances. She also coached one AVCA All-American in her tenure at Clemson. Before beginning her coaching career, Kahl Holmes was a standout player for the Tigers, leading them to their first two NCAA Tournament appearances and one ACC Tournament final as the team s starting setter from 1991-94.
