The Sox opened the homestand last night with a 9-0 loss to the Athletics. Following this three-game series and a day off on Monday, the White Sox continue the homestand with two games vs. Philadelphia (8/23-24) and four vs. Seattle (8/25-28) The Sox went 4-5 on the last trip to Kansas City (1-2), Miami (2-1) and Cleveland (1-2) from 8/9-18 and 1-2 on the last homestand on 8/5-7 vs. Baltimore Since owning the second-best record in the majors at 23-10 on 5/9, the White Sox have gone 34-53. TONIGHT'S STORYLINES Chris Sale makes his seventh attempt at his 15th win Sale is 0-4 with a 4.43 ERA (20 ER/40.2 IP) over his last six starts. With a win tonight, the White Sox will record three straight winning seasons over Oakland for the fi rst time since 1993-95. The Sox have gone 12-21 (5-5 at home) in the second half to fall a season-high seven games under.500. Eight of Chicago's last 10 games have been decided by two runs or less. Adam Eaton is 11-28 (.393) with two home runs, six RBI and six runs scored over his last seven games. AVI ON ASSIGNMENT OF Avisail Garcia, who has been on the 15-day disabled list since 8/9 (retro to 8/7) with a sprained right knee, has been sent to Class AAA Charlotte on an injury rehab assignment. Garcia, 25, is hitting.240 (69-288) with nine home runs and 36 RBI over 86 games this season he was 5-15 (.333) with three homers and six RBI in August prior to suffering the injury. LAST NIGHT'S RECAP Kendall Graveman threw a complete-game, two-hitter to lead Oakland to a 9-0 victory over the White Sox. James Shields suffered the loss, allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits and three walks over 4.2 IP Shields fell to 0-3 with a 17.36 ERA (27 ER/14.0 IP) over four starts in August. Tommy Kahnle threw 2.0 IP in relief to extend his scoreless streak to 6.0 IP over his last four appearances. Rookie Tim Anderson went 0-3 to end his career-high, 11- game hitting streak. The Sox were shut out for the ninth time this season and matched their season low with two hits (5/30 at the Mets) they sent just 28 men to the plate, their fewest in a nine-inning game since 6/15/15 at Pittsburgh (STATS). CLOSE CALLS Sixty-nine of the White Sox 121 games in 2016 have been decided by one or two runs, including 40 of the last 62 30 of Chicago's last 33 wins have been by three runs or less. The Sox 44 one-run games this season are the most in the major leagues. QUALITY AND QUANTITY The White Sox have made 1,226 quality starts since 2003, the second-highest total in the majors behind the Mets (1,233). The Sox rank second in the American League with 69 quality starts this season, trailing only Toronto (76) Jose Quintana (T2nd, 18) and Chris Sale (T7th, 16) rank among the AL leaders. OUT GOES FRAZIER Todd Frazier is tied for third for in the major leagues with 31 home runs Frazier is on pace to hit a career-high 42 homers, which would tie Jim Thome (2006) and Frank Thomas (2003) for the fourth-highest total in White Sox history. Bill Melton (1971) and Dick Allen (1972 and '74) are the only players in White Sox history to lead the American League in homers no Sox player has ever led the majors. EATON STARTS AND FINISHES Adam Eaton hit his fi rst career grand slam on 8/17 at Cleveland, a game-winning shot off Cody Allen in the ninth inning, to give the White Sox a 10-7 victory over Cleveland. According to Elias, Eaton is the second player this season to hit a slam in the ninth inning or later which turned a defi cit into a lead, joining Oakland's Khris Davis (5/17 vs. Texas). Eaton also hit his seventh career leadoff home run on 8/14 at Miami (third of 2016), fourth-most in Sox history behind Ray Durham (20), Tim Raines (nine) and Alejandro De Aza (eight). WHITE SOX VS. OAKLAND The White Sox lead the season series, 3-2. Chicago is hitting.216/.257/.299 with a 3.68 ERA (18 ER/44.0 IP) and has been outscored by Oakland, 19-16. The Sox have won 12 of their last 17 games overall against the A's and seven of the last 11 at U.S. Cellular Field. Chicago has won back-to-back season series (2014-15) against the A s for the fi rst time since 1993-95. The Sox trail the all-time series, 284-302 they are 147-143 at home (88-83 at U.S. Cellular Field) and 137-159 on the road. STREAKING VS. OAKLAND Jose Abreu is hitting.385/.476/.615 with three doubles, three home runs and 12 RBI during his current 14-game hitting streak vs. Oakland, the longest streak by a Sox player vs. the A s since Jermaine Dye in 2007-08 (also 14). Adam Eaton is hitting.420/.463/.560 with three doubles, two triples, two RBI, 11 runs scored and eight multihit efforts during his current 11-game hitting streak against Oakland. EATON WITH THE ASSIST Adam Eaton leads all major-league outfielders with 17 outfield assists, two more than Pittsburgh's Starling Marte. Eaton, who also leads the majors with 22 defensive runs saved, is on pace to record 23 assists, which would be the most by a Sox outfi elder since Bibb Falk's 26 in 1924. STILL IN SEARCH OF ELUSIVE NO. 10 Jose Quintana was unable to record his career-best 10th win on 8/16 at Cleveland despite allowing two runs over 6.0 IP to keep his ERA at 2.85, fi fth-best in the American League. Quintana has won exactly nine games in each of the last four seasons (2013-16), going 36-37 during that span with a 3.29 ERA. Quintana, who is 4-1 with a 2.21 ERA (13 ER/53.0 IP) over his last eight starts, is attempting to become the fi rst Sox pitcher since Joel Horlen in 1967 (2.06) to lead the AL in ERA. 30 FOR 30 David Robertson ranks third in the American League with 30 saves, the third consecutive season he has reached that milestone and second in a row with the White Sox. Robertson joins Bobby Thigpen (1988-91), Roberto Hernandez (1995-96), Bobby Jenks (2006-08) and Keith Foulke (2000-01) as the only pitchers in Sox history to record 30 saves in back-to-back seasons. HOLD IT THERE Nate Jones ranks second in the American League with 24 holds, tied with Jesse Crain (2011) and Matt Thornton (2009) for the fi fth-highest total in White Sox history. Barry Jones (30 in 1990) holds the franchise record, followed by Zach Duke (26 in 2015), Thornton (26 in 2012) and Kelly Wunsch (25 in 2000). ON THE FARM RHP Zach Burdi, one of Chicago's two fi rst-round picks (26th overall) in the 2016 draft, has thrown 14.1 consecutive scoreless IP over his last eight appearances with Class AAA Charlotte and Class AA Birmingham, allowing three hits with 20 strikeouts. Burdi, 21, earned his fi rst professional save on 8/16 for Charlotte, throwing 2.0 scoreless IP with a career-high fi ve strikeouts (third time) vs. Gwinnett. RHP Alec Hansen, the Sox second-round pick, has gone 2-0 with a 1.19 ERA (5 ER/37.2 IP) and 57 strikeouts over nine starts between the AZL White Sox and Great Falls, allowing just 12 hits. The 6-foot-7, 235-pound Hansen extended his scoreless streak to 17.0 IP on 8/16 for Advanced Rookie Great Falls at Ogden, allowing zero hits over 5.0 IP. FROM THE TRAINING ROOM The White Sox currently have 10 players on the disabled list: C Alex Avila (strained right hamstring) was returned from his injury rehab assignment at Class AAA Charlotte on 7/20. OF Avisail Garcia (sprained right knee) has been on the 15-day disabled list since 8/9 (retro to 8/7) Garcia begins a rehab assignment tonight at Class AAA Charlotte. RHP Miguel Gonzalez (strained right groin) was placed on the disabled list on 8/12 he is rehabbing with the team. OF Austin Jackson has been on the disabled list since 6/10 to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. INF Brett Lawrie, who has been disabled since 7/27 (retro to 7/22) with a strained left hamstring, is rehabbing at Class AA Birmingham. RHP Zach Putnam underwent surgery on 8/4 to remove a bone fragment from his right elbow the ligament was intact. RHPs Jake Petricka (right hip) and Daniel Webb (Tommy John), INF Matt Davidson (broken right foot) and OF Charlie Tilson (torn left hamstring) are out for the season.
