FOOTPRINTS Volume 6, Issue 1 Spring 2016 President s Letter Ushering in 2016 means more than starting a new year for me; it means starting a new journey with HARRC. At the end of the board meeting on January 13, Brad Colwell passed the president s gavel to me - bringing a close to his five-year term as HARRC President (the longest in HARRC history), and marking a new chapter in my service with the organization. It has been a pleasure for me to volunteer as the newsletter editor for the last three years, in addition to serving on the board for the last two years, and I am excited to serve in this new capacity. Brad Colwell, along with Jim Collins, Steve Whittle, and Jim Vorhauer (all of whom also recently stepped down from the board), set the bar of leadership very high. I, and the other board members, have very large shoes to fill! by Kelly Spreha We will take 2016 to continue the rich traditions of HARRC, such as the weekly club runs, community engagement, and annual gatherings; while also continuing the mission of the club leadership - to bring the joy of running to as many people in the greater Harrisburg area as we can. We hope to partner with other local area running clubs for group runs, have some more themed club runs (including a Blue Moon run stay tuned ), and continue to cultivate relationships with local business to make your overall running and fitness experience as full and fun as possible. Thank you to our former, on-going, and new board members and volunteers. I am sincerely humbled and honored to have served, and continue to serve, with you. I can t wait to see the many miles and smiles that 2016 will bring! HARRC ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET Join us for the Annual HARRC Banquet on March 19, 2016 at 6:30pm at the West Shore Elks Club! In addition to dinner, we ll hear from guest speaker, Dr. Matt Silvas (a doctor of sports medicine for Penn State Hershey Med), have door prizes, and hand out our annual awards (both serious awards and our fun HARRCies ). Additional details, including menu choices and ticket prices, will be posted online and sent via email in the next week. Register: www.capareagirlsontherun.org

Supporting More Running Space! The City of Harrisburg has requested funds from PENNDOT S Transportation Alternative Program (TAP), in order to support projects including improvements for our beloved Greenbelt. Former HARRC President Brad Colwell sent a letter to PENNDOT on behalf of HARRC, highlighting benefits of the proposed improvements. On January 5, he received a response, thanking us for the note of support! Fingers Crossed the Funds are Approved! 6th Annual Capital 10 Miler April 2, 2016 Register: www.capital10-miler.com Did you know? HARRC is more than just weekly club runs. Each year HARRC provides support to local community organizations like the East Shore YMCA, the Area M Special Olympics, and the Healthy Kids Running Series (just to name a few)!

HARRC and PennLive Salute Brad Colwell!! On January 17, 2016 PennLive featured an article by Kelly Leighton regarding Brad Colwell s term as HARRC president. Colwell, who has been a club member for 31 years, decided it was time to pay back the club when he stepped up to the president position in 2011. The article goes on to highlight the many improvements that Brad initiated, with the support of other officers and the HARRC board, during the past 5 years. Notable challenges that were approached included website redesign and drives to increase membership. The success of Brad s management has greatly increased the reach of HARRC to the running community. In addition to the five years of solid, business savvy leadership, we are also grateful to Brad for founding and directing the HARRC After Dark 7k, and 26 years of contribution and friendship within the HARRC Community. The article quotes Brad as saying "The greatest benefit to leading this organization was that most of the members and volunteers are extremely dedicated, energetic and enthusiastic people and it has been a pleasure to work, run and socialize with them. I will still be doing much of that." Check out Kelly Leighton s article at www.pennlive.com! Also, see the lineup of new officers and board members on the back cover of this newsletter. You may be terrified of being your disgusting runner self in front of other people, of wearing running tights in public, or of losing the few moments of precious alone time that you have managed to steal back. You may be faster than Meb, and don t want to be slowed down, or slower than molasses, and don t want to be breathlessly struggling to keep up. Be comfortable and rest assured in a simple truth: We are all the same. We all have reasons to run. We all have our own pace. We all still value our solo runs. Running in pack reminds us that we are not alone in the human experience, in our joys and pains, or in the middle of that long run that never seems to fit into your schedule. Come run with HARRC; be a part of the Wolf Pack!
