END OF THE (VERY BRIEF) ROAD: The Chicago Cubs, winners of six of their last seven games, today complete a three-game set against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park after taking the first two games by scores of 7-2 and 7-1 last night, Jake Arrieta improved to 6-0 as he spun 7.0 shutout innings and drove in a run while Kris Bryant was 3-for-5 with a run and a RBI Anthony Rizzo had two doubles for the second-straight game, driving in a run and scoring a run. The Cubs have gone 21-3 in their last 24 regular season road games dating to the nightcap of a doubleheader in Pittsburgh on September 15 of last season Chicago has outscored their opponents 147-56 during this stretch, a run differential of +91. Chicago is the first big league team to win 21 of 24 regular season road games since the 2013 Los Angeles Dodgers, who also won 22 of 25 during that run thanks to STATS Inc. EARLY RETURNS: At 19-6, the Cubs are off to their best start through 25 games in 109 years since the team was 21-4 to start the 1907 campaign (22-4 through 26 games). Including this three-game set, the Cubs have won seven of nine series this season, and their first five road series of a season for the first time since winning their first six in 1995 Monday night s victory gave Chicago wins in eight of nine series openers this year. NO SUCH STREAKS: Chicago has yet to lose consecutive games this season according to Elias, it s the deepest the Cubs have gone in a season without losing consecutive games since 1907 that team did not suffer consecutive setbacks until its 34th and 35th games of the season, May 26-27. The last club to avoid losing consecutive games longer than the Cubs to begin a season was the 1999 Atlanta Braves, who first suffered consecutive losses in the 30th and 31st games of that season thanks to STATS Inc. CURRENT EVENTS: These three contests in Pittsburgh represent the lone road games in a stretch that has Chicago playing 14 of 17 games at Wrigley Field from April 26-May 15 the Cubs tomorrow begin a 10-game homestand against the Washington Nationals (4 games), San Diego Padres (3 games, starting Monday) and the Pirates (3 games, beginning May 13). 6-0: Jake Arrieta last night improved to 6-0 in six starts this season, becoming the first Cub to win his first six starts to a season since 1908, when Mordecai Brown won each of his first 11 starts to begin the campaign thanks to Ed Hartig. STATS Inc. notes that the previous N.L. pitchers to win each of their first six starts to the season are Ubaldo Jimenez in 2010 for the Rockies and Lance Lynn, who did so in 2012 for the Cardinals.
