University of Northern Colorado 2003 Women s Volleyball Game Notes For Immediate Release - November 3, 2003 This Week s Matches University of Northern Colorado Bears (27-2) vs. Utah Valley State Wolverines (6-10) November 7, 2003 Butler-Hancock Hall (4,500) - Greeley, Colo. About UNC: The University of Northern Colorado volleyball team will conclude the home portion of its 2003 schedule on Friday night when the team hosts Utah Valley State for Senior & Parents Night at Butler-Hancock Hall. The match will be the last home contest for seniors Linnea Kiilsgaard, Kristi Krom and Cara Miller. Each will be honored in a ceremony prior to the match. The Bears are in the midst of a school record 21 match winning streak and have also won 20 in a row in Butler-Hancock Hall, streaks that will be tough for Utah Valley State to break. The Bears have also won 64 of their last 67 sets overall, and 20 sets in a row at home. The Wolverines are in the midst of making the transition from junior college to NCAA Division I this season. The two teams squared off earlier this year in Orem, with UNC winning by a 3-0 margin on Utah Valley s home court. While UNC has played a primarily Division II schedule this season, UVSC has played a mix of schools including nine Division I teams, and have claimed wins over Boise State and Washington State. Friday night s meeting will not be the last between the squads this season, as the two will hook up at the Division I Independent Tournament being held in Fort Wayne, Ind. on Nov. 14 and 15. UNC will also square off against IP- Fort Wayne, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Texas-Pan American at the event. UNC tied a school record on Saturday night, when they won by sweep for the 23rd time this season, equalling the mark set by each the 1993 and 1994 volleyball squads. UNC equalled that mark in only 29 matches, an impressive feat. Kiilsgaard continues to approach the school record for assists, as she now needs only 206 to tie the all-time record that has stood since the end of the 1991 season. Junior outside hitter Maggie Ledall is also approaching a record, as her.413 hitting percentage would rank No. 1 all-time in a single season at UNC, if the season ended today. She is almost a lock to break the old record of.339 set by Kelly Pappenheim in 1987. Ledall has hit over. 700 in each of her last two matches. 206 Assists needed by senior All-American setter Linnea Kiilsgaard to tie the UNC career record for assists. coaching comparisons Ron Alexander (Northern Colorado, 88) Overall (2 yrs.) 58-5 (.921) Utah Valley State Sam Atoa At UVSC (5 yrs.) 144-41 (.778) Overall (5 yrs.) same unc notes Bears Have Shot at Best Two-Year Stretch in School History: Over the past two seasons, UNC has compiled a 58-5 record for a.921 winning percentage. Currently, the best two-year stretch in school history is a.871 winning percentage over the 1994 and 1995 seasons. UNC needs only to win two more matches to guarantee themselves that record. Tough at Home: UNC has been tough at Butler-Hancock Hall, posting a 250-48 (.839) record since the program began in 1976. The Bears have won 20 consecutive matches at home dating back to the 2001 season, when they last lost to North Dakota State, 3-1 on Nov. 2. Last year, UNC was 12-0 at home and posted four of its five largest crowds in the building s history. This year UNC is 7-0. UNC is 39-3 at home since the beginning of the 1999 season (the 2000 season was played at the Student Rec Center and not included in those totals). How Sweep It Is: UNC is just not winning matches this season, they are sweeping them at a record pace. Through 29 matches this season, UNC has 27 wins, 23 of them by 3-0 sweeps. The sweep over Mesa State on Nov. 1 equalled the school record for sweeps in a season, also held by both the 1993 and 1994 squads. Those teams had more matches to set the record though, as the 1993 squad played 41 total matches and the 1994 squad played 36 total matches on the season. about the opponents The Series: UNC leads Utah Valley State 1-0 all-time. The teams met earlier this season in Orem, with UNC winning 3-0 by scores of 30-21, 30-20 and 30-21. The Last Time We Met: UNC won 3-0 on Oct. 3 in Orem. That was UNC s 11th victory in a row at the time, a streak UNC has extended to 21 entering this week. Terin Ledall led the way for UNC with 16 kills while Amanda Wiggins added 13 kills and 12 digs. Utah Valley State: In making the transition from junior college to Division I, the Wolverines have not played as many matches as they may have liked to have. At this point in the season, UVSC has only played in 16 contests. Utah Valley was a winner last time out against NAIA Westminster, but prior to that lost to DI Utah State. They also defeated Division II South Dakota State 3-1 in Brookings earlier this season and have topped two Division I teams in Washington State and Boise State. Miller Blocks Her Way Into UNC Record Book: By recording six block assists on Oct. 28 against Metro State, Cara Miller moved to 248 block assists for her career, which tied her for fifth place on the UNC career list with Cyndy Wirth, who also had 248 block assists from 1984-86. Miller has since passed Wirth and now has 252 block assists for her career. Bears Set School Record for Consecutive Game Wins: The Bears saw their winning streak of 40 consecutive games come to an end on Oct. 11 against Truman State. The 40 consecutive set victories broke a 17-year old school record (previously 38); the record setting win came against Pitt State on Oct. 11 and was extended to 40 in game one against Truman before the Bulldogs eventually snapped it. Ironically, the streak had began back on Sept. 6 agianst Truman State in a match at the Premier Challenge. Although no Division II record for consecutive game victories is on record, the Bears 40 game streak would rank 11th all-time in Division I, with Long Beach State holding the all-time record (69 games in a row). Since the beginning of September, UNC has won 63 of the 66 games they have played in. UNC Sets School Record for Consecutive Matches Won: With a win over Lees- McRae on Oct. 18, UNC broke an 18-year old school record for consecutive matches won, with their 18th straight victory. The record broke the previous mark set by both the 1986 and 1987 Bears squads. With their 3-0 victory over Mesa State on Saturday, the Bears have now won 21 matches in a row. Krom Named Division I Independent Defensive Player of the Week: Senior libero Kristi Krom was named Division I Independent Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 21 after averaging 5.29 digs in UNC s four victories at the Edinboro Invitational. Krom recorded 25 digs in a victory over Edinboro, the third highest dig total of her career. Alexander Wins 50th Match as UNC Coach: October 11 s 3-0 victory over Pittsburg State was Ron Alexander s 50th win as a collegiate head coach. The remarkable feat is that Alexander earned his 50th win in only 55 total matches as the Bears head coach, numbers that are tough to beat at any level of coaching for any sport. Alexander currently holds a 58-5 record in two seasons. Kiilsgaard Among Finest Setters in NCAA History: If the season ended today, senior All-American setter Linnea Kiilsgaard would average 13.48 assists for her career (5,068 assists in 376 games). That 13.48 average would rank No. 2 all-time in NCAA Division II history and would top the previous record holder Jennifer Dress of Metro State, who averaged 12.81 assists per game for her career (in 258 games). But Linnea is still duking it out with North Alabama senior Ashley Moffitt, who is currently averaging 13.69 assists/game (6432 assists in 470 games through Saturday) and also still playing this season. 2003 UNC Volleyball Game Notes 3

Road Warriors: Not only is UNC perfect at home this season, they have also dominated their opponents on its home court, claiming a perfect 8-0 record this season at away sites. The Bears have defeated Hawaii-Hilo, Regis, West Chester, Metro State, Westminster, Utah Valley State, Truman State and Edinboro all on the road. Dating back to last season, the Bears have won 15 consecutive matches on the road. That is the longest road streak in school history, topping a pair of 11 match strings, set during the 1979 and 1980 seasons. Ace of a Server: At the West Chester Ram Fest, North Carolina Central did not have much of an answer for junior Danelle Angus serve. At one point in the match, Angus served 14 straight points (one away from tying the NCAA record) for the Bears and ended the match with nine total aces, the second highest total in UNC history. Angus equalled that second feat by serving nine aces against Christian Brothers on Oct. 10 at the Truman State Classic. The record for aces in a match is currently 10, done by Dana Cash against Minnesota State on Oct. 3, 1992. Angus currently leads UNC with 63 total aces, an average of 0.66/game. The UNC single season ace record is 94 currently held by Mary Vetter (1984). Angus had a career match against Truman State on Oct. 11. She had a career-high 18 kills and tied a career-high with seven total blocks. Big Blocking: The Bears blockers came to life on Oct. 17 against Edinboro and the team recorded 20.5 blocks on the night. That almost doubled the previous high output of the season, which was 11 on two ocassions. Kiilsgaard Poised to Set School Assists Record: All-American senior setter Linnea Kiilsgaard has been a model of consistency in the UNC offensive attack her entire career. She needs only 209 assists to become the program s all-time leader in that category and to unseat the current leader, Michelle White (5,296 from 1988-91). Kiilsgaard recorded 1,604 assists her freshman year before suffering an injury her sophomore year and registering only 506. But she bounced back a year ago with 1,651 assists and has 1,307 through 96 games this year. She currently ranks second on the UNC career list and will need to average 41.8 assists per match (five left) the rest of the season to break the record. Ledall Blistering the Nets: Junior Maggie Ledall is hitting the ball with unbelievable accuracy this season. The junior ranks 10th in the country in hitting percentage and if the season ended today, her.413 (277k-64e-516a) hitting percentage would break the alltime school for a season currently held by Kelley Pappenheim (.339 in 1987). In her last 15 matches, she has hit at least.300 in 12 of those contests and overall for the year she has hit at least.300 in 22 of her 29 matches. Twelve times this season she has hit.500 or better for a match including twice last week when she hit over.700 against Western State and Mesa State. The Other Ledall Knocking Them Down: While Maggie Ledall is hitting for a high percentage, her sister Terin is consistently recording double figure kills. Terin has recorded at least 10 kills in a match in 26 of UNC s 29 matches this year with the only exceptions being the first match of the season against Briar Cliff, the blowout victory over North Carolina Central on Sept. 13 and against Lees-McRae. Terin currently leads the team with a 3.85 kills/game average. Terin recorded a career-high 22 kills against Northern Kentucky and followed that up with a career-high 20 digs against Edinboro later that day (Oct. 17). NCAA Statistics Leaders: In the latest set of NCAA statistics 2003 trends The Bears are... 27-2 Overall. 7-0 At Home. 8-0 At Away matches. 12-2 At Neutral sites. 5-0 In their last five matches. 10-0 In their last 10 matches. 23-0 In three-game matches. 3-0 In four-game matches. 1-2 In five-game matches. 24-1 When up 1-0. 23-1 When up 2-0. 4-1 When up 2-1. 4-0 When tied 1-1. 1-2 When tied 2-2. 2-1 When down 0-1. 0-1 When down 0-2. 14-1 When hitting over.300. 8-0 When hitting between.250-.299. 4-1 When hitting between.200-.249. 1-0 When hitting below.200. 26-2 When out-hitting their opponents. 27-1 When out-assisting their opponents. 25-1 When out-digging their opponents. 10-1 When out-blocking their opponents. 19-1 When recording more aces than opponent. 0-0 On Monday. 4-0 On Tuesday. 1-0 On Wednesday. 1-0 On Thursday. 10-1 On Friday 11-1 On Saturday. 0-0 On Sunday. 3-1 In August. 12-1 In September. 11-0 In October. 1-0 In November. 2003 Double-Doubles Linnea Kiilsgaard... 16 Terin Ledall... 15 Amanda Wiggins... 15 2003 UNC Volleyball Game Notes 4

released on Oct. 29 (for games through Oct. 26), three Bears rank among national leaders and the team ranks in the top 10 in four categories. Senior Linnea Kiilsgaard ranks sixth in assists/game (13.52). Last year, Kiilsgaard led the country in assists during the regular season and finished fourth after the postseason was calculated. Junior Maggie Ledall ranks 15th in hitting percentage (.394) while senior Cara Miller is 22nd (.392). As a team, UNC ranks fifth in assists/game (15.59), fifth in kills/game (17.07), 11th in hitting percentage (.295) and sixth in winning percentage. During UNC s four-year reclassification process to Division I, the team s stats will count as Division II and will not be counted as Division I until their first full-year in 2007-08. The next Division II national statistics will be released on Oct. 29. UNC Among Independent Statistical Leaders: Although UNC is not in a conference this season, they are still being compared with other teams across the country in the Division I Independent Statistics (including UNC, Texas-Pan American, IP-Fort Wayne, Providence, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Utah Valley State, UC-Davis and Savannah State). In the latest set of Independent Volleyball Statistics released on Oct. 27. UNC ranks high in most every category. As a team, the Bears lead the kills, assists, hitting percentage and service aces category and are second in digs (behind UC-Davis) and second in blocks (behind Utah Valley). Individually, Maggie Ledall and Cara Miller rank No. 1 and No. 2 in hitting percentage, Linnea Kiilsgaard leads assists and Danelle Angus is the leader in service aces while Kiilsgaard ranks second. In total, UNC has two players in the top 10 in kills, three in the top 10 in hitting percentage and four in the top 10 of digs. Dig-4-Life: For the second year in a row, UNC will once again be sponsoring the Dig-4-Life campaign in October. Dig-4-Life helps raise money for the American Cancer Society for every dig that UNC accumulates during its two home matches in October (Oct. 28 and Oct. 31). The money raised via donations (either per dig or in a lump sum) help the ACS fund research and education efforts, as October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Last year, the Bears totalled 149 digs in two matches and raised over $1,000. This year UNC had 109 digs in two matches. For more information or to make your donation, please contact Director of Marketing & Promotions, Larry Aschebrook at (970) 351-1665. Half a Grand Club: UNC has cracked the AVCA s Half a Grand Club (which honors schools with 500 or more fans at a match) in three of its five home matches this season. Against North Dakota State (Sept. 3) UNC drew 520 fans, on Sept. 20 versus Nebraska- Kearney the Bears drew a season-high 605 fans and against Metro State on Oct. 28, 501 fans saw the Bears sweep to victory. The Higher They Are Ranked, The Harder They Fall: UNC does not back down from playing a tough schedule. This season they have already faced nine Top 25 opponents, and own a 7-2 record in those contests, including wins over No. 10 North Dakota State, No. 3 Truman State, No. 5 Metro State No. 12 Nebraska-Kearney, No. 15 Pitt State, No. 7 Truman State and No.2 Metro State. Last season, UNC was 14-3 against ranked opponents. Overall, the Bears are 16-3 in their last 19 matches against Top 25 opposition. Ledall and Team Set Hitting Records: UNC hit for some pretty high percentages at the West Chester Tournament, so good they broke two school records. Against Shippensburg (Sept. 12), junior Maggie Ledall was 12k-0e-14a from the floor for a hitting percentage of.857 which set the school record for an individual hitting percentage in a match with at least 10 kills. Ledall broke the 15 yearold record of Stacey DeJong, who hit.850 (11-0-13) against Denver on Oct. 19, 1988. The next day against North Carolina Central (Sept. 13), UNC did it as a team hitting.568 (46k-4e-74a) to shatter the school record for hitting percentage in a match which was previously.494 set by the 2001 team against Colorado Mines on Sept. 12. Defense Limits West Chester: In game two of the match against West Chester (Sept. 13), the Bears defense was able to limit the Rams considerably. West Chester managed only seven points in the game, the lowest UNC had held an opponent to since collegiate volleyball switched to rally scoring at the beginning of the 2001 season. Previously UNC had held Texas A&M-Kingsville to eight points (Aug. 25, 2001), Colorado Christian to nine points (Sept. 17, 2002) and North Carolina Central to nine points twice (earlier in the day on Sept. 13, 2002) in the only other instances an opponent failed to score 10 points in an individual game. Bears No Longer Ranked AVCA Poll: UNC started the 2003 season being ranked in the AVCA Division II poll, because the AVCA considered the Bears a DII team because of their primarily DII schedule. UNC was ranked 16th in the preseason and kept falling each week because not all the coaches were voting for the Bears. UNC no longer media quick facts City:... UNC will be considered a Division I team next season by the AVCA when they play a Division I schedule. 1000 Digs: By recording nine digs in a match against West Chester (Sept. 13), senior All- American setter Linnea Kiilsgaard surpassed the 1,000 dig plateau for her outstanding four-year career. She became the 16th member of the UNC 1,000 dig club and should finish this season somewhere in the top 10 in Bear history. Kiilsgaard and Miller Named to Premier Challenge All-Tournament Team: After leading UNC to a 3-1 record and third place finish at the 2003 Premier Challenge, senior All- American setter Linnea Kiilsgaard and senior middle blocker Cara Miller were named to the All-Tournament team for their accomplishments. Kiilsgaard, who was also named to the All-Tournament team at the Hawaiian Style Classic, averaged 12.36 assists and 2.71 digs per game in UNC s four matches. Miller averaged 2.43 kills and 1.00 blocks per game while hitting a team-high.324. The Bears defeated St. Edward s and Regis in 2003 UNC Volleyball Game Notes 5

Pool III play before falling to No. 4 Cal State-San Bernardino in the semifinals of the Gold Bracket finale. UNC redeemed itself in the third-place match by sweeping No. 3 Truman State 3-0. Bears Tie NCAA Record: Sept. 3rd s wild match against North Dakota State will go down in the NCAA recordbook. The Bears defeated the Bison 3-1 by scores of 41-39, 29-31, 30-17 and 30-28 to tie one NCAA Division II record and come within one point of another (the Bears stats will count as Div. II until the end of their four-year reclassification process to Div. I). The 130 total points the Bears scored that night tied the record set by Western Oregon against St. Martin s on Nov. 3, 2001. The 41 points in game one was one off the mark currently held by Indianapolis (vs. Wheeling Jesuit on Oct. 11, 2002) and St. Martin s (vs. Western Oregon on Nov. 3, 2001). It Doesn t Happen Often: UNC led No. 4 CS-San Bernardino 2-0 at the Premier Challenge on Sept. 6 before eventually falling by a 3-2 score (30-27, 30-15, 27-30, 30-32, 11-15). A look back through the UNC volleyball records notes that had not happened since Sept. 19, 1997 when UNC led Minnesota State, Mankato 2-0 before eventually falling 15-13, 15-4, 8-15, 3-15, 11-15. That was a stretch of 191 matches between times that the Bears blew a 2-0 lead. A Sister Thing: This year s team features the seventh pair of sisters to play volleyball together at UNC. Maggie and Terin Ledall are the first set of sisters to play together at UNC since Meg and Vicki Pruett back in the 1989 and 1990 seasons. Maggie is a junior this season while Terin is in her first year with the Bears. The sisters had their first big match together against Hawaii Pacific (8/29) when they combined for 32 total kills and 16 digs. A Sophomore Rising: Last season, sophomore Amanda Wiggins was fighting for playing time behind a pair of All-American outside hitters. With one of those outside hitters graduated and the other sitting out with an injury this season, Wiggins has responded well early in the 2003 season. The Monument, Colo. native is averaging 3.61 kills/game average so far this season and recorded a career-high 23 kills in UNC s 3-1 victory over North Dakota State on Sept. 3. Aloha: UNC opened the 2003 season by taking a trip to the beautiful islands of Hawaii to play at the 10th Annual Hawaiian Style Classic hosted by Hawaii-Hilo. UNC claimed victories at the event over Briar Cliff, Hilo and Seattle University and lost a match to No. 22 Hawaii Pacific. The trip was the first ever for the program to Hawaii for a early season tournament. Hawaiian Style All-Tournament Team: Senior All-American setter Linnea Kiilsgaard and junior outside hitter Maggie Ledall were named to the All-Tournament team at the Hawaiian Style Classic after helping lead UNC to a 3-1 record at the event. Ledall averaged 3.0 kills/game while Kiilsgaard averaged 12.60 assists/game. Head of the Class: UNC head coach Ron Alexander just did not recruit talented athletes to become part of the UNC program, he recruited all-around great student-athletes. This year s eight newcomers feature four players who were valedictorians of their senior class a year ago. Kelli Benham, Jenny Evans, Jill Peotter and Dulcie Stone all finished at the top of their class academically. Last year, the Bears had 12 student-athletes who were named UNC Scholar Athletes. Bears Make Move to Division I: On May 10, 2002 the UNC Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve a move for the UNC intercollegiate athletics program to NCAA Division I. The 2002-03 sports year marked the last season for the Bears in the North Central Conference and the NCAA Division II level. This season the Bears begin a four-year reclassification period before officially becoming a Division I school in 2007. Over the next four years, UNC will be unable to compete in NCAA postseason competition. UNC will be competiting as an independent during the 2003-04 school year and will hopefully find conference affiliation before the end of the reclassification period. 1993 Volleyball Team Inducted into UNC Athletic Hall of Fame: On Sept. 19, the 1993 UNC volleyball team became the first volleyball squad inducted in the UNC Athletic Hall of Fame. Central Region title and advanced to the NCAA Elite 8 where they finished fourth. The team set a school record with 23 shutouts during the season and legendary coach Linda Delk won her 500th career match. The team joins five volleyball individuals (Dana Cash, Lark Birdsong, Linda Delk, Kristy Jordan and Deb Ponis) as members of the Hall of Fame. Deffenbaugh to Miss 2003 Season: Erin Deffenbaugh, the AVCA 2002 Division II National Player of the Year, will miss the entire 2003 season after suffering an injury in the summer. Deffenbaugh, who would have been a senior this year, will set out the year and conclude her career in 2004. She is the program s record holder for kills in a match (39), season (743) and career (1,908) and led all of Division II with 6.14 kills per game last season on her way to becoming the first UNC volleyball player to earn National Player of the Year honors. When she returns, she will need only 769 kills to become the Division II all-time career leader in that category. Krom s Online Season Diary: Beginning after the Bears get back from Hawaii, senior libero Kristi Krom will share her thoughts and experiences about the season for all UNC fans to read at UNCBears.com. Krom s bi-weekly journals entries will be a feature all season long as the Bears strive to post the best two-year record in school history. UNC Coaches Show: Catch Ron Alexander and all the fall sports coaches on the UNC Coaches Radio Show every Tuesday night at 6 p.m. The show is broadcast live from Barleycorn s (2385 W. 27th Street) and airs on KCOL 600-AM.
