The First Tee Of Sarasota Manatee SUMMARY Mission The First Tee of Sarasota/Manatee Mission is to impact the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf. Our program is open to all students in Sarasota and Manatee counties ages 4-18, regardless of their ability to pay, their fitness level, or their gender. BACKGROUND & NEEDS Impact Statement Needs Statement 1.) Website Upgrade: All of The First Tee chapters use Blackbaud. Yearly website cost $750.00 2.) School Program Equipment: We operate an in-school program that introduces the school children to the game of golf and the First Tee s life skill program. We provide this to the schools at no cost to the school or the district. Each school we add to this program costs us $3,250. It does however serve the school children for many years to come. Some schools have the ability to raise money to help offset this cost but sadly most do not. Can you help? 3.) Logo Gear: We would like to provide our participants with rewards for their accomplishments like shirts and hats. In recent years this has been beyond our means. A gift of $500.00 or more will get us started. 4.) Volunteers: We appreciate the help we get from volunteers and we can use more. Each volunteer goes through a background check and training that costs our chapter $100 per person. We are also looking for a part time Volunteer Cordinator. 5.) Marketing: We need help from one or more marketing pros. We need to purchase marketing gear. We would like to do public service announcements, videos, print advertising, Tear Drop Flags with our Nine Core Values & yard signs. Your $3500.00 gift would go along way to help us out. Background Statement The First Tee is more than a sports program for youth. At The First Tee, we believe all young people should have access to safe places and caring adults who help them grow socially, emotionally and academically. While teaching the fundamentals of a golf swing, our character education programs provide a fun, active environment for young people on the course, in schools and at youth center. Since its inception in 1997, The First Tee, a 501(c)(3), has grown its network to deliver programs in all 50 United Sates and select international locations. In 2016, The First Tee brought character education through the game of golf to more than 5.3 million young people. The First Tee's Founding Partners are the LPGA, the Masters Tournament, PGA of America, PGA Tour and the USGA. Shell Oil Company is The First Tee's Founding Corporate Partner, Johnson & Johnson its Legacy Partner and Southern Company its Education Patron. President George W. Bush serves as Honorary Chair. Statement from the Board Chair I was asked in 2006 to come to a fund raising event for The First Tee. I heard an eighteen year old at that time come up and speak in front of a crowd of hundreds of people. Her personal journey was touching. She was disrespectful, not doing well in school and was about to be another statistic. The First Tee through its programming and teaching got her on track and focused to where she received multiple scholarships to college. Afterwards I was introduced to her father and was able to speak to him about his daughter s transformation. All choked up he could not say enough about how it had transformed his daughter into a respectful caring young woman. Raising five children here in Sarasota I wanted to make sure that my kids did not fall into the traps and black holes that exist for children today. One in four children drop out of school, childhood obesity is on the rise and one in three children say they lack adult role models. I grew up in Sarasota, specifically at Forest Lakes Country Club Hole #5. Forest Lakes was very kid friendly back then, and after hours, we had the opportunity to go and play the course or practice, as long as we took care of the course as if it were our own, and kept an eye on other players coming up from behind. Sarasota had numerous courses that your parents could go and drop you off without needing to be watched. Local professionals would encourage younger players to play or practice at the facilities, knowing that in the end, they would eventually become new customers. w many courses have turned private and the gates have shut. Club members and owners do not have the open doors now that I experienced. Over the years I have seen many of the courses I played close up. Forest Lakes, Foxfire and Sunrise just to name a few. These public courses allowed kids the opportunity to come practice and play without feeling like an outcast. The rules and values are part of what I have learned playing golf growing up and is exactly what The First Tee teaches. Our Nine Core Values; 3

Honesty, Integrity, Perseverance, Respect, Sportsmanship, Confidence, Judgment, Courtesy and Responsibility is the cornerstone to our mission. That mission is to impact the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf. A few years ago The First Tee incorporated The Nine Healthy Habits. This was a collaboration among The First Tee, ANNIKA Foundation and Florida Hospital for Children to promote healthy, active lifestyles for young people. Today our Chapter reaches out to children in elementary and middle school, whether they are public or private, through our National School Program. This is a way to get our message out to young people and introduce them to the game of golf. Part of the challenge in raising money for our Chapter is the misconception that we teach golf. We introduce the game of golf and teach the Nine Core Values through the game. There are numerous non-profit s here locally, and every one of them has a challenge to raise money. Statement from the CEO/Executive Director Areas Served FL- Sarasota FL- Manatee The First Tee of Sarasota Manatee serves all towns, cities, neighborhoods, schools, churches within the Manatee and Sarasota County. PROGRAMS Golf and Life Skills 9 week session (4 seperate) Description The First Tee's programs are designed around teaching young people the game of golf, as well as helping them understand and ultimately develop The First Tee Nine Core Values (TM): honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgment. The First Tee curriculum was developed by experts in the field of positvie youth development through sport and it delivered by caring adults (coaches) who have been trained by The First Tee. At The First Tee, golf and life lessons are seamlessly incorporated into each experience. In addition to learning fundamentals of the golf swing and the game, a sample of life skills lessons include: A) Interpersonal Skills: proper introduction when meeting someone new and how to effectively communicate with others. B) Self-Management: Techniques for managing thoughts and emotions. C) Goal-Setting: Setting attainable goals to reach desired dreams. D) Resiliency Skills: Strategies to adapt, to manage and overcome challenges. Budget $0.00 Category Program Linked to Organizational Strategy Population Served Youth Development, General/Other Youth Development, General/Other K-12 (5-19 years) Short Term Success On the first day of class at The First Tee of Sarasota Manatee you learn to introduce yourself, look the person in the eyes and ask an open ended questions. They learn when they enter into a building that gentlemen remove their hats and hold the doors for others. By the end of their first 9 week session they are confident and proud and now how to present them self as a well established person. Long Term Success Program Success Monitoring Independent research confirms The First Tee's ability to instill life skills and core values in youth participating programs delivered through its chapters. Highlights from the study include: A) School was unanimously identified as a setting in which participants transferred life skills. B) 73% reported high confidence in their ability to do well academically. C) 82% felt confident in their social skills with peers. D) 78% described their ability to transfer life skills through specific examples and stories E) 57% credited The First Tee for their meeting and greeting skills F) 52 % credited the program for their ability to appreciate diversity. The First Tee participants were compared to youth in after-school activities without a life skills curriculum. The First Tee youth scored higher than the comparison group on use of general life skills including goalsetting, taking initiative and managing their emotions, as well as on most measures of transferring life skills and demonstrating positive character traits. 5

Program Success Examples Transferring Skills From The Course To Life: Youth credited The First Tee for their ability to transfer many of the life skills they learned in golf to school and other areas of their lives. Managing emotions, setting goals and resolving conflicts were skills The First Tee participants continued to transfer by, for example, staying positive when frustrated with homework, setting goals to get better grades and looking for solutions to problems with friends. 57% of youth surveyed across three years credited The First Tee for their meeting and greeting skills, and 52% credited the program for their ability to appreciate diversity. LPGA/USGA Girls Golf of Sarasota Manatee Description LPGA-USGA Girls Golf, a developmental junior golf program for girls ages 5-17, was formed to create a network for girls to learn to play golf, build friendships and sample competition in a positive and supportive learning environment. Budget $3,000.00 Category Program Linked to Organizational Strategy Population Served Short Term Success Long Term Success Program Success Monitoring Program Success Examples Youth Development, General/Other Females This will be our 4th year having a girls only golf camp during the summer months. We have 2 weeks, Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 5:00pm. They learn the game of golf, swim, 1 hour p/day of fitness, arts and crafts. Every year we have girls that attend the 1st week signup again for the 2nd. On average, more than 40 percent of girls drop out of sports by the age of 14 years old. Participating in sports is crucial for helping girls develop positive self-esteem and confidence. Research has found that girls reap the biggest rewards when learning in all-girl environments allowing them to feel more comfortable learning the game in a setting where they are free to be themselves.lpga-usga Girls Golf has also developed a curriculum that utilizes proven success strategies for attracting and retaining girls in the game of golf by incorporating fun and engaging instruction and social activities both on and off the golf course. The end of each week we have a survey handed out to parents to fill out. We do a good, better, how. Every summer we have more girls signing up. 6
