Season Outlook

Season Outlook 06 Fall Review / 07 Spring Preview The loss of last year s lone senior Maria Martinez turned Auburn s fall season into a quest for new leadership and a new identity. Through five tournaments Auburn has found exactly those things. Nicole Hage stepped up to provide leadership, while freshman Candace Schepperle and sophomore Marisa Milligan both helped to fill the final spot in the team s lineup. Seven different golfers will likely find their way into the Auburn lineup this season. Led by seniors Hage and Jessica Lovell, a strong group of underclassmen will take to the links with all eyes focused on a potential three-peat at the SEC Championships and the school s 13th trip to the NCAA Championships. Juniors Margaret Shirley and Abigale Schepperle, sophomores Marisa Milligan and Mariana Macias, and freshman Candace Schepperle will look to continue their strong play heading into the spring schedule. We have a large group of very good players this season, Auburn head coach Kim Evans said. There figures to be plenty of competition during the week and some very good golf played on the weekends. Auburn opened the season as the 4th-ranked team in the nation, and got the chance to justify that ranking Sept.. 22-24 at the NCAA Fall Preview, a collection of the nation s top teams at the same course in Daytona Beach, Fla., that will host the 2007 NCAA Championships. The Tigers earned a finish equal to their ranking on the strength of a 4-over 220 from Lovell. The second stop on the fall schedule was Chapel Hill, N.C. for the Lady Tar Heel Invitational Oct. 6-8. Candace Schepperle turned out to be the highlight of the team s weekend, battling cold, wet and windy weather to finish tied for 11th place in individual play. The following week at the UT Mercedes-Benz Women s Collegiate, Auburn fell two strokes short of a playoff with and finished third. All five Tigers finished in the top 25, and Nicole Hage placed in a tie for ninth after shooting a 71-72-77--220. Marisa Milligan played her first collegiate tournament as an individual and finished tied for 55th. Auburn s last standard scoring tournament of the fall was their own. The 2006 Derby Invitational brought five top 50 teams to Auburn as part of a 17 team field. The Tigers came away victorious for the fourth time in the tournaments history with an impressive final-round 291. Marisa Milligan won the tournament as an individual and earned a spot in the starting lineup the following week. Nicole Hage continued her outstanding play, finishing in a tie for second. The cap to the fall schedule was the Hooters Collegiate Match Play in Orlando, Fla. Auburn had three golfers post 3-1 match records on their way to wins over Alabama, Florida State and LSU. A second round loss to Michigan State put the Tigers in the consolation round, where they won two matches in convincing fashion to finish in fifth place as a team. We improved as a team throughout the fall, Evans said. I eagerly anticipate what the spring will bring for this team. We are excited to get back in competition and pursue more post-season honors. Auburn finished the fall with a 298.63 stroke average, a Derby Invitational crown and four more top-ten finishes. They will have four opportunities to improve on those numbers before postseason play begins in late April. Auburn opens the spring on foreign soil, competing at the Lady Puerto Rico Feb. 23-25 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Tigers won the event in the spring of 2005 and finished fourth in 04. Moving a little closer to home, Auburn visits Baton Rouge for the LSU Cleveland Golf Classic March 16-18. It will be the 11th trip to the home course of the Bayou Bengals in school history. The Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, March 23-25 in Athens, Ga., is the Tiger s third tournament of the spring. A remodeled UGA Golf Course will be a new challenge for the Tigers, despite it being their 20th trip north on Interstate 85 for the tournament. The final tune-up for postseason play is a trip to Brown Summit, N.C. for the Bryan National Collegiate. Auburn will look to improve their play there, as a fourth and fifth place finish were the results of their first two trips in 04 and 05. The SEC Tournament is slated for April 20-22 in West Point, Miss. Traditionally one of the most competitive conference tournaments, the SEC Championships has a penchant for Sunday drama. Auburn won the tournament in 2005 with two birdie putts on the 18th hole. NCAA Regionals are scheduled for May 10-12. Last year, Auburn s 12th appearance in the East Regional resulted in a sixth place finish and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Auburn hopes it season will end right where it began, at the NCAA Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla. 12th place was Auburn s finish last year, and a second shot at the LPGA International s Champions Course could bring historic results for the Tigers. www.auburntigers.com

www.auburntigers.com Head Coach Kim Evans Coaching Staff Auburn Graduate - Class of 1981 13th season (1685-504-22) 2002 NGCA National Coach of the Year Five SEC Championships ( 96, 00, 03, 05, 06) Five NCAA Top 10 Finishes ( 00-6th, 01-4th, 02-2nd, 03-9th, 05-5th) No. 1 rankings, top 10 finishes in the NCAA Championship, Auburn and Kim Evans all go hand in hand. Evans, who led the Tigers to five SEC Championships, including the 2006 title, was the 2002 NGCA National Coach of the Year as the Tigers amassed an incredible record of 162-7-3 (.951). In the fall of 2005, Golfweek named the Auburn women s program the fourth most successful program in the past five years. Evans, who is in her 13th year at Auburn, led the Tigers to eight consecutive NCAA Championship appearances, including five top-10 finishes with a tie for second in the nation in 2002, third in 2005, fourth in 2001, sixth in 2000 and ninth in 2003. Auburn s five SEC titles under Evans came in 1996, 2000, 2003, 2005 and 2006. In 2006, Evans coached the Tigers to a sixth place finish at the NCAA East Region and a 12th place finish at the NCAA Championships. Two players were named All-Americans, and Maria Martinez was named SEC Women s Golfer of the Year. The team tied a school record with five tournament victories, taking first place in the Derby Invitational, The LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic, The Lady Gamecock Classic, The SEC Championship and the Lady Buckeye Invite. In 2005 Evans led the Tigers to the NCAA Central Region title and senior Diana Ramage earned medalist honors in the tournament. Three players were named All-Americans, as well as All-SEC team members in 2005. The Tigers finished the 2002 season ranked No. 1 nationally in Golfweek and were No. 1 in the nation in Golfweek s 2002-03 preseason poll. Evans has coached and helped with the development of six All-Americans, five SEC Players of the Year and four SEC Freshmen of the Year. Auburn s streak of eight-straight NCAA appearances was the fourth longest stint of any school in the nation at that time. Since 2000, the Tigers have won 22 tournament championships. The 1981 Auburn graduate has turned a once mediocre program into a consistent National Championship contender. In 2004, freshman Nicole Hage won SEC Freshman of the Year honors and was named as the Co-SEC Player of the Year. Along with Hage, Maria Martinez earned first team All-SEC honors. Season Review Coming off one of the most successful seasons in the program s history, the 2005-06 women s golf team took to the links with loads of talent and lofty expectations. Beginning the season ranked 5th nationally, the Tigers won a school record five tournaments, successfully defended their SEC title and earned a second consecutive NCAA Tournament invitation. Auburn finished no worse than 5th in nine regular season tournaments and set school records for tournament low score and season low average. The team was led by lone senior Maria Martinez, who won four individual titles and set a school record for season low average (71.89). Her four titles were the most ever by an Auburn golfer in a single season, and she became only the fifth SEC individual champion in the program s history. Martinez won All-SEC first team and Player of the Year honors. She was one of three Tigers to make the All- SEC team. Juniors Nicole Hage and Margaret Shirley were awarded second-team honors. The SEC Tournament Championship, Auburn s sixth, didn t come easy. Martinez and Margaret Shirley both sank birdie putts on the final hole to secure the victory at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Nashville, Tenn. The Tigers took the lead after first round, carding a 300. A second round 282 gave the Tigers a comfortable lead heading into the final round, but a late charge from Tennessee forced the tournament championship to be decided on the final hole. After winning the SEC tournament, Auburn earned its 13th bid to an NCAA Regional. Playing in the East Region at the Bryan s Park Golf Club in Brown s Summit, N.C., the Tigers carded a final round 285 to finish in sixth place and earn a bid to the NCAA championships. At the NCAA Championships, Auburn finished twelfth after shooting a four-round total of 1208 to finish at 56-over par. The NCAA bid was the twelfth for the women s golf program and the twelfth place finish in 2006 was the sixth best in their twelve NCAA tournaments. Abigale Schepperle led the Tigers individually, shooting a 297 (74-71-77-75) and tied for 21st place. Maria Martinez carded a 301 (73-76-75-77) and finished in a tie for 38th, Margaret Shirley finished 68th with a 307 (77-73-78-79), Nicole Hage carded a 309 (77-82-75-75) and finished tied for 79th and Jessica Lovell shot a 315 (80-78- 80-77) to finish in a tie for 98th. The road to the NCAA Championships began eight months earlier in the Cougar Classic at the Yeaman s Hall Golf Club in Charleston, S.C. Auburn opened the season with a fourth place finish, shooting an 884 (307-285-292) that included 05-06 Season Review www.auburntigers.com a second round 285, the lowest round for any team over the three day tournament. Nicole Hage was the low-scorer for Auburn, shooting a 4-over 220 (78-70-72) to finish in a tie for 13th place. The Tigers finished fifth in the Mason Rudolph at Vanderbilt Legends Course in Nashville, Tenn. and second in the Lady Tar Heel Invitational at the Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill N.C., before earning their first tournament victory in the Derby Invitational at the Auburn University Club. Auburn (291-302-286--879) shot an final round 286 to overtake Duke and win the tournament. Maria Martinez captured her first individual title, scoring all three rounds at or under par on her way to a 7-under 209 (69-72-68). The Wildcat Invitational at Arizona National Golf Club brought the Tigers back to action after a winter break of more than three months. A three round total of 864 (288-287-289) earned Auburn a fifth place finish and a springboard into a spring season that saw them win or finish second in every regular season tournament. In the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic at the University Club in Baton Rouge, La., Auburn finished every golfer in the top 30 and won the tournament by two strokes over hosting LSU. Auburn shot a 297-289-287--873 and led the final two rounds. The following week the Tigers won their second consecutive tournament, taking the Lady Gamecock Classic at the University Club in Blythewood, S.C. Auburn (304-278-29- -879) shot a 278, the tournament low score, in the second round on their way to an 18-stroke margin of victory over Tennessee. Back-to-Back Southeastern Conference Champions Since its inception in 1994, the Auburn Tiger-Derby Invitational has earned a reputation for being one of the nation s finest women s collegiate golf tournaments. The tournament gives each team an early barometer of how it stacks up against the top teams in the nation. The top teams in the country have graced The Derby and 2005 was no exception with a field including Alabama, Auburn, Duke, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Kansas, LSU, Mississippi, North Carolina State, UNC Wilmington, Oklahoma State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Florida. At the start of the 1998 event, the Auburn Tiger Invitational was renamed the Auburn Tiger-Derby Invitational beginning in 1999 in honor of Curtis Cup Champion and former Auburn player and coach, Virginia Derby-Grimes. Grimes played at Auburn under legendary Coach Bud Marsee in 1985 when the women s golf program was re-instituted after a four-year hiatus. She then came back to coach the Tiger golf team for three years from 1991-94 while leading them to a pair of NCAA East Regional berths. She orchestrated the beginning of the Auburn Tiger Invitational in 1994. We couldn t think of a more distinguished or better person to name our tournament after than Virginia Derby-Grimes, former Auburn athletic director David Housel said. She has played at Auburn, coached at Auburn, represented Auburn worldwide and still puts her heart and soul into the Tiger program. Virginia is a great friend to the game of golf and an even bigger part of our Auburn Family. Derby-Grimes, whose career is highly-decorated as being one of the top amateur players in the world, anchored the United States team to a thrilling victory in the final day of the Curtis Cup in the 1994 1. She won the 1998 U.S. Mid-Amateur title and was an alternate for the 1998 USA World Cup team. She is a former Alabama State Amateur Champion and Alabama Junior State Amateur Champion. Since the inaugural tournament held in 1994, the Auburn Tiger- Derby Invitational has consistently attracted top-quality teams and individuals. The 2002 field featured 13 of the best teams in the nation, and Tennessee went on to win the tournament.
