The Amazon river flows 6,400 km through five big countries in South America to empty in the Atlantic Ocean. That washes the salt off the ocean 160 km out to sea. The mouth of the river was first discovered by Europeans, who were very surprised by its size, in 1500. Because it is so big, big ships can sail in the river for 6,300 km. Along its course the Amazon varies in width from 14 km wide to 1.8 km in some places.
