The Bugle Battlefield Boogie Club CREATE DANCE HISTORY CREATE A MEMORY Fredericksburg, Virginia Vol 10 No. 4 July/August 2015 President s Letter Wes Kirchner Wow, half of 2015 has passed by so fast I cannot believe it. Summer fun is in full swing with so many things to do and such little time to do it. I never would have guessed that the older I got the less free time I would have and I hope I am not the only one that this has happened to. Although, chillin with friends and dancing at least once a week I suppose we could call that free time. Free time or not, any time dancing and being with friends is always time well spent. Since summer time is going by so fast July/August Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4 Page 6 Page 7 Page 8 Page 9 Page 10 Page 11,12, 13 President s Letter Line Dance Queen In Memory of What s Up! Happy Feet DJ Schedule Top 40 New Members Shannon s Bar & Grill Flyers be sure to check the front desk for the latest info on upcoming events and parties, etc. I would like to welcome all those who are new to shag dancing. We hope the lessons are working well for you and of course if you have questions or suggestions, we are always there for you. Your instructors work hard to make new steps challenging and exciting to learn as well as fun. I m guessing the word of our little club is starting to spread as we are seeing new people coming weekly wanting to learn to dance. Our membership to date is 93 and growing. Be sure to tell your friends and neighbors to at the least give shag a try. Who knows you may very well be giving them a great form of exercise as well as a great way to meet new friends. Our BIG Annual Cannon Ball Blast is coming up on August 29. Audrey is working hard on making the party come off without a hitch. Hall of Fame DJ, Butch Metcalf coming from High Point, NC, will be playing our favorite beach music. We are still in need of silent auction items. To donate please contact Melinda@ mcroc10s@yahoo.com or Katherine@ kcausby@comcast.net to have items collected. With member support our 11 th annual party should be a huge success. Darlene has planned a Sock Hop for July 23 rd and I am sure we will have great time strolling down the lane (remember that?). The hula hoop contest is always a hit. Bill Frostick will be playing some of those oldies that bring back so many memories from an earlier time. I don t know about you but those were some good times. Be sure to dress in your favorite clothes from that exciting era. In closing I would like to say how saddened we are with the loss of our dear friend and past President of the Northern Virginia Shag Club and coordinator of this July s ACSC workshop, David Bushey. David s enthusiasm for the shag and his friendly smile will be missed by all. Wes
Celebrating Jewell~ Our friend and dance enthusiast, Jewell Pradier is moving away from our local area to follow a new and exciting job opportunity. We are so happy for Jewell and we all gathered with cake and good wishes to bid her good luck and lots of cheer. Yes, over the past few years Jewell has been our line dance queen, teaching and trying to instill in us, a sense of groovy rhythm. Jewell is a master at rhythm. We have all benefited from her contagious spirit. And we also shared her lap top studying while she would eat her soup and try to concentrate between dancing and sharing time with us. Jewell has been a real trooper being with us each week while completing her continued education. Way to go Jewell~ We will miss you and will only let you go if you promise to remain a BBC member, take the dance fever to Paris Island and come back to us whenever you can. It will not be long before the Paris Island folks will know your name and your spirit for dance. Go and work hard, take care of yourself and stay in touch~ Thank you, we will miss you!
of Dave Bushey On June 25, our friend David Bushey passed away after fighting an aggressive cancer. Dave was a former President of the Northern Va. Shag Club and a real frontier enthusiast in support of Virginia shag recognition. Among Dave s many life accomplishments, he has been supportive of the junior shaggers and made it an important presence. Most recently Dave was the instrumental force in planning, proposing and receiving the winning bid to have the shag clubs governing body Association of Carolina Shag Clubs (ACSC) organization to have their summer workshop/ convention in Northern Virginia. Dave was passionate about this. The NVSC chose to combine their annual Classic party with the ACSC meeting which would project an attendance of 300-400 folks coming in from Virginia, the Carolinas, Fla., Tenn., Pa., NY, and NJ. He organized many committees and charged all of them to stay on top of their tasks to work toward a memorable and successful event. When Dave s cancer progressed he refused to stop and his grope for energy and tenacity represented true grit in trying to be present for the July 10-12 event. Dave s wife Angie was his support, encourager and his strength. Although Dave could not make the July weekend he would be pleased to know that things went just like he planned with all of his team at work. His dream of success would be a reality. Thank you Dave for all that you did for the shag world. May you rest in peace with no more pain. We will miss you. A Tribute to Dr. Phil Sawyer The shag world has lost a true friend, supporter and ole time shagger, Dr. Phil Sawyer. Dr. Phil as he is referred to, passed away on June 27. He was 83 seasoned years with a heart of gold. He was the main founder of the ACSC and SOS. He championed many means to overcome hurdles in the early days of the SOS and some of the shag politics of the early days and over time. Dr. Phil was a true sponsor for the shag world, its venues for dance where friends could meet and providing for a lifestyle of good times. His book, Save the Last Dance For Me, is on sale at the SOS Company Store and should be a book in each of our shelves. Dr. Phil is legendary, and will be missed by all of those that are serious about our shag life. May he rest in peace. We will miss Dr. Phil among us and will not forget him!
