Friday 13 January 2017 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SUCCESS FOR HATTIE Hattie (pictured right) on the water in Buenos Aires Hattie and her brother have recently managed to finish in fourth place from 56 boats at the Cadet World Championship in San Isidro, Buenos Aires. At the start of the last day Hattie was placed fifth overall after eight races with two races left to sail. It was an agonising last day as, despite sailing really well, she just missed out on third place by 0.1 point. However she was the top placed girl in the whole Championship and fourth position overall is a fantastic result given how many countries and crews were competing in the World Championships. Overall, Team GB performed very well and all our GBR sailors finished in the top half. Hattie visited the British Embassy with the rest of Team GB at the end, where an official reception was held. She also spent some time in Buenos Aires seeing the sights, including La Boca Juniors iconic football stadium. It must have been a really exciting (and unusual) Christmas. We are all most impressed, Hattie! Well done. MHB WELL DONE EDIE AND MIA Students Edie and Mia were selected to perform in the Rose Theatre's Christmas production of The Wind in the Willows which received fantastic reviews. They auditioned against many other children and were successful in gaining much coveted spots in the cast, alongside professional adult actors in the lead roles. Congratulations to them both. 2 A GOOD CAUSE Huge thanks to the Sixth Form community for their very generous donations to the Ace of Clubs Shelter for Homeless on Clapham Common. This is a charity the Sixth Form has supported for more than 10 years and I think this year was our best yet in terms of contributions, which is brilliant! Most of our donations were items on the Ace of Clubs wish list of non-perishable tinned food and warm clothes. The thoughtful bathroom and kitchen goods, and wrapped gifts were also very much appreciated. A special mention to Ms Malik s tutor group who managed to send 150 s worth of Sainsbury s food vouchers, alongside their other donations, enabling Ace to buy fresh food. Thank you to the chief co-ordinators in each tutor group and thanks to those who accompanied me to the centre (see picture) and helped load up the bus. Great work Emanuel! DCH ROBOT COMPETITION BY OLLIE When we first got to the venue we quickly set about programming our robots to complete a series of challenges. These included moving objects such as a shark tank (yes a real shark), humans and dogs. The objects were placed on a competition table and the two robots - Emanuel Blue and Emanuel Gold - were programmed to move the items over a distance. For most of the team (Hill Form and Year 7 students) it was our first time taking part in the competition. Unfortunately, because of our inexperience, we were not aware of some of the rules and we were penalised for touching the robot(s) during the challenge. Neither did we allow enough time to programme (code) Emanuel Blue to complete its challenge. We had fun though and will be better prepared for next year s challenge. CONFIRMATION 2017 The chaplain will be offering preparation classes for any student thinking about confirmation (Church of England). The enquirers group will begin meeting before February half term and the confirmation service itself is likely to be in June 2017. The confirmation group classes are informative, informal and enjoyable and there is no obligation to proceed with confirmation at the end of the series of meetings. Anyone interested in confirmation should contact the chaplain as soon as possible, either directly or by email on forbes.walker@emanuel.org.uk. Parents should also feel free to contact the chaplain on behalf of their son or daughter or indeed with any questions about confirmation or the preparation process. HHM THE PRODUCERS Tickets are now on sale for this year s musical, The Producers. Based on Mel Brooks much loved Academy Award-winning movie, this is a hilarious musical comedy that has taken Broadway and the West End by storm, winning a record-breaking 12 Tony Awards and 3 Olivier Awards. Impoverished by a string of flops, New York producer Max Bialystock recruits timid accountant Leo Bloom to help him pull off Broadway s greatest scam. They aim to produce the worst show ever and run away with millions, but they soon learn that show-business can kick you in the teeth. Performances take place in the Hampden Hall 15-18 March at 7pm. 3 PARENTS PRAYER GROUP Prayer and reflection is an important part of life at Emanuel not only for the pupils but for all members of the community. A group of parents has expressed interest in establishing an informal prayer group which will meet in the school chapel (8.30am - 8.50am) on a monthly basis (first Thursday of the month in term time) to offer prayers. They pray: for the needs of the school that are known to them in response to prayer requests coming from members of the school community and also in response to prayers and requests that the pupils, staff and parents have placed in the prayer box just outside the chapel. Whilst prayer is the focus of this group, it also allows space and an opportunity to develop supportive and friendly relationships across the school community. The prayer group welcomes all parents and is open to anyone at any time. If you would like to come along please just show up. Here are the details: An informal evening launch of the prayer group including Holy Communion and refreshments on Wednesday 18 January at 7pm in the school chapel. Thereafter the dates of the prayer meetings (school chapel 8.30am - 8.50am) will be: Thursday 2 February, Thursday 2 March, Thursday 4 May and Thursday 6 July. For more information please contact the chaplain on forbes.walker@emanuel.org.uk. RFW CHRISTMAS TRIP TO LILLE BY MARIANNE It was an early start to the day having left St Pancras at 9am. But, as soon as we arrived in Lille, our spirits lifted. Splitting up into two teams, my group went on bus tour of the town, taking in the old and modern buildings, parks and statues. When finished we went to the Christmas market where we spent 45-minutes buying presents and exploring the stalls. Afterwards we went on the huge (and fast) Ferris wheel. Everyone squealed with delight! From the top of the big wheel we could see the beautiful sunset. Our last stop was a trip to the shopping centre. We then walked to the Eurostar for our return trip to London. It was a fantastic experience and a great way to end the year. Thank you to Ms Leprêtre for organising it. 4 SPORT RUGBY U15A V WINDSOR BOYS FINAL SCORE: 41-0 (WON) We attacked with verve and skill in the first 20 minutes, and although we went through a period of making unforced errors in the second half, we weathered the storm and finished the game with more tries. Guy marked a welcome return to fitness following injury with two tries. Oscar and Aiden showed their running strength and finishing skills with a try apiece and Nat weighed in with three well-struck conversions. Alfie moved from flanker to winger and scooped a hat trick of tries as a result! Great work. Both Finn F and Finn L, and A team debutant Freddie, were superb in the front row. Henry picked up the Man of Steel for a display of guts (not literally!) and physicality all over the field. To not concede any points was a huge achievement in what was an excellent way to round off the term s rugby. We end the term on played 14, won 7, lost 7. I m proud of this record and the squad s efforts. DCH U14A V IBSTOCK PLACE FINAL SCORE: 27-14 (WON) BY MAX Emanuel started the game in a positive fashion, passing the ball well and soon had the lead with Jay scoring an unconverted try in the corner. Ibstock immediately hit back with a converted try to take the lead for only a short period of time. With the home team continuing to press hard, some excellent tackling and dominating at the breakdown, Emanuel quickly added more tries through Benny and a second by Jay. Ibstock scored their final try of the match to close the gap at half time, however Emanuel were determined to keep their recent run of victories on track throughout the second half. With a large number of regular team members absent for the game, the strong performances of all players called up for the fixture proved Emanuel have strength in depth. Good play from Charlie, Barnaby, Gabriel, Fred and Billy enabled Emanuel to assert themselves on the match with Nick adding two fine tries in the second period. Some determined tackling by Monty, Benny and Man of the Match Charlie enabled the boys to finish strongly for Emanuel's eleventh straight victory. U12A V HALLIFORD FINAL SCORE 20-15 (LOST) The referee blew his whistle and the match was under way. Halliford is a strong rugby school. It showed in the first five minutes as they were threatening to score several times. Emanuel responded brilliantly by defending well and then attacking over the half way line. The long, slow minutes of pressure paid off as Emanuel scored after 10 mins. Even though we were a try ahead, we were hungry for more. Emanuel scored again just before half time, making it 10-0, but Halliford came out hungry in the second half putting us under pressure and scoring twice in the first 10 minutes. Emanuel responded brilliantly by defending well and then attacking over the half way line Five minutes later they scored again to make it 15-10 to the home side. The Emanuel team responded brilliantly with a beautifully worked try, but in the final minute the Halliford team scored. Emanuel left devastated with their first loss of the season after such a close game. Some great play from the team great performances from Tom, Ben, Olly, Thomas and Matthew; and some great rucking and all-round play from Louis, Max, Isaac, Martin, Ben A and James. We look forward to 2017 with renewed determination and a desire to build on this winning team s formula. TG U12A V IBSTOCK PLACE FINAL SCORE: 40-5 (WON) BY JACOB EMLER We scored a few early tries and we went into half time in front. That was some good first half performances from Matt, Hal and Tom. There was also some good rucking from Ben and Hughie. In the second half they scored a try which was well worked and they just about got over the line. The best try of the match came from Ollie. It was a very good team try a good team try was built up through our very strong offloading game which was built up through our very strong offloading game. Max and Martin were good with their support play and strength with the ball in hand. There was some big hits in the defensive line from Andrew and Tom. It was a great start to the new year but we will have tougher tests to come. Our defense was strong and so was our running game but we need to work on our handling skills for our next match. U12C V HALLIFORD FINAL SCORE 30-20 (LOST) The match was an unfortunate loss. This was because of our lack of rucking, use of the wing and we took the ball into contact too much. Therefore the majority of the opposition s tries was scored in the first half. But this changed in the second half, at the very start Jack scored a try followed by Will then Barnaby then by Will again. We can learn from this and try and succeed next time. 5 NETBALL U15B V JAGS FINAL SCORE: 23-10 (LOST) BY BLUEBELL As it was a home game we were hoping this would be to our advantage. Unfortunately we played outside and, despite being under floodlight, it was still very dark. Add to this the slippery conditions, we were still optimistic about winning. In the first quarter we were off to a good start with some excellent interceptions from Maddy. We were working hard but JAGS had come determined. By the end of the first quarter we were even, the score 4-4. The second quarter saw some excellent The second quarter saw some excellent play between the defence U15B V SURBITON HIGH FINAL SCORE: 13-8 (WIN) BY BLUEBELL We travelled to Surbiton to play our final match of the season. We were all hoping for victory after our last match. Knowing that Surbiton would be tough competition we weren t overly confident on the way there. Miss Holden got us all pumped before going on court and we started in fighting spirits. In the first quarter Surbiton came out hard but we fought back with some good attacking play from Sophie, moving the ball quickly down the court. It was neck-and-neck, with Surbiton winning the first quarter 2-1. The second and third quarter saw some amazing defensive play from Tove, who managed to stop most of the balls from going in the goal using her height and long arms. By the end of the third quarter we were up 9-7. By this point we were beginning to believe that we could win and going into the last quarter we were ready to put everything we had left into doing so. The final quarter saw some of the best play from any of our matches. We kept getting the ball straight into the shooting D with the ball moving swiftly up court between Viviane and Becky. The opposition managed to only get one shot past us during the final quarter. Player of the match was rewarded to Viviane. We were very happy with our win, especially considering the huge rivalry between the schools. play between the defence which has improved hugely since the beginning of the season. The third and fourth quarter saw lots of excellent play as well as a few gymnastic splits due to the very slippery floor. There was some superb shooting from Sophie. We tried our best and put all of what we had left into the match but unfortunately JAGS were too strong and they won the match. Player of the Match was Bluebell. U12A V GODOLPHIN AND LATIMER FINAL SCORE: 20-8 (WIN) BY EVA It was the coldest netball game we had all played but we warmed up quickly which ensured we lead comfortably at half time. Maddy P and Maddy A as our defenders got lots of great interceptions and Olivia, Rosie, Sas worked well together in the centre third feeding the ball nicely into the circle so our shooters (Ella and Lucy) could score all our goals for us. We worked well as a team and our opposition were strong but so were we. Our fitness told in the last quarter as we managed to end the game with a win. U15 V BROMLEY HIGH INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS NATIONAL NETBALL CUP FINAL SCORE: 37-27 (WON) BY INDIA We started off the match with great defence all down the court especially by Jay in GD which helped us to get the ball to our shooters and end the first quarter with the score of 8-4. We continued to fight for the ball in the second quarter with Poppy in WA and Tash in WD working excellently to get the ball down the court. Despite, the oppositions great defence throughout the court, Maddie Jeynes in GS did some excellent movement movement around the circle, helping us to get the score to 13-12. In the third quarter we were determined to widen our lead. Maisie did an excellent job in GK getting some great interceptions in the oppositions shooting circle and then passing it down the court. We all continued to defend and attack the ball, getting the score up to 27-21 by the end of the quarter. The whole team was ready for fight to keep our lead in the last quarter. As well as some fantastic shots, Grace in GA did some excellent defence helping us to increase our lead. The player of the match deservedly went to Poppy Sendell who consistently worked hard to get the ball down the court. We were all very happy with the final score of 37-27 which means we are through to the quarter finals, later on this month.
6 ROWING Down at the School Boathouse on the first Saturday of the Christmas Holidays, we held a short boat-naming ceremony and our annual Xmas Pudding Races. With the river shrouded in mist, it was a poignant start to the proceedings, with the first of three Wintech pairs, being named Charlotte Easton. Charlotte was not only an outstanding oarswoman herself, but despite not being able to help out in the way she would have liked due to other commitments, she always showed great support for the rowers and the Boat Club in general. The next boat was Catherine Shiplee, named in honour of the previous Chair of the ESBC Supporters committee. Whilst a parent at the school, she worked tirelessly to organise the provision of food, support and funds for Emanuel Rowing. Last but not least was Chetan ChauhanSims. A past pupil at the school, this was in recognition of Chetan s superb contribution to Emanuel Rowing and two-time international representation, including a silver medal at the World Junior Rowing Championships in 2014. It was great that Charlotte s dad (Mike) and husband (Sam), Catherine and Chetan, were all able to be there in person to christen the boats. Immediately following the boatnaming, were the Christmas Pudding Races. As last year, we managed to boat six octuples, with the names of 54 Emanuel boys and girls from Year 9 upwards going into a hat and drawn out randomly into six crews for a knockout competition. With the standard of sculling and coxing at an all-time high, we had some great racing to entertain all the mums, dads and other supporters, who were enjoying the incredible range of hot and cold snacks, champagne and mulled wine on the bank! After some fiercely-fought battles, the crew of Kyra, Issy, Maddie, Joe, Siddiq, Leo, Kathleen, Charlie and Jess, came out on top to win the coveted 2016 Christmas Puddings. A big thank you to Sam Gourevitch for organising the racing, and to the ESBC Supporters committee for providing the excellent hospitality enjoyed by all. DMC
