Sunday will mark the second ever meeting with the Tigers, with the last meeting taking place back in November 2007, an 88-41 Buckeye win at VCA. Friday marks the second meeting with Temple in as many years after the Buckeyes opened up with an 84-75 win in Philadelphia a year ago. Tennessee State, located in Nashville, Tenn., finished 9-21 last season but return four starters and nine letterwinners, including leading scorer Tayla Foster (11.6 ppg). The Lady Tigers open their season Friday, Nov. 11 at Cleveland State before making the trip down I-71 to face the Buckeyes Sunday. Tennessee State defeated LeMoyne-Owen College, 78-60, in an exhibition Nov. 1. Junior forward and Columbus Northland native Destiney Gaston paced the Lady Tigers with 15 points and 12 rebounds in the win. Junior Samantha Prahalis was named Big Ten preseason co-player of the year in October. She finished third in the NCAA with 6.9 assists per game last season. OSU IN SEASON OPENERS Ohio State has won its last 16 season openers, including last year s 84-75 win at Temple. The Buckeyes have not dropped a season opener since 1994 and a home opener since 1985, a 78-76 loss to Texas. All-time, Ohio State is 36-10 in seasonopening games. SNEAK PREVIEW Jim Foster s Buckeyes will feature somewhat of a new look this season compared to years past with a more guard-oriented attack. For the past eight years Ohio State has featured a dominate post player in All-Americans Jessica Davenport (2004-07) and Jantel Lavender (2008-11). And after recently losing Lavender to graduation and the WNBA along with departed seniors Brittany Johnson, Sarah Schulze and Alison Jackson the Buckeyes will now look to create more within the backcourt, with their defense and out in transition. We re going to play different, Foster said during Ohio State s media day. Our strength is in our guards, so we will play a lot more through them. That requires good guards and that s what we have. He s right. Back are three starters from last year s team that went 24-10 and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the second time in three years. Starters back include all-big Ten point guard Samantha Prahalis, Big Ten all-defensive guard Tayler Hill and center Ashley Adams, who earned a spot on last year s Big Ten all-freshman team. Back from injuries will be redshirt freshman Amy Scullion and redshirt sophomore Aleksandra Dobranic. With that said, Foster, who is entering his 10th season at Ohio State, will feature the youngest lineup in the Big Ten this season with one senior Prahalis. He knows this team will only go as far as his flashy point guard will take them. And heading into her senior season, she s up to the challenge. I m looking forward to my new role. (I think our offense) will be easier, with more of a flow, Prahalis said. We re going to be open and the post will be higher than before. I think it will be great and we ll fit right into the system. We have a lot of fun and this team gets along really well. I m really looking forward to this season. A YOUTHFUL BUNCH According to data compiled by the NCAA, Ohio State will feature the youngest roster in the Big Ten this season with just one senior, three juniors, five sophomores and four freshmen. Two Buckeyes have 170 career starts between them, with the 11 other players having just 16 combined. Aside from Prahalis (101 career starts) and Hill (69), the Buckeyes have just three other players in Adams (16), Stokes (1) and Ellerbe (1) with previous starting experience. PRAHALIS EARNS PRESEASON RECOGNITION Samantha Prahalis and Penn State s Alex Bentley shared Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year accolades from the coaches at the Big Ten media days in Chicago in October. Prahalis was a second-team All-Big Ten selection a season ago, guiding the Buckeyes to the third round of the NCAA tournament. With Prahalis at the point, the Buckeyes won 24 games and claimed their third straight Big Ten tournament title. Last season she was second on the team with 14.5 points per game while leading the Big Ten and ranking third in the NCAA with 6.9 assists. In the process, she became Ohio State s all-time assists leader (707) and was a finalist for the Nancy Lieberman Award, given to the nation s top point guard. She also became the only Buckeye to record at least 1,000 points and 700 assists in a career. The Commack, N.Y., native also earned a spot on the preseason Wooden Award watch list. A LOOK BACK AT 2010-11 The Buckeyes advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the second time in three years, falling to No. 1 seed Tennessee in the Dayton Regional, 85-75. Ohio State won a record-tying third consecutive Big Ten tournament championship. Jantel Lavender became the first men s or women s player to win Big Ten player of the year four consecutive years and also earned WBCA All-America honors for the third year in a row. Samantha Prahalis was named second (media) and third team (coaches) all-big Ten, Tayler Hill was named to the Big Ten all-defensive team and Ashley Adams named to the Big Ten all-freshman team. Ohio State recorded its ninth straight 20-win season under head coach Jim Foster, marking the 25th of Foster s career and 12th consecutive overall. Ohio State is just one of nine Division I schools to win at least 20 games in each of the last nine seasons. After going 8-8 combined in the months of December and January, the Buckeyes finished strong, going 6-1 in February and 5-1 in March and winning 11 of their last 12 overall. 2011-12 OHIO STATE ROSTER No. Name Ht. Defensively, OSU allowed just two teams to shoot 50 percent or better last season. The first was No. 1 UConn (.500) Dec. 19 at Madison Square Garden. The second was No. 23 Penn State Feb. 17 in an 89-67 Buckeye win. Ohio State is 140-13 at home overall under Jim Foster and 113-9 since the start of 2004-05. Ohio State went 8-3 against ranked teams and 13-4 against teams that made the NCAA tournament. Lavender was chosen 5th overall by the Los Angeles Sparks in April s WNBA Draft Ohio State has 193 wins over the last seven seasons, tied for the 9th most among NCAA Division I teams in that span. Ohio State went 20-3 when scoring 70+ points and 14-0 when scoring at least 80. They were 4-7 when scoring fewer than 70. Ohio State was 25-0 in 2009-10 when scoring 70 or more and 6-5 when scoring fewer. Ohio State went 19-3 last year and is 88-9 since the start of the 2007-08 season when it ties/ makes more than its opponents at the line. Since the start of 2004-05, the Buckeyes are 51-5 in Big Ten games at Value City Arena. Ohio State had been ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 for 130 straight weeks until the streak was snapped the week of Jan. 31, 2011. They returned to the rankings at No. 18 in the March 7, 2011 AP poll. Ohio State is 14-3 in its last 17 postseason games (9-0 at the Big Ten tournament and 5-3 in NCAA play). Jim Foster is now 34-25 all-time in the NCAA tournament in his career. Ohio State shot a season-high 59.5 percent from the field in the NCAA win over Georgia Tech, including 63.6 in the second half. Ohio State boasted the fourth-toughest schedule in the country according to RealtimeRPI.com. With the win over No. 9 Michigan State Jan. 16, Ohio State picked up its first win over a top 10 opponent since Dec. 20, 2006 when No. 8 OSU defeated No. 3 Oklahoma in Norman, 74-67. The win at No. 10/8 Michigan State Feb. 24 marked the first time since the 2004-05 season that Ohio State recorded two wins over top 10 teams. That year, Ohio State defeated No. 6 Michigan State (68-54) and No. 7 Rutgers (52-50). Ohio State ranked second in the Big Ten with 74.1 points per game last year and first with 72.4 in Big Ten play. Jantel Lavender (2,818 points) became Ohio State s all-time leading scorer Feb. 13 at Minnesota, breaking Katie Smith s previous mark of 2,578 points. Samantha Prahalis led the Big Ten and ranked third in the nation with 6.9 assists per game. Prahalis totaled 25 assists in three NCAA tournament games against UCF, Georgia Tech and Tennessee. Prahalis became Ohio State s all-time assists leader (now with 707) with 11 in the win over No. 23 Penn State Feb. 17. She broke the old record of 643 held by Jamie Lewis. Prahalis did it in 93 career games, compared to Lewis 643 in 117 games. Prahalis became the fifth player in Big Ten history to record at least 700 assists and is the only Buckeye to record 1,000 points and 700 assists. Prahalis recorded her first career triple-double with 13 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds against Northwestern. Brittany Johnson became the 29th player in school history to record 1,000 points in the win over UCF March 19. Prahalis is the fastest Buckeye to record 500 and 600 assists in a career and is the only Buckeye to record at least 1,000 points and 700 assists in a career. In 2009-10, she set a Big Ten record with 289. NOTING THE BUCKEYES #21 SAMANTHA PRAHALIS Prahalis became Ohio State s all-time assists leader this season (707), passing Jamie Lewis (643). Over the final 11 games of the regular season, Adams recorded 104 points (9.4), 67 rebounds (6.1), 19 assists and 32 blocks (2.9), including seven in the win at Purdue. Adams scored a season-high 18 points on 9-of- 13 shooting against Northwestern Feb. 6 and then recorded her first career double-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks at Minnesota to help her win Big Ten freshman of the week honors for the second time. Adams came out of nowhere off the bench in the win over Illinois Jan. 20 to record 13 points, nine boards, four assists, five blocks and three steals. That game earned her first career start the next game against No. 18 Iowa where she scored 16 points while grabbing seven rebounds. She then won Big Ten freshman of the week honors for her efforts. Adams recorded a season-high seven blocked shots in the road win at Purdue to help Ohio State come back from an 11-point deficit. FOSTER MAKES 12TH CONSECUTIVE NCAA APPEARANCE Head coach Jim Foster made his 12th-consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament and his 25th overall in 2011. He has a record of 34-25 all-time. In Foster s nine seasons at Ohio State, the Buckeyes have earned No. 1 (2006), No. 2 (2005, 2010), No. 3 (2009), No. 4 (2003, 2007, 2011) and No. 6 (2004, 2008) seeds in the tournament. Ohio State has earned at least a second-round finish in seven of nine seasons under Foster, including trips to the Sweet 16 in 2005, 2009 and 2011. MORE MILESTONES FOR FOSTER Last season Ohio State recorded its ninth consecutive 20-win season, marking the 25th of Coach Foster s career, his 12th consecutive overall and his ninth in Columbus, the most of any coach at Ohio State. Foster has done it each year at Ohio State since his first season in 2002-03, including two 30-win seasons (2004-05, 2009-10). Foster, who coached his 1000th career game Dec. 5, 2010 in the win over Oklahoma, won his 700th game Dec. 31, 2009 with an 86-60 win at Northwestern. He is just the second collegiate coach -- men s or women s at any level -- to win at least 200 games at three different schools (C. Vivian Stringer is the other). Foster spent 13 seasons at St. Joseph s (248-126) and 11 at Vanderbilt (256-99) before coaching at Ohio State. HEAD COACH JIM FOSTER Jim Foster is in his 10th season at Ohio State and his 34th overall as a head coach in 2011-12. His collegiate experience consists of jobs at Ohio State, Vanderbilt and St. Joseph s (Pa.) universities. Throughout his coaching career, the Abington, Pa., native has posted a 740-287 (.720) record and his squads have made 26 postseason appearances (25 NCAA tournaments), including 12 consecutive NCAA tournaments. His is the eighthwinningest active coach in Division I and is just the second collegiate coach - men s or women s at any level - to win 200 games at three different schools. At Ohio State, he has helped the Buckeyes qualify for a school-record nine consecutive NCAA tournaments and rank in the national Top 10 in four of the last the last six seasons. A four-time Big Ten coach of the year (2005-07, 09), he led the Buckeyes to a record-setting sixth consecutive Big Ten regular season title and a second straight tournament title in 2010 while setting a program record with 31 wins. During the last seven seasons, Ohio State has the ninth-most wins (193) in Division I women s college basketball and is one of nine schools to win at least 20 games over the last nine years. Since he was hired, Foster has mentored seven Mc- Donald s High School All-Americans, six WNBA Draft picks and two State Farm/WBCA All-Americans in Jantel Lavender (2009, 10, 11) and Jessica Davenport (2005, 06, 07). In the process, he and his players have turned Value City Arena into one of the most intimidating venues for opposing teams as his Buckeyes have posted a remarkable 113-9 record at home over the last seven years and a 140-13 mark overall. But probably the most impressive statistic goes way beyond wins, tournament births and championships. Throughout his coaching career, Coach Foster has preached the importance of academics. And in addition to his players consistently earning high marks in the classroom, every student-athlete who has played for Foster at St. Joe s, Vanderbilt and Ohio State has gone on to earn their degree. Most recently, the women s basketball squad was honored once again with an APR (Academic Progress Rate) score in the top 10 percent of all Division I squads in the sport. Last season the Buckeyes went 24-10, captured their third straight Big Ten tournament title and advanced to their second Sweet 16 in three years -- but not before experiencing some bumps in the road. After starting the season 7-0 and ranked in the top 10, the Buckeyes dropped nine of their next 15 games to drop out of the AP Top 25 for the first time in 130 weeks. After many had written the Buckeyes off, Foster rallied his troops to win their next 11 games that took them all the way to the NCAA Sweet 16 where they eventually lost to No. 1 seed Tennessee. All-American Jantel Lavender would go on to become the first Big Ten player - men s or women s - to win Big Ten player of the year honors all four years and also earn WBCA All-America honors for the third year in a row. She broke numerous Ohio State and Big Ten records while becoming OSU s all-time leading scorer and rebounder and setting an NCAA record by scoring in double-figures in all 136 career games. Samantha Prahalis would earn second team all-big Ten honors, Tayler Hill was named to the all-defensive team while Ashley Adams earned a spot on the all-freshman team. In April 2011, Lavender was chosen 5th overall by the Los Angeles Sparks in the WNBA Draft.
