2015-2016 COMPETITION/PERFORMANCE TEAM INFORMATION The Stony Brook University Cheerleading Team will be holding tryouts for the 2015-2016 Competition and Performance Team on Saturday, May 2 nd from 10am-1pm in Pritchard Gymnasium in the Indoor Sports Complex. Please read this entire packet carefully. All necessary forms are included. Incoming freshmen and transfer students must attach a copy of their official acceptance letter from Stony Brook University to your application. If you are an incoming freshman and have not received an acceptance letter at the time of tryouts, please note that on your application. Current Stony Brook students should bring their Stony Brook ID with them to the tryout. All candidates should complete and bring the following documents to the tryout. (All forms MUST have parent signatures if candidate is under 18 years of age) 1. Tryout Application Packet 2. Stony Brook Student ID card or proof of enrollment at SBU 3. $20 registration fee (Cash or check made payable to Stony Brook University Cheer Team) Those selected for the team will be notified immediately following the tryout and are required to attend a team meeting immediately following the tryout. 1
GENERAL GUIDELINES Selection will be based on the following areas: INTERVIEW PORTION Candidates will be asked questions about their dedication to the team, their role as an ambassador for Stony Brook University and their role and expectations as a future member of the Stony Brook Cheerleading Team. You will be judged on poise, integrity and honest and qualified answers. The Coach and Spirit Coordinator will conduct interviews. STUNT PORTION Candidates must try out for only one position. You may be asked to demonstrate additional positions, as requested. During the tryout process you will be asked to stunt with different people. You are only allowed to stunt with athletes trying out or current Stony Brook Cheerleaders. You cannot bring someone to stunt with to tryouts. Stunts may include: - extension full down cradle - liberty full down cradle - heel stretch full down cradle - full up extension - collegiate level pyramids Base: Must have correct technique and strength to build various stunts; must be able to perform minimum levels of stunt; must be able to be both the main base and/or side base. Back Spot: Must have correct technique of back spotting various stunts; must be able to spot and cradle from any level of difficulty. Top: Must have correct technique and strength to build and execute various stunts; must be able to express confidence and lead a crowd from a stunt; must be willing to try various levels of stunting and executions; must be able to perform one legged stunts and transitional stunt sequences. - Shoulder Stand (Assisted or Unassisted) - Full-Up Stunt, & twisting dismount - Single Base Stunt 2 to 3 people total in the group (Assisted or Unassisted) - Optional Sequence (3 skills and 2 transitions maximum TUMBLING PORTION Candidates will perform their tumbling skills one at a time. You may be asked to do th - Best standing tumbling (back handspring, back tuck, back handspring back tuck, etc.) - Best running tumbling pass 2
SIDELINE PORTION Candidates will learn and perform a sideline in small groups. Candidates will be judged on: - Execution, sharpness, and projection - Use of sign, poms, megaphone Scores from the above categories will be added up and team will be selected based on natural score break. There is no set number of team members at this time. Past team sizes have ranged from 10 to 24. All decisions are final. The 2015-2016 team will be announced immediately following the tryout. A short meeting for the new team will take place immediately following the announcement of the new team. A Fall 2015 tryout will be held if necessary. This decision will be made at the conclusion of the May tryout. **Being on the Cheerleading Team is a significant time commitment. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS WHAT SHOULD I WEAR? All candidates should wear a plain white t-shirt, shorts (red or black), and appropriate footwear (sneakers). HOW SHOULD I WEAR MY MAKE-UP AND HAIR? You should be game ready at all times throughout the tryout. We ask that you have game makeup on at all times and have your hair styled away from your face. If you are unsure what 'game ready' means, check out pictures on our Facebook page! WHEN DO I REPORT FOR THE TRYOUT? Registration will begin promptly at 9:30am on Saturday, May 2nd. IMPORTANT DATES AND FINANCIAL INFORMATION Summer Practices July 30 th -August 5 th ; Pre-camp practices Camp August 6 th -9 th ; UDA Camp in Scranton, PA Band Camp August 18-24 th **On-campus residents will be able to move in early Regular Season Practices Mondays, Wednesdays; 7-10pm Fridays; 5-9pm (fall semester only) Nationals Practices: Select weekends for choreography December 17-21 January 2-14 Nationals Travel January 15-19, 2016 America East Tournament (Basketball) March Possible Post-Season Basketball Travel During Spring Break Community, Campus and Athletic events as assigned; Various Dates Financial Obligations for New Members The Performance/Competition Team charges dues of $250 per year. Dues are payable on or before the first day of pre-camp practices. Dues are NON-refundable. Members who have not paid dues by the first day of precamp practices will not practice, perform or compete. There is a one-time apparel purchase required by new members. Items may include: a. Nike Warmup $70 **Purchase of warm-up is optional. The team can issue one to you, but it must be returned at the end of the year and you are responsible for its care and maintenance. b. T-shirts (3) $20 c. Sweatshirt $25 d. Sneakers (TBD) 5
