THOUSANDS OF ELM TREES in Illinis have been killed by disease in the last ten years. Many f these trees in residential areas had t be cut prmptly t reduce the physical hazard, leaving stumps and the prblem f remving them. A simple and inexpensive methd fr the hmewner t use in destrying ne r a few stumps n his prperty has been develped at the University f Illinis. The stump is treated with Stumpfyre,a a mixture f fur chemicals in spring r early summer. The chemical mixture is allwed t diffuse thrugh the wd fr 2 t 3 mnths; then the stump is burned. Tests carried ut by the Department f Frestry shwed that abut 80 percent f the stump was destryed when treated with Stumpfyre, whereas nly 30 percent was destryed when n chemical was used. The schedule belw gave gd results in the field tests. I t is recmmended that yu fllw the instructins clsely. CUT THE STUMP as clse (flush) t the grund as practical. a Patent applicatin filed by the University f Illinis. Mst f the abve-grund prtin f this stump was remved with a pwer saw. Sme f the hles were nt lcated clse enugh t the bark, and an extra hle r tw in sme areas wuld have been desirable. (Fig. 1) 2
This rt extensin failed t burn, prbably because the chemical was nt distributed thrughut the wd. Anther hle shuld have been bred at the lcatin shwn by the small stne. (Fig. 2) BORE VERTICAL HOLES 1 t l1h inches in diameter n 5- t 6-inch centers. They shuld be abut 6 inches deep in flush-cut stumps. D nt bre thrugh the bttm. Keep utside hles within 2 inches f the bark (Fig. 1)". In rt extensins bre hles 3 t 4 inches apart a nd as deep as pssible withut ging thrugh the bttm (Fig. 2). A 1/2-inch electric drill with a Planetr Magic Feed Bit gave excellent service in the bring tests. MIX STUMPFYRE. Mix jjwdered frms f the fllwing chemicals: b Number f punds fr Parts by an 8-pund Chemical name Frmula weight batch Cupric chlride........ CuCl2 3 Sdium dichrmate... Na2Cr207 9 Lead acetate Pb (Ac )2 2 Manganese chlride.... MnCl2 2 Thin the mixture with water t abut the cnsistency f heavy transmissin il r thick mlasses. T find hw many punds f thinned chemical mixture yu will need, divide the number f hles bred in the stump by 4. b A list f cmpanies that sell the chemicals may be btained n request frm the Department f Frestry, 219 Mumfrd Hall, Urbana. 3
POUR STUMPFYRE INTO HOLES, using abut!fj. cup per hle. If they will nt hld all the chemical at the start, add the remainder as sn as yu can. Be sure that there is sme Stumpfyre in each hle. Althugh yu need nt measure the amunt exactly, distribute the chemical s that it can diffuse int all parts f the stump. CAUTION! Be careful when handling and string Stumpfyre. Wear rubber glves t prtect yur hands and wash hands after handling the chemical. Stumpfyre will crrde metal and damage clthing. Stre it in a glass cntainer and keep it ut f reach f children and animals. COVER TREATED STUMP with a reflectr-shield f aluminum fil t prtect it frm ram (Fig. 3) while the The underside (reflecting) f this shield is cvered with kitchen-type, aluminum fil, fastened with paper adhesive tape. The shield is built f 1,4 -inch tempered hardbard reinfrced with 1- by 2-inch wd framing. Tw methds f supprting shields ver stumps with small stakes are shwn in the backgrund. Keep the shield as clse t the smuldering stump as pssible withut burning the shield. (Fig. 3) 4
chemical is diffusing int the wd. Befre burning the stump, if any liquid remains in the hles, remve it with a battery syringe. BURN THE STUMP after a ten-day dry perid in August r September. Remve the rerectr-shield and cver the stump with plenty f dry kindling (Fig. 4). Be sure t cver the utside edges and rt extensins. Ignite the kindling and tcnd the fire fr the first hur r s until the kindling is reduced t a bed f cals and the stump is smuldering. During the first hur r s f burning, have water available t quench grass fires r flying embers. If there are small children in the neighbrhd, the stump shuld be fenced. Replace thc reflectr-shield nce the stump IS muldering. If the fire ges ut, begin again, using fresh kindling. Test stumps have smuldered frm ne t three weeks. The time depends n the size f the stump, the weather, and the cmpleteness f treatment (Fig. 5). A liberal amunt f dry kindling was piled n this stump. D nt use kersene r used crankcase il as a substitute fr kindling. Charcal is expensive but will serve satisfactrily if enugh is used. (Fig. 4) 5
This stump was almst cmpletely destryed. The hle will b~ filled prmptly with sil, the sil tightly packed in place, and the spt seeded with grass. (CAUTION: D nt leave the hle: uncvered s that it may cause smene injury.) If a tree i._ t be planted in the spt, remve as many ashes as yu can ani; enlarge the hle slightly. Use fresh sil t plant the trct. (Fig. 5; This circular was prepared by C. S. Walters, Prfessr f Frestry, and K. R. Petersn, Research Assciate in Frestry.
