Now the Redhawks return to a place where they have posted a 14-4 record since Jan. 1, 2009, and welcome the San Jose State Spartans for the first meeting between the two schools in Seattle in 55 years. THE EASTERN WASHINGTON GAME: Seattle University made a furious comeback, cutting a 20-point lead down to two points late in the game, but Eastern Washington made its free throws down the stretch to hold off the Redhawks, 95-91, Wednesday evening at Reese Court. Four players scored in double figures for Seattle U, led by freshman Sterling Carter, who earned his first career double-double with 19 points and 1 assists, the most assists in a single game by a Redhawk player in four years. Aaron Broussard scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half, while Alex Jones contributed 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Taylor Stevens, who had not scored a point in limited action so far this season, made a major contribution to the comeback, scoring 11 second half points. He hit his third three-pointer of the night with 1:45 remaining in the second half to make it a one-possession game. Eastern Washington started the second half on a 14-4 run, with back-to-back three-pointers by Glen Dean and Kevin Winford giving the Eagles a 59-9 lead four minutes into the second half. Down by 19 with 8:18 to play, the Redhawks started chipping away at the lead, starting with consecutive three-pointers by Carter. Broussard brought the deficit into single digits with a traditional three-point play and a layup to cut the Eagles lead to 77-70 with 4:14 left. Seattle U started sending Eastern Washington to the free throw line to try to extend the game, but the Eagles, held without a field goal in the final eight minutes of the contest, went 18-of-22 from the charity stripe in the final four minutes to hold off the Redhawk rally. As a team, the Redhawks shot 44.2 percent (4-of- 77) from the field, including 9-of-28 from behind the three-point line, and 7.7 percent (14-of-19) from the free throw line. Seattle U won the rebounding battle, 42-9, pulling down 20 offensive boards along the way, and committed only 11 turnovers.

SCOUTING SAN JOSE STATE: The Spartans come into Saturday s game with a 6- overall record, including a -2 road record with victories at Eastern Washington, at Oregon, and at UC Irvine. San Jose State is scoring 72.7 points per game and giving up 70. points per contest. As a team, the Spartans are shooting 9. percent from the field, including 2.2 percent from behind the three-point line, and 77. percent from the free throw line. Senior Adrian Oliver leads the team in scoring, averaging 25.4 points per game, which is third in the country among Division I players. Justin Graham is averaging 14.9 points per game, shooting 56.0 percent from behind the three-point line. Keith Shamburger is contributing 10.1 points per game, helped in part by a.909 free throw percentage. Wil Carter leads the team in rebounding with 9.0 rebounds per game to go along with 8.4 points per contest. SEATTLE U VS. SAN JOSE STATE: Seattle University and San Jose State will meet for the sixth time in history, with San Jose State holding a slim -2 series edge. These two teams first met during the 1947-48 season, with San Jose State winning back-to-back games in Seattle (52- and 59-9). Seattle U started the 1955-56 season with back-to-back home games against San Jose State. San Jose State won the first game, 65-59, before Seattle U earned a 62-46 victory in the second game. THE LEADER OF THE REDHAWKS: Cameron Dollar is in his second year as the head coach of the Seattle University men s basketball team. After leading the team to a 17-14 record in 2009-10, he was named Independent Coach of the Year. He did not need to leave the city of Seattle to accept this position, as he had been an assistant coach at the University of Washington under Lorenzo Romar for seven seasons. In 2008-09, the Huskies won their first outright Pac-10 regular season title since 195. Dollar also was instrumental in helping Washington reach the Sweet 16 in both 2005 and 2006. Dollar joined Romar at Saint Louis in 1999, helping the Bilikens win the Conference USA tournament championship in 2000. After spending one season as an assistant for Pat Douglass at UC Irvine, Dollar became the nation s youngest head coach in 1998, taking over the program at Southern California College (now Vanguard University), where he went 11-22 in one season. As a player, Dollar helped UCLA win the 1995 NCAA Championship at the Kingdome in Seattle. LAST YEAR S MEETING: Taylor Olson hit a three-pointer from the right corner with 5.4 seconds left in the second half to give Seattle University a 90-88 victory over San Jose State on Feb. 22, 2010, at the Event Center in San Jose, Calif. The final two minutes were a seesaw battle, starting with a free throw by Charles Garcia with 1:45 left to give SeattleU an 85-84 lead. Adrian Oliver made two free throws to give the Spartans a one-point advantage, followed by empty possessions for each team. Alex Jones stole the ball with 0.7 seconds left to give SeattleU a chance at retaking the lead. Jones hit a jumper with 15 seconds left to put the Redhawks on top, 87-86, but Mac Peterson drew a foul and made both free throws to allow the Spartans to go back on top, 88-87, with 10 seconds left. During Peterson s free throws, San Jose State called timeout to set its defense, but it also allowed SeattleU to draw up the play, and Olson found himself wide open in the corner for the winning shot. The Spartans put the ball in Oliver s hands for one final attempt, but the Redhawk defense swarmed him, and Olson was credited with the steal that sealed the victory. Garcia scored 17 of his team-high 20 points in the second half, plus he pulled down five rebounds and dished out four assists. Jones finished with 17 points on 8-of-1 shooting from the field to go along with three rebounds and three steals, and Cervante Burrell contributed 14 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. RELISHING THE SPOTLIGHT: This season the Seattle University men s basketball team will play five games that will be televised on a regional basis, beginning with the Nov. 8 game at Maryland on Comcast SportsNet Washington and Comcast Sportsnet Northwest. Four home games will be carried by FSN Northwest, including last Saturday s game against Idaho. A FAMILY AFFAIR: When looking for coaches to join his staff, Cameron Dollar did not have to look far to fill one of the assistant positions, just up the family tree. His father Donald Dollar joined the Seattle University men s basketball program last year after a long and distinguished career of coaching high school basketball in Georgia. He earned three state championships, 16 regional titles, 11 appearances in the state semifinals, and eight chances at the state title. Over 5 players who played for Donald Dollar have gone on to play at the Division I or Division II level, with four players having played or presently playing professional basketball. After moving into the college ranks and seeing success at his alma mater Morehouse College, Dollar served as an assistant coach at the University of West Georgia for two seasons.

THE ENGINE OF THE OFFENSE: Once again, Cervante Burrell is one of the keys to the success of the Seattle University men s basketball team. He is third on the team in scoring, averaging 12.6 points per game, and again leads the way in assists, averaging.25 assists per contest. He broke through with a career-high 22 points along with five rebounds and five assists in Seattle U s 8-80 victory over Oregon State. He was a major factor down the stretch in helping the Redhawks hold on to their lead against Navy, finishing with 19 points and going 5-for-6 from the free throw line in the final minute. He earned MVP honors in the 2010 Elgin Baylor Classic against Idaho, scoring 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field and 6-of-7 shooting from the free throw line. ESPN BRACKETBUSTERS: The Seattle University men s basketball team will participate in one of the ESPN BracketBuster games during the weekend of February 18-20, 2011. Seattle U is a designated visiting team. The matchups, including the 11 games chosen to be televised on the ESPN family of networks, will be announced on Jan. 1, 2011. Below is the list of 49 potential opponents for the Redhawks: Stony Brook, Boston University, Idaho State, High Point, Liberty, Presbyterian, UNC Ashville, Winthrop, Long Beach State, UC Santa Barbara, Drexel, James Madison, UNC Wilmington, Old Dominion, Towson, William and Mary, Loyola Chicago, Valparaiso, Wright State, Youngstown State, Fairfield, Marist, Niagara, Rider, Siena, Akron, Buffalo, Eastern Michigan, Northern Illinois, Toledo, Western Michigan, Morgan State, Drake, Indiana State, Northern Iowa, Southern Illinois, Wichita State, Murray State, Southeast Missouri, Tennessee-Martin, Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech, College of Charleston, Western Carolina, Wofford, Oral Roberts, Nevada, New Mexico State, Saint Mary s SCHEDULE COMPRESSION: Saturday s game will be the 14th of 15 contests played by Seattle University in the first 45 days of the 2010-11 season, meaning that the Redhawks will average playing one game within each three-day period. Seattle U will play 10 games away from home, including contests in the Eastern (Maryland, Virginia) and Mountain (Weber State) time zones, as well as a span of four games in five days at the end of November. After the Virginia game, Seattle U will have 10 days away from competition before the Jan. 2 contest at Pepperdine. Although the team plays four road games in a row in January, those games are spread out over 18 days, giving the players a chance to rest between games and properly prepare for the next contest. THE RELUCTANT WARRIOR: Aaron Broussard has emerged as one of the team s go-to players. He started the season with two double-doubles in the first three games, earning 10 points and 10 rebounds in the Maryland and Cal Poly contests. He helped Seattle U earn its first victory of the season with nine points, 12 rebounds, and four assists against Oregon State. He posted career-high scoring totals of 25 points against UC Irvine and 26 points against Navy, pulling down nine rebounds in each contest. Those performances helped put him on the All-Tournament Team at the UC Irvine subregional of the 2K Sports Classic Benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer. On Nov. 29, he hit the go-ahead three-pointer on his way to a 20-point, 12-rebound performance as SU defeated Montana State, 72-70. THE MAN IN THE MIDDLE: Alex Jones is the other senior from Phoenix giving the team some veteran leadership. He started the season by leading the Redhawks with 20 points at Maryland on Nov. 8. He contributed 10 points in the home opener against Cal Poly and 11 points in the Redhawks 8-80 victory over Oregon State. Jones took advantage of a favorable matchup against UC Irvine, finishing with 19 points, four rebounds, and two assists. Last week, he scored 1 points in back-to-back games against Montana State and at Portland State. Overall, he is averaging 10.1 points per game so far this season. FRESH FACES: Seattle University has depended on some new faces over the first third of the 2010-11 season. Sterling Carter got off to an impressive start, scoring at least 20 points in four straight games, starting with a 26-point performance against San Francisco on Nov. 12. Carter is currently second on the team in scoring with 1.4 points per game and is shooting 8.4 percent (-of-86) from behind the three-point line. Fellow freshman Mark McLaughlin has been one of the first players off the bench this season for the Redhawks, reaching double figures in scoring six times so far this year. He notched his first career doubledouble with 1 points and 1 rebounds against Navy on Nov. 21. Brandon Durham has emerged as a lowpost threat, hitting the first 11 field goal attempts he made at the NCAA Division I level. Averaging 15.7 minutes per game, Durham is averaging.5 points and.6 rebounds per game. Chad Rasmussen made the first start of his collegiate career Wednesday at Eastern Washington and is averaging 8.0 points per game in the last three contests, including a season high of 1 points Dec. 4 at Weber State. Fred Wilson played a solid game at Eastern Washington, finishing with four points and four rebounds. Taylor Stevens broke through against the Eagles with 11 points. STUFFING THE STAT SHEET: Senior guard Garrett Lever has been doing the little things to contribute to the team s effort so far this season. The son of former NBA player Fat Lever, he has earned.5 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 2. steals per game. Despite his height, Lever finds himself in the right places on the court, as he is currently second on the team in rebounding and leads the way in steals for the second straight season. He scored a season-high 11 points, plus he grabbed eight rebounds, at San Francisco on Nov. 12 and pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds at UC Irvine on Nov. 20. In the Nov. 17 victory over Oregon State, Lever added seven points and six rebounds to the winning effort. RECLASSIFICATION STATUS: The Seattle University athletics department is currently in Year Three of the reclassification process towards Division I membership. The process began with the NCAA Exploratory Year in 2007-08. The Redhawks are in the midst of four years in which they will count as a Division I school for scheduling purposes but, with the exception of men s soccer and women s soccer, the sports chosen for fasttrack status, will not be eligible for NCAA titles. ON THE RADIO: Every Seattle University men s basketball regular season game will be broadcast on 710 ESPN Seattle. For the second straight season, Dave Grosby and Gary Hill, Jr., will bring all the action to radio listeners on the same station that broadcasts the games of the Seattle Mariners and the Seattle Seahawks. The pregame show commences shortly before tipoff and includes an interview with head coach Cameron Dollar previewing that day s contest. SAGARIN SAYS: One of the tools experts use to try to predict results is the rankings system created by Jeff Sagarin. As of Dec. 16, San Jose State is ranked 172nd with a rating of 72.76, while Seattle U is 00th with a rating of 6.60. Taking into account a home advantage of 4.06, Sagarin would say that San Jose State should post a five-point victory Saturday. STATISTICALLY SPEAKING: Seattle University is scoring 72.5 points per game and giving up 80.5 points per contest.
