ultneyville Yacht Club Signals from the Commodore Here are some possible ingredients for a great story: the 2011 Commodore s Challenge, issued by MI Commodore Gary Borkhuis, hosted by MI, slated to be sailed on recision 23, eventually sailed on Catalina 22, skippered by yours truly and crewed by Fleet Captain Jon Flowerday and MI boat owner Mark Hager. We had a fabulous start, sailed into a hole and then well, there s always next year. Thanks to all who came out and on the water, too for the festivities. Special thanks to Steve Heffron and Bob Hamilton for their words of consolation. but, I trust, that the reasons for them will be clear. lease join me in offering congratulations and a helping hand on projects and events to the newly elected members of the Executive Committee, Treasurer, am Bray, Rear Commodore, Mark Laffin and Vice Commodore, Nancy Gong. I would also like to thank Robin Wilkinson, for offering the motion at the September meeting and Earl Chapman for agreeing to serve as Chair, for an ad hoc Committee which will look into the resource requirements and operations of the YC racing program. Jon Flowerday will serve on the Committee and as liaison with the Executive Committee. Larry Who knows? By the time we get to the Annual Banquet, Saturday November 5, this story and some of your own boating tales will have a life of their own. You ll just have to attend to find out. As those of you who were at the September General Meeting know, there are some other aspects to the Commodore s Challenge. At best, it is to serve the interests of the whole Club membership by standing with and behind the other members of the Executive Committee. Our decisions will not always be popular Activities This Month (& Beyond) Oct-08 Oct-15 Oct-22 9:00 AM Second Cradle Day 7:00 AM Second Haul-out Day 9:00 AM Fleet Captain Work Day Oct 2011 Nov-05 Dec-04 Evening Fall Banquet (Jack"s lace Durand Eastman Golf Course 1200 Kings Highway N 333 Rochester NY 14607) 1:00 M Annual General Membership Meeting; ultneyville Fire Hall www.ultneyvilleyachtclub.org

Notes from the Vice Commodore our club. We had a nice end to the month of September. Thanks to Diane Boesel,at and Steve"Beer Master"Sangster for all their help making Oktoberfest a successful event. It was fun spending time with our neighbors across the creek at MI. Thanks to everyone that came over to support our Commodore and October is another busy month we begin with our second Cradle Day on October 8th @9am. Then on October 15th is Secretary s Corner Hello YC members, lease welcome new members Amy and Scott Boesel. This brings our membership to 84 voting, 6 non-voting, 0 social and 2 MI reciprocal members. On September 20 I phoned into the International St. Lawrence Board of Control teleconference. The Board is expecting Lake Ontario water level to drop slightly below average through the Fall (see graph). The ISLRBC indicated that the IJC was on schedule to release a new regularity plan by the end of the year and hold public hearings next Spring. I will keep you posted as I receive more information. You can see the entire ISLRBC presentation at http:// ijc.org./conseil_board/islrbc/en/activities.htm. our second Haul Out@7am. Let's hope the weather is as nice as it was for first Haul Out. October 22nd is Fleet Captain Work day. See Jon's article for more information. lease save the date. Saturday November 5th @6pm @ Jack's lace in Durand Eastman ark, our Fall Banquet.. It is a beautiful place with plenty of room for all to come. Sure to be an enjoyable evening with great food and great friends. See attached flyer. Enjoy the rest of the season. See you at the club. Kathy On September 23 Ron Hilgert and myself meet with a representative of RG&E and NYSEG for an energy review. I want to thank Dave Weagley and Russ alum for taking time to come to the Club for the first meeting which did not occur, due to a schedule conflict. We came away from the meeting with a few lighting change suggestions but not much else. We will share these with the rest of the Executive Committee to see if we can save some money on our electrical bills as we make improvements around the Club. Last, for those members who could not attend the September general meeting, lease congratulate our new Vice Commodore, Nancy Gong; Rear Commodore, Mark Laffin; and Treasurer, amela Bray. Also I want to second Commodore Larry Rice s invitation that everyone come join us at this year s Fall Banquet. It should be a great time for everyone and a wonderful way to wrap up the season. Hope to see you at the Club Barry LAKE SOUNDINGS is published monthly for YC members, February through December. Notes from the Sail Bag It s that time of year again when we start putting away our boats, and unless you have a cruise to a warmer location planned this fall or winter saying goodbye to summer activities for a while. stand or walk under the lifting frame or a boat this being hauled, and where appropriate WEAR your hard hat.. The next event on the calendar is our second haul, scheduled for Saturday October 15 th. We will start at 7:00 AM sharp and hopefully will be able to complete the haul in one day. In preparation for the haul on the 15 th we will be moving and placing all of the remaining cradles on Saturday October 8 th at 9:00, and after they have been placed we will move the remaining picnic tables from the pavilion and install the remaining set of mast racks. Once haul is competed for the year we still need to remove the floating docks. This activity is scheduled for the Saturday after second haul: October 22nd. This date coincides with the Fleet Captains Workday so there will be lots to do for everyone that day and Jon and I can use all the help we can get. Just be there at 9:00 when we start. We hauled15 boats during early haul, and while this is always the slower and more difficult of the two hauls we did encounter a delay getting started. While the crane was delivered on Thursday the counterweights were not installed and the crane was not ready to lift boats until 9:00. While this delay is something we can live with during early haul it is not acceptable for our second haul. I will be talking the situation over with Clark Rigging to ensure we do not see this type of delay in October. For those members who were on time ready to go at 8:00 I apologize for the delay. We were fortunate in that we did not incur any injuries this year. But I still want to remind everyone to get help when taking on a task involving any rigging, don t The list of assignments for the second haul is included in this month s issue. lease check your assignment and shift and be there ready to go to work by the designated start time. lease check that you are on the list if you are hauling on October 15 th, and remember that your job ends when all the boats are hauled, the equipment is stored; not when your boat is hauled or when the crane is finished, please do your part to help complete the day. Also please remember that we may need you to move your boat from your current dock to a slip closer to the crane to be hauled to facilitate the most efficient use of the crane. If you can t or will not move your boat it is possible that we may not be able to haul you. So please think about this if you winterize your boat prior

Notes from the Sail Bag (cont d) to hauling. As a reminder, if you are using stands your stands must have pads under them and be chained together to prevent movement over the winter; in addition NO concrete blocks will be allowed. There is an extensive shoring policy in the Membership Log (see page 7.13-7.14) that will be strictly followed this year. The policy is for everyone s safety and if your equipment does not meet the policy we reserve the right to not haul your boat. I also would be remiss if I didn t remind those using cradles that these also need to be structurally sound and in good repair. If your cradle needs a little TLC please get this done before your haul day YC 2011 Second Haul Saturday, October 15, 2011 lease note that the second shift is scheduled to start at 11:30. Based on last year it is possible that we could start even earlier. lease consider arriving before your schedule time just in case. Ron Hilgert 7:00 AM FIRST SHIFT Crew Chief: T Belaskas Fork Lift:. Fleet Captain s Report Well it s that time of year again, not my favorite but we ll get through it! I am pretty happy with the turn out we had with the racing program this year but I still think we can improve on it. Really think hard about getting your non sailing or inactive sailing friends involved. We are building on a great program and need to keep the momentum. Looking forward to working with a committee to look at ways of improving our program further. Earl Chapman has agreed to chair this committee and I thank him. It s also that time of year when I am preparing all the Cups and Flags. Soon I ll be spending and evening with our Score Keeper sorting out all the data. There are two parts we need your help with, the cruising awards which are given to the ower Boat & Sailboat which have logged the most cruising miles this year. lease submit your Cruising Miles to me ASA to jonflowerday@gmail.com. It also appears that the last recipient of the Goody Two Shoes Award is not following tradition, so if anyone wants to dish out the fun contact me with your nominee. I would also like to extend a warm welcome to Scott & Amy Boesel & their 4 wonderful children, who have purchased a beautiful blue Laser 28 Chaos having a sister ship for andora in the harbour is fantastic, building a area fleet would be great too. With Chaos, andora, & Walkabout at BYC all actively racing and Class legal it would make sense that this is a boat making a comeback. There are many active Laser 28 s in the Ottawa & Montreal area with fleets as big as 18! There are several on the market right now and I have posted links to them on the YC facebook page. They are a major BANG for the buck boat! I also have been in contact with the Canadian Fleet and I am working on getting a good portion of them to make the trek to the south shore for either or both the SBYC Challenge Cup in June & LYRA which will be hosted by Oswego Yacht Club in July 2012. Enjoy your fall and we ll see you at Cups & Flags in November! Jon
