The Seminole Flyer Our Memorial Day Warbird Fly-in was a very special event in several ways. The most poignant was our club celebration of Bob Burke s 90 th birthday. Bob is our most active member. He is at the field almost every day of the year when weather permits. He is always ready to share in good natured give and take. He is loved by all. Charter member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics since 1969 AMA Charter Club 216 May 2016 Memorial Day Issue Happy Birthday Bob!!! It was especially fitting that we celebrated Bob s birthday during Memorial Day weekend. Bob is a U.S. Navy veteran of the Second World War. He was a Baker First Class stationed on Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands. Bob brought an impressive display of WWII memorabilia to enhance our special Memorial Day event. Bob may not be the longest active club member, but he may be the longest active RC hobbyist in the club. In the 1950s, modelers including Bob Burke, Albert Johnson, Bud Bauer, Warren White and Lester Durden, flew elementary RC and control line models at the construction site where the Tallahassee International Airport would be built. These Tallahassee model pioneers had to find other flying sites as construction on the new airport progressed. Tallahassee s Bob Burke celebrating with family and friends commercial airport moved to its current location from Dale Mabry Field in 1961. Dale Mabry was a WWII training field that was deeded to the city after the war. More About Our Memorial Day Many thanks to Vice President Randy Yarborough for his hard work planning and managing one of the best events that we have enjoyed in a long time. Besides celebrating Bob s birthday, we had food, displays of flags, military memorabilia and military planes, equipment sale, static and flying contests with a plethora of prizes and a really good time. We averaged 44 flyers, but it was impossible to keep up with the true number of participants as people continually arrived and left throughout the day. And, thanks to everyone who brought flags, displays, food and helped Bob eat his birthday cake. Bob asked that we express a heart-felt thank you from him to all of our members that came together to wish him a Happy Birthday. He was quite touched by the gesture.
