8 BOISE STATE

MEN S GOLF 9 One of the most accomplished golfers to come out of the Treasure Valley, Kevin Burton is in his ninth season as head coach of the Boise State men s golf team. A former touring professional on the PGA Tour, Burton joined the Broncos prior to the 2005-06 season. Since his arrival, the Broncos have captured multiple team titles, the first non-hosted victories since capturing the Big Sky Conference Championship during the 1995-96 season. Included was a victory at the Utah Invitational earlier this season. The Broncos rallied from six strokes down in the final round to win the tournament by 10 strokes. The deficit was the largest overcome en route to a victory in school history, and the winning margin was the largest since winning the Bronco Spring Invitational by 15 strokes, April 3-4, 1995. Boise State spent Burton s first six seasons challenging for the Western Athletic Conference Championship twice finishing in the top three and now, in the team s third season in a new league, are looking to do the same in the Mountain West. Burton has helped Boise State produce two of the most decorated golfers in school history, Graham DeLaet and Troy Merritt. Each is currently playing on the PGA TOUR, and DeLaet has climbed into the top 30 of the World Golf Rankings. DeLaet was the top money winner on the Canadian Tour in 2009, and Merritt spent 2009 on the PGA s Nationwide Tour, where he ranked amongst the top 30 in earnings. He won the Q-School Qualifying Tournament in 2009, earning his PGA Tour card. DeLaet, a three-time all-conference honoree, and Merritt, a two-time All-WAC performer, rank first and second, respectively, in career victories and career top-10 finishes. Merritt won the 2008 WAC Championship and was named Boise State s first GCAA All-American. Each was named WAC Golfer of the Year and advanced to the NCAA Regional Championship. In all, Burton has helped six different golfers earn six first- or second-team all-conference accolades. Burton s Broncos have also performed well in the classroom, earning CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District, GCAA All-American Scholar and academic all-conference accolades. Prior to his coaching career, Burton played on the PGA TOUR during the 1997 season. He also played on the Australian PGA TOUR (1988-90) and the Nike Tour (now the Web.com Tour) in 1996 and 2001. A six-time Rocky Mountain Section PGA Player of the Year (2002-04; 2006-08), Burton was a member of the PGA Cup Team in 2000 and captured the Western PGA Club Professional Championship in 2002 and 2004. He is also a three-time winner of the Rocky Mountain Section PGA Championship (2002, 2003 and 2008), a two-time winner of the Snake River Championship (2004 and 2006), a four-time winner of the Idaho Open (1999, 2002, 2003 and 2008) and the 1995 California Open champion. He also finished second at the 1995 Albertson s Boise Open. He still plays professionally, competing in the PGA Club Professional National Championship. He has played in the event several times, finishing as high as tied for third (2003). He finished fifth in the country in Player of the Year points for PGA Club Professionals in 2003. In addition to serving as the one-time club professional at Plantation, Burton has also served as a teaching professional at BanBury Golf Club in Eagle, Idaho, and spent time as the head professional at Pierce Park Greens in Boise and at the Redhawk Golf Club in Temecula, Calif. A Boise native, Burton graduated from Boise High School before attending Idaho. He played four years for the Vandals, and earned his bachelor s degree in computer science in 1986. He and wife Amy have two children, daughter Ali and son Cal.

10 BOISE STATE A former touring professional, Ryan Hietala is in his second season as an assistant coach with the Boise State men s golf team. Hietala competed on the PGA TOUR from 2005-06, competing in 23 tournaments while holding full exempt status. Hietala is also currently competing on the Web.com Tour, ranking ninth in driving distance in 2012 and finishing 13th at the 2012 Pacific Rubiales Colombia Championship. He has more than 230 starts on tour, making more than a half million dollars and capturing championships at the 2005 Chitimacha Louisiana Open and the 2008 Cox Classic. Hietala has also recorded seven top-10 finishes during his career on the Web.com Tour, and has 22 top 25s. He has finished in the top 35 of the Web.com Tour money list twice during his career, and has also played on the Canadian Tour, the Tight Lies Tour and the Golden Bear Tour. Hietala worked as an assistant at the Jim McLean Golf School from 2010-11, one of the nation s premier golf academies, and has also worked at Falcon Crest Golf Club and Shadow Valley Golf Course. A four-year letterwinner at UTEP, Hietala was a four-time all-conference selection and the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year in 1995. The first-team All-American captured medalist honors five times during his collegiate career, and tied for first at the 1995 WAC Championships. Hietala is married to the former Jennifer Hedberg, who competed for the Boise State women s golf team. The two have a daughter named Izabella.

39 BRONCO HISTORY Alumni BOISE STATE FROM BOISE TO THE PROS... After record-setting collegiate careers at Boise State University, Graham DeLaet and Troy Merritt have gone on to succeed at the professional level. GRAHAM DELAET (2001-06) DeLaet has climbed into the top 30 of the World Golf Rankings, and fi nished eighth in the FedExCup Standings in 2013. He is the fi rst Bronco to play in the British Open and the PGA Championship, and later this year will become the fi rst to play in the Masters. DeLaet fi nished No. 1 on the Canadian Tour in 2009 - earning Player of the Year honors - before playing his fi rst full season on the PGA TOUR in 2010. He has earned more than $6.5 million on tour, recording several top-10 and top-25 fi nishes. TROY MERRITT (2006-08) Merritt won the 2009 PGA TOUR Qualifying Tournament, earning his card for the 2010 season. He became one of just three players since 1992 to hold at least a share of the lead after each of the event s six rounds (Scott Verplank, 1997; Frank Lickliter II, 2007). In his fi rst full season on tour, he recorded a top-10 fi nish and four top 25s. Included was a third-place effort at the 2010 Zurich Classic of New Orleans. He went on to capture the $1 million Kodak Challenge in 2010, securing his card for the 2011 season, and is playing on the PGA TOUR again in 2014.
