Greater Phoenix Orienteering Club - Getting There is ALL the Fun! We have a LOT of activities planned for January, so a bigger-than-usual newsletter this time.. In addition to the GPHXO evens listed here, The San Diego Orienteering Club is holding their Anza-Borrego even Jan 6-7 - gphxo.org has a link to details. Sat Jan 13: Beginner s Clinic & Sprints Starting at 9 am at our Robbins Butte site west of Buckeye, we ll conduct a FREE Beginner s Clinic plus two Sprint Course events. Pre-registration encouraged but not required. Sun Jan 14: 2 Hour Score-O Sun Feb 25: OUSA National Ranking Event - First Water Our FIRST EVER Nationally Sanctioned event, and the final event of the GPHXO/Tucson O Southwest Spring Week. GPHXO will host a Night-O event on the 24th. Watch our website for details on these events. Sunday at Robbins Butte, we will hast a Score-O event. (choose your own route, score points for each control you find). Course opens at 9 am. Preregistration encouraged but not required. Sat Jan 20: GPHXO General Meeting Club members are invited to our General Meeting at Boulders on Broadway in Tempe. Come for FREE PIZZA and learn about club business & status. Sun Jan 28: Bomboy Mine Score-O 2-Hour Score-O event at Bomboy Mine, east of Apache Junction Course opens at 9 am. Preregistration encouraged but not required. Available for rent at Phoenix events for $1) Water. Available at some events, but always good to bring your own. Sun screen. Sturdy hiking shoes and long pants are recommended. You may encounter cactus, cat claw, and loose terrain. PreRegistration Pre-registering helps us plan events and know how many maps to prepare - and it saves you some on the registration fees for events. For the events in this month s newsletter, pre-registration is encouraged (but not required) - but to make sure we have a map for you, please sign up in advance. Links to pre-register for each event appear on the event pages at: http://www.gphxo.org/ Parental Consent (under 18) All participants under age 18 are now required to have a signed parental consent form on file with the club. You can complete the form before the event and either scan it and send it to us by e-mail or bring it with you to the event. Costs (Robbins Butte, Bomboy Mine events) Costs: Pre-Registration Member - Individual/Team... $5 / $8 Non Member... $10 / $15 Onsite Registration Member - Individual / Team... $10 / $15 Non Member... $15 / $20 Fees are collected onsite. If you pre-register but then can t make it, you don t have to pay. The Beginner s Clinic at Robbins Butte is FREE for all. Recent Event Results Coon Bluff Night-O, Dec 9 Top Score-O finishers were Scott Whiting, Ron Birks, Kevin Adams, Chupacabros (top Team) and Swole Bros. B. Brooke Mann led the female finishers. We had 25 total participants for the event. Thank you to Gary Hickey for planning the event and to Ron Birks for helping tabulate the results. Saguaro Lake Score-O, Dec 10 Top Score-O finishers were Scott Whitney, Dan White, Kyle Seifullin, Ron Birks and Mike Zampino. Top Team was the Revenants, and top female finisher was B. Brooke Mann. We had 40 total participants for the event. Thank you to Derrick Beracy for planning the event, and to Ron Birks, Andy Wentzel, Dan Yamashiro and Rob Ehlers for assisting. GPHXO Newsletter Pg 3 Jan 2018 Saturday January 13 - Beginner s Clinic and Sprint Events Starting at 9:00, we'll conduct a beginner's training to introduce basic land navigation concepts used in orienteering. We'll continue the morning with two sprint courses at the same site. You're welcome to participate in one or all of the morning's events. Check-In / Registration Starts... 8:30am Clinic... 9 am Registration for Sprints... 9:30 am Sprint Courses Open... 10 am Last Sprint Course start time... noon Sprint Courses Close... 1 pm Registration / Costs. The Beginner s Clinic is free. The Sprint Courses are our standard pricing (see pg. 2). The fee covers both Sprints. The pre-registration deadline is Wednesday January 10, 11:59 pm (so you have all day January 10 to preregister). Sunday January 14 - Robbins Butte 2-Hour Score-O The terrain is a mixture of rocky outcroppings and flat desert. Due to the relatively flat terrain and sparse vegetation, crosscountry travel is friendlier than on some of our other maps. There are very few areas of dense cactus or catclaw. On most parts of the map, terrain visibility is also excellent. Water is available at the timer's table. People of all skill levels are encouraged to participate. If you're new to the sport, we're offering a free beginner's clinic on Saturday. Registration Starts... 8:30 am Courses Open... 9 am Last start time... 11 am Course Closes... 1 pm Participants marked DNF after... 1:30 pm Registration / Costs Pre-registration is encouraged, but not required; there is a link to pre-register on the event page at gphxo.org. Event costs are our standard costs (see pg. 2). Pre-registration deadline is Wednesday January 10, 11:59 pm. Directions: Phoenix to Robbins Butte To get to the Robbins Butte Event Site from Phoenix: Travel west on Interstate-10 to exit 112. Take exit 112. The exit sign indicates "AZ85 to I-8, Yuma, San Diego". Proceed south on AZ Highway 85 for about 7 miles to milepost 147 (south of the Gila River bridge). Turn right (west) at the sign for Robbins Butte Wildlife Area. Continue approximately 3.8 miles on a dirt road. Keep left when you arrive at a sign indicating "Robbins Butte Wildlife Area & access to Robbins Butte". The road is a little bumpy but passable to passenger cars. Arrive at the Robbins Butte event parking and start/finish line on the south side of the road just south-east of Robbins Butte. (N33 18.8384' W112 40.8891 WGS-84). Directions: Tucson to Robbins Butte Take Interstate-8 West from Casa Grande to Gila Bend exit 119. The exit sign indicates "To AZ85 I-10, Butterfield Trail". Proceed north on AZ Highway 85 for about 27 miles to a point just before milepost 147 (before the Gila River bridge). Turn left (west) at the sign for Robbins Butte Wildlife Area. Continue approximately 3.8 miles on a dirt road. Keep left when you arrive at a sign indicating "Robbins Butte Wildlife Area & access to Robbins Butte". The road is a little bumpy but passable to passenger cars. Arrive at the Robbins Butte event parking and start/finish line on the south side of the road just south-east of Robbins Butte. GPHXO Newsletter Pg 4 Jan 2018 Saturday Jan 20 - GPHXO General Meeting - Boulders on Broadway in Tempe Our General Club meeting will take place at the Boulders on Broadway restaurant in Tempe, starting at 6 pm. Come on out and meet some of the names you see in the officers lists and event results pages! We will take care of some club business at the meeting, but this is mostly a social event. Even if you are not an official club member, you are welcome to join us. We have reserved the upstairs meeting room at Boulders on Broadway in Tempe from 6 pm to 8 pm. The club will pay for salad, pizza and soft drinks; you re on your own for beer or other beverages. Registration / Costs Are we doing any sort of preregistration for this??? Directions Boulders on Broadway is located at 530 West Broadway Road Tempe, Arizona 85282 (there is also a Mesa location, but we will be at the Tempe location). The restaurant is on the northeast corner of Broadway and Roosevelt. There is a small sign, but it s not real well marked Additional directions & details for all events are on the GPHXO.org website Sunday Jan 28 - Bomboy Mine 2-HourScore-O Our Bomboy Mine event site is approximately 30 miles east of Apache Junction, near the Boyce Thompson Arboretum. The site is nestled in the foothills of the Superstition Mountains and contains a good deal of rugged terrain and desert vegetation. If you're new to the sport, we'd be happy to give you some pointers before you begin. You may start the Score-O anytime after the course opens at 9:00 am until 11:00 am. Everyone must be off the course by 1:30 pm or be marked DNF. Registration Starts... 8:30 am Course Opens... 9 am Last Start Time... 11 am Courses Close... 1 pm Marked DNF after... 1:30 pm Registration / Costs Preregistration is encouraged but not required. To preregister, follow the link from the Bomboy Mine event page, linked from the GPHXO home page. Costs are our standard event costs, see page 2 of this newsletter. Directions Take the Superstition Freeway (US 60) east through Apache Junction, towards Globe. About.4 miles past milepost 222 and immediately after crossing the Queen Creek bridge, turn left onto Hewitt Station Rd (Forest Road 357). If you reach the Boyce Thompson Arboretum you have gone a half mile too far! Cross the cattle guard and continue straight. After about 1.5 miles on FR357, you will cross a wash with two 15 foot high drainage pipes under the railroad tracks on the right. Continue 0.2 miles past the wash, then turn right on to FR 252. The event site is about ¾ mile down the road, at a road junction. Look for an orange and white orienteering bag or orange cone at the last turnoff and at our site.
