Dear Parents, As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, I wanted to share my sincere gratitude for the opportunity to get to know all of our STAR families better as we embrace educating the next generation of faith-filled leaders. Your commitment and sacrifice to send your children here are both noticed and appreciated! The volunteer hours you put forth to support our school is what makes our school feel like family. Thank you for making Star of the Sea so special! Education is a commitment between the home and the school, and we are blessed to have such a strong partnership while we educate the whole child; spiritually, physically, academically and socially. Sincere thanks to all parents, grandparents, and friends of our star school by the sea! Wishing you all many blessings, Carey Averill, Principal LAST CALL! FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 17th (School dress down guidelines apply). Each summer Star of the Sea Parish partners with St. Charles in Cape Charles to reach out to the migrant farm workers (500+ people) on the Eastern Shore and welcome them to our area. Once a week, volunteers drive over to visit and learn, share gifts and help try to make their lives a bit more tolerable under the conditions that they live in. Most of the workers are Spanish-speaking farmers primarily from Mexico that travel the southeastern United States to work on the farms. They are mainly young men between the ages of 18 through their mid 30's. There are some families with women and children, and some older men as well. Some of these workers have been separated from their families for months to a few years at a time. They are bussed up to the Eastern Shore and work on some potato, but mostly tomato farms. They work long hours under the hot, summer sun, picking produce and carrying buckets back and forth. If they miss a day of work because of rain, they will work longer hours to make up for it, and even work on Sundays if they need to. Sundays are usually their only days off and are set aside for laundry and grocery shopping. Since most of them don't have cars, the bus driver will drive them to take care of their errands. Unfortunately, that doesn't include driving them to church, so it is always appreciated when one of the priests in the area visit and celebrate Mass with them. The workers live in concrete buildings where they share rooms that provide mattresses and a common bathroom with showers. The camps do not have air condition or fans, although some rooms do have window unites, of which some work and some don't. It is a difficult and humble way of life, and can be quite lonely for them. They work hard in the summer heat to make a better life for themselves and their families. The workers are always so grateful for our visits with them, and are touched by the sincere concern for them, their well-being, both physically and spiritually. Your prayers and support for the migrant workers, their families, the farm owners and the Migrant Ministry are greatly appreciated.
