Jason Motte, Justin Grimm, Pedro Strop and Hector Rondon each tossed a scoreless inning after starter Kyle Hendricks allowed three runs in 5.0 innings. Chris Coghlan hit his fourth homer in his last six games, a game-tying solo shot in the first inning Miguel Montero belted a game-winning RBI double in the sixth while Anthony Rizzo added a seventh-inning RBI single. ABOUT THE ARMS: Jason Motte yesterday improved to 8-1, and has the most relief victories in the majors this season the eight relief wins are the most by a Cub since Jeff Samardzija had eight in 2011 the last Cubs reliever with more victories in a season was Lee Smith, who had nine wins in 1986. Justin Grimm enters today with a 13.0-inning scoreless streak, the sixth-longest current streak in the National League Travis Wood has not allowed a home run in his last 41.0 innings dating to May 31 vs. Kansas City that is the eighth-longest active stretch in the Senior Circuit. Cubs pitchers have struck out eight or more batters in 12-straight games, the longest streak in the majors this season Chicago last had a longer stretch with at least eight strikeouts in consecutive games back in September of 2004, going 18-straight games then. QUITE AN OPENING ACT: Kris Bryant, who homered on Wednesday, has 17 home runs this season those are the most by any Cub in his first big league season, surpassing Mandy Brooks 14 long balls in 1925 Bryant s 17 long balls are second-most among rookies this season, trailing only the Dodgers Joc Pederson (23) they are the most homers by a Cubs rookie since Tyler Colvin hit 20 in 2010. Bryant this season has three hitting streaks of at least 12 games he is the first Cub to record three hitting streaks of at least 12 games in a season since Ron Santo did so in 1966 Bryant is the first Cubs rookie to accomplish the feat since at least 1921. 55-55: Anthony Rizzo has 60 walks and 56 extra-base hits (30 doubles, two triples, 24 homers) to join Bryce Harper and Mike Trout as the only three major league players to reach 55 walks and 55 extra-base hits this season. Anthony ranks fourth in the N.L. with a.402 on-base percentage and a.939 OPS, and sixth with a.537 slugging mark his 30 doubles rank tied for third in the N.L. (Todd Frazier leads with 34 doubles). HAVING A BLAST: Anthony Rizzo has 24 homers this season, and has reached 20 homers for the third-straight year he is the first Cubs left-handed hitter to reach 20 homers in three-straight years since Leon Durham s four-year run from 1984-87 in the last 55 years, Billy Williams is the only other Cubs lefty to turn the trick, as he did so in 13-straight years from 1961-73.
