auction, a live auction, door prizes, and a raffle. Auction items were going as low as fifty cents on a dollar and some of those were $5000-$6000 items. Above all else the food was excellent and the company at the table was great! Barbara and I went and had a very enjoyable evening. I propose next year HDSA purchase a table for ten (at least). It is a great way to support our right to fish and share in the camaraderie of sport fishing in California. Jim CLUB POINTS EARNED FOR 2002 Place Name Points Membership Anniversaries. I am really excited about what we have scheduled for the rest of 2002 and I want you to be aware so you can plan and not be left out. We have a GREAT line-up of Guest Speakers scheduled: May Ranaye Myers Ocean Sports Adventures June Mike Gardner Sport Fishing Guide Service July Lewis Kenrick Oceanus Adventures August Sharon Smitty Smitty s Belts September Steve Gustlin All American Roller Guides October TBD November Barry Brightenburg Fish Trap Lures We have great trips and events scheduled. Last but not least Jerrol Kinsey is now working with Tom Raftican to get the UA Charter Club on the right path to completion. Last note if you read the HDSA Alert you should have noticed the offer from Ocean Sport Adventures. Make sure you take the time to read this. I think this is great! I am going and look forward to seeing other HDSA members on this trip. Tight lines, Jim Saltwater Gazette 3

Message from the President John Nutt What a GREAT time we had at the Apollo Park Kid s Fishing Derby. I want to thank those volunteers: Craig Davis, Steve Jones, Jim Allen, Jerrol Kinsey, and Steve Connor. Ask any of them if they had a good time and I m sure the answer will be YES! It was a beautiful day, the kids were having fun, the parents behaved, and the fish (8000 lbs stock) were biting. I needed six club members and the club membership rose to the occasion, THANKS. The next kid s fishing trip, on June 21, is moving forward. We have our five volunteers: Craig Davis, Jerrol Kinsey, Fred Erickson, Dave Dunbabin, and myself. If the Kid s Derby is any indication of how this is going to be, it will be fun. Again, thanks for volunteering. This volunteer thing is breaking out all over. Sharon Erickson is taking the lead, with the help of Bill Kriete, on our June 15 Second Annual Fishing Cook Off. Last year this was a very nice afternoon, no meetings, just gabbing, eating, and enjoying life. Put it on your calendar and come on out. You don t have to compete in the cooking, just bring your appetite and your favorite adult libation (the club will bring soda and water). And what s this I hear from Boyd the May 31st trip is sold out and the June 21st has nine spots left? You folks must be waking up from your long winter naps. These sell outs should be a warning to get your name and money down or you may end up on the waiting list. In case you didn t know, we are giving away a Tuna trip in this month s raffle. Just think, for $5 you could go fishing. That kind of savings really helps your fishing budget. Also, next month we are trying something a little different. We are giving away a $300 gift certificate to Turner s Outdoors. I know that may seem odd but on our club survey it had a big thumbs up. So, if you need fishing, camping, or hunting gear, this would be a nice win. Since our meetings have been a bit light on members, we thought we would try a little extra enticement. The 50/50 will have not only the wonderful items that Shopper Extraordinaire Fred buys, and the sponsor tackle shops supply us with, but also a $50 club credit. That s one heck of a return on a 50 ticket. Just think, show up, buy a 50/50 ticket, and you could win a $50 club credit. Or show up, buy a monthly raffle ticket, and win a fishing trip. Or just show up and find out what s going on in YOUR club and listen to an interesting speaker. Let s go fishing! John Saltwater Gazette 4

OCEAN SPORTS Adventures Good Afternoon to the Ventura County Sports Fishing club* After several conservations with Brian Zimmerman we decided that it would be easier for us to send an email to you with all of the information on our newest venture with the Iron Eagle and introduce you to our Mothership Fishing Charters in California. As you can see by the brochure that we have attached, we take what has been known for years in Baja as Mothership charters and bring it to you here in California. No more cattle boats! And the freedom to really get out on the ocean and fish it in areas you may not be able to readily get to. As an introduction to your club members we wanted to offer your group a great deal on our first and second 3-day trips this season. Each of the trips includes food, fuel and bait and this trip normally retails for 395.00. We have two weekends available to your group, May 31 to June 2 and June 7 to June 9 where we would like to extend the following offer: For the first 25 guests that sign up for either weekend we will give you each spot for only 200.00 and for the next 25 we will give you either weekend at 300.00. Please let me know if you have any questions on either of our trips or out upcoming Baja Mothership Fishing Trips. As we would love to include you as we start out the fishing season.
