Ulmstead Swim Team BIG THANKS TO A FEW OF OUR VOLUNTEERS!! May 22, 2013 Volume 2, Issue 1 Jerilyn It is amazing that you have continued to stay involved and volunteer your time when there are SO many other things that need attention! Susie and Emily Thank you for researching and developing a merchandising plan for this season! Katy and Susan Thank you for your time and effort planning all things concessions! Cindi and Julie Thank you for your time and willingness to help develop new systems for our Volunteer group. Pam Thank you for your willingness to make our website and system the best it has ever been! You are AWESOME! Rob Thank you for your time in helping us develop a budget and keeping us in line!! Inside this issue: We re Ready..Are you??? 1 Big Duck Little Duck 2 Fins for a Cure 2 Time Trials 2 Volunteer News 4 Merchandising News 4 Concessions News 4 Coaches Corner 5 Fins for sale 5 Team Pictures 6 Suggestions 6 Upcoming Dates 6 Who s Who & Duck Jokes 7 h Countless hours of time have already been spent working hard to prepare for our season which is RIGHT around the corner! We are so excited to get started! Julie and Cindi are hard at work scouring your schedules and your choice of volunteer positions to put together an efficient volunteer season. They will be publishing training dates for Stroke and Turn and Starter positions, so if you would like to learn more about the legalities of each stroke, please let them know you would like to attend the training. Who knows.. maybe next year you ll want to help out in one of those positions? ;) Emily and Susie have also worked hard to find awesome duck gear for your family!! Really, who wants to wake up that early and worry about fashion at a swim meet just wear your team t-shirt to sup- port your kids and the team!! Katy and Susan are dreaming of walking tacos as they prepare for a tasty concessions season. We only have two home meets this season, so make sure you don t miss a chance to enjoy the swim meet favorites! (Colleen, we know your mouth is watering ) Pam has been behind the scenes making sure that you all had a seamless online registration experience and that we all have NEW tools to make being part of the team as easy and enjoyable as possible check out the new online Sign Out Book too!! Rob has also been working diligently to keep track of our funds, manage our budget and keep us moving in a positive financial direction! We are so excited to begin the season! Swimmers...take your mark

THIS IS HOW BIG DUCK-LITTLE DUCK WILL WORK: We have already mentioned that this program will work differently this year. Most of our activities will center around community type events. We will be holding a Team Pancake breakfast, BDld relay races, and pep rally! We will have items available like tattoos, or small trinkets that we will equip our older swimmers with at the beginning of each meet. Older swimmers will be given just a few items to use to recognize younger swimmers during the course of the meet. Older swimmers should look for younger swimmers cheering, accomplishing a difficult swim, or any little duck that is showing general spirit and good sportsmanship. They should be sure to give the item to a little duck who has not yet received one at the current meet or a past meet. In this way we hope to have each little duck recognized by a big duck at some point during the meet/season. This is in addition to the events that are being organized to bring the whole team together big ducks working with little ducks! "The water is your friend...you don't have to fight with water, just share the same spirit as See our flyer on the opposite page! Please register at www.swimacrossamerica.org/fins to participate with all of your Ulmstead friends and neighbors. I m sure most of us know someone that has been affected by this horrible disease. Every effort to help fight cancer matters please be a part of this one! the water, and it will help you move". Alexander Popov Page 2 Our coaches have determined that the best practice days to do some time trials will be Tuesday, June 4th and Wednesday, June 5th. Please plan to have your child to practice on time so that they may go into the first swim meet placed in the appropriate heat. It is important for planning purposes, but also for the swimmers they feel better about their personal swim if they are placed with other swimmers that have similar times. The coaches will also be looking for parent volunteers to help out that day and help time the kids. So please plan on being available to help time our swimmers during a practice.

We are still looking for Teens for Hire! If you are not part of the swim team but would like to submit your name to be hired for a non-trained position during a swim meet, please email volunteers@ulmsteadswimtea m.org. Mark your calendars for the Bay Hills Pep Rally on June 14th after the last day of school party at the pool! Also, work up your appetite for our FIRST EVER Team Pancake Breakfast on June 17th (time to be announced)!! Practiceshmactice, let s have some fun! We ll have relay races and some fun things to do! People coordinating these events will be looking for some helping hands during the events! Volunteer Assignments we are working on these and will be posting them very soon so that you may put them on your calendar and By Julie & Cindi make necessary arrangements! If you have any questions or would like to offer help in advance with any of the events you see here, please email volunteers@ulmsteadswimtea m.org. Volume 2, Issue 1 "I concentrate on preparing to swim my race and let the other swimmers think about me, not me about them." Amanda Beard SWIM SUIT TRY-ON When: June 6th from 3:30-6pm Metro Swim Shop will have team suits, practice suits, fins, goggles, swim bags, pool care shampoo & conditioner, etc. Metro accepts cash, check, and credit cards (NOT AmEx). Susie will also have some items for sale from past years! There will be a limited supply of new shirts on sale from this season. They will be gone fast, so act quickly if you missed out on preordering yours! The team is in need of pull buoys!! Metro will be bringing 20 for us to purchase during swim suit try-on. Please consider buying one to donate to our team!! They cost $5.95 each! By Susie & Emily Merchandising will also have available a limited number of our stopwatches for sale for a mere $5.00! If you would like to have on hand your very own stopwatch for running, swimming, any of your timing needs, please buy one of these. All proceeds benefit the swim team. We are trying to switch out our stopwatches for newer, easier to use models. We are getting our shopping lists together and thinking up some yummy items for concessions this year! By Katy & Susan Mmmmm. Katy and Susan Concessions Page 4

Volume 2, Issue 1 We are putting together an effective and fun training program for our team! We are so excited to see everyone and start the season with a bang! Remember, practice doesn t make perfect.. perfect practice makes perfect! We can t help you if you don t show up, so please be sure to attend as many practices as you can and be willing to learn! Also, we want to mention that although fins will be a required part of your practice gear, we will not be using them the first week of practice. All swimmers should already be able to swim the length of the pool without fins. Please keep in mind that swim team is not swim lessons, so if your swimmer is having trouble at this level, we will be offering a private group lesson for those ducklings. Times and fees for these lessons will be announced. We want to be sure all swimmers have a safe and fun swim team experience!! We ll be looking to welcome back our returning swimmers as well as greet and welcome our brand new swimmers to the team! We can t wait to see all of our ducks on Tuesday, May 28th for our first practice of the season! It s going to be an awesome summer at the pool! GO DUCKS!!! Your coaches, Colleen and Nicole "Practice is 90% physical-10% mental. Championship meets are 10% physical-90% mental. Author Unknown One of the most effective things you can do for yourself when swimming is to remember to exhale while you are swimming! If you have a younger swimmer, remind them to look up at the sky to breathe in, and blow bubbles down below in the water. Anyone like the idea of getting a pair of fins for $5.00???? Since it is required to have fins for swim team, we thought it would be great for everyone if we organized a fin sale. Here s how it works: if you HAVE fins that no longer fit, bring them to swimsuit try on. Put an envelope with your family name on it with $5.00 written on the envelope (we re suggesting $5.00 if you want them to sell, but if you think more or less, go for it!). Band the envelope to the fins and place on the merchandising table that we will have available. If you NEED fins, check out what people are selling, and if they fit put the amount they are asking in their envelope and give the envelope to merchandising or place directly into the Family Folder Box. (Family Folder Box is something new we will show you on the first day of practice!) Enjoy your fins and put the money you saved into some extra food and drink at concessions!! :) Page 5

Volume 2, Issue 1 We are still hoping to find someone who might want to help with a team picture and/or group pictures. These are great memories to accompany your plaques and so fun to look at years later! If you are interested in working on this project, please email director@ulmsteadswimteam.org We want you to know that many of the changes this year, were born out of suggestions from committee members and swim team families from last year! We welcome all suggestions and comments, please feel free to email us if you would like to comment on any topic in this newsletter, or you have ANY suggestions for our swim team. If they are things that will need more time to implement, we will certainly stick a pin in it for next year! Thank you for taking the time to read our newsletter!
