ABOUT THE LAST ONE: The Mudcats scored seven or more runs in a game for the third straight game after defeating the Hillcats 14-6 last night in Lynchburg. The streak of three straight with at least seven runs scored in a game is the first for the Mudcats this season. They previously had scored six or more in back-to-back games just one other time this year (6/5, 6/6). Carolina has scored six or more runs in a game 10 times this season and is 8-2 when scoring six plus. ON TO THE NEXT ONE: The Mudcats continue a three-day road trip in Lynchburg tonight with a doubleheader and games two and three of a four game series against the Hillcats at City Stadium. The Mudcats won last night 14-6 and are 5-6 against the Hillcats this season. The Mudcats enter tonight s game at 27-34 this season and in third place in the Carolina League Southern Division Standings. The Hillcats are 40-23 and clinched the Northern Division First Half Championship on Sunday with a 3-2 home victory against Myrtle Beach. It was Lynchburg s second straight half championship (2015 Second Half Champions). STARTING OFF: Ryan Clark and Zack Bird will start for the Mudcats in games one and two of tonight s doubleheader in Lynchburg. Clark is 0-7 with a 5.85 ERA this season and last pitched on 6/9 at home against the Dash. He turned in his third straight quality start his last time out (6.0ip, 4h, 3r, 3er, 1hr, 1bb, 2so), but suffered his fourth straight loss after Winston-Salem defeated Carolina 3-2. Clark is currently tied for the Carolina League lead in losses (7) and leads the league in most runs allowed (44). Bird has appeared in 16 games out of the bullpen this season and will make his first start of the season tonight. He is 2-1 and has pitched to a 7.61 ERA this season over 23.2 innings pitched. MASHING MENESES: Joey Meneses was 4-for-5 with two doubles, a home run and a career high five RBI last night. HEATING UP: Stephen Gaylor has hit safely in four straight games and is batting.526/.550/.526 (10-for-19, 7r, 1bb, 2sb) during the streak and since returning from a short stint with Triple-A Gwinnett on 6/10 Joseph Odom has hit safely in nine straight games and is 13-for-38 with three doubles, three home runs and 11 RBI (.342/.350/.658) during the streak. Povse finished the first week of play in 2016 at 1-0 over two starts and pitched to a 0.00 ERA. At the time of the announcement, Povse led the Carolina League in earned run average, WHIP (0.46) and batting average against (.098). He was also second in strikeouts with 14 and third in lowest walks per nine innings pitched (1.38). ELEVEN STRAIGHT GOOSE EGGS: Starter Max Povse and relievers Evan Phillips and Raymar Navarro combined on an 11-inning shutout in game one of a doubleheader in Salem on April 10 against the Red Sox. It was the first shutout tossed by the Carolina pitching staff this season. Mudcats pitchers managed to shutout an opponent 12 times last season. Those 12 shutouts were the third most in the Carolina League in 2015. HIGH QUALITY: Starters Max Povse, Ryan Clark, Enderson Franco, Ryan Lawlor and Matt Withrow combined to turn in five consecutive quality starts over between April 26 and May 1. Povse, Clark, Franco, Lawlor and Withrow have combined to go 3-0 with a 1.97 ERA over those five games (32.0ip, 21h, 9r, 7er, 6bb, 21so,.179 avg.). Mudcats starter had totaled just three quality before the streak, with all three being turned in by Povse. SPARTANS IN THE ROTATION: Starting pitchers Max Povse and Ryan Clark were college teammates in 2013 and 2014 while with the UNC Greensboro Spartans. The Braves drafted them in the 2014 and 2015 MLB drafts respectively. Povse went in the third round of the 2014 MLB draft and Clark was taken in the fifth round of last year s draft. Povse was second-highest draft pick in school history and was 6-4 with a 4.99 ERA as a junior during his final season with the Spartans. Clark was 7-6 with 4.06 ERA during final year (junior season) with UNC Greensboro in 2015. DOUBLE DIGITS: Max Povse struck out a career high 10 batters over just 5.0 innings pitched on 5/27 vs. the Frederick Keys at Five County Stadium and became the 53 rd starting pitcher in Carolina Mudcats history (1991-present) to strike out at least 10 batters in a start.
