Summer Camp Iowa 4-H is a youth development program with more than 100 years of experience fostering positive life skills in Iowa youth. The Iowa 4-H Center was created in 1950 to give campers a fun and educational outdoor learning environment over its 1,100 acre estate in the heart of the Des Moines River Valley. 4-H camp offers the opportunity for supervised independence to gain self-confidence and leadership skills, a sense of belonging with a caring group while making lifelong friends, a spirit of generosity towards others, and a wide variety of opportunities to master new skills and discover nature. The Iowa 4-H Center follows the motto of learning by doing, and draws on the knowledge base of Iowa State University and competent professional and student staff. Wilderness Trips If you re 14-18 years old, in good health, enjoy challenging yourself, and love camping and the outdoors, then one of these wilderness trips may be your next adventure! These are unique opportunities that combine wilderness travel, outdoor skill development, teamwork, environmental learning, and personal growth. They are led by trained volunteer adults, usually teachers and naturalists, who bring special skills and knowledge to the experience. Previous camping experience is desirable. Photography Camp 4-H Photocamp is designed to give kids, 7th through 12th grades, the opportunity to learn the basics and techniques of photography, while having a great time! Held in June at the beautiful Iowa 4-H Center near Madrid, Iowa, campers will learn from qualified professional photographers, and then get the chance to try out their new skills themselves. The three-day event places emphasis on landscapes, close-ups, composition, and people photography, as well as painting with light, and other special effects. Both point & shoot and adjustable SLR camera operation are covered, as well as a complete section on computerized digital photographic enhancement. Field trips in the past have included the ISU campus, hands-on experience at the ISU Extension 4-H Computer Lab, Ledges State Park, the Iowa Arboretum, Reiman Gardens, The Bonebright Memorial Armory and much more! 4-H IS BASED ON RESEARCH
