Many boas are sill ucked away under heir winer covers, anxiously waiing he warmh of spring s sunshine o once again rejuvenae hem and heir owners. I encourage all Alberg sailors (including GLAA members pas and presen) who receive he GLAA newsleer o reach ou o fellow Alberg sailors a your clubs and marinas. As he Associaion eners is 51s year, membership is lower han i has been since 1967. Having an Alberg Associaion for hese beauiful and classically designed sailboas increases he value of our boa...wheher i is a 22, 29, 30, 34 or 37. During a Phone Commiee call, checking covers a your boayard, a a work pary or a a social gahering, when you come across an Alberg owner who is no a GLAA member ake a few minues and engage ha Alberger in conversaion...perhaps offer him or her a beer or rum...i ve never known an Alberg sailor o urn down a free drink!...and an opporuniy o alk abou heir boas!! Asking why hey love heir Alberg will no doub include a sory or wo of seaworhiness and seakindliness...unlike some of he newer horod or floaing palace designs coming off boabuilders assembly lines. Having an Alberg Associaion increases he value of all our good old boas.

The Carl Alberg designed sailboa offers a sailor wih any level of experience and skill a wonderful sailing experience! Simulaing ineres and paricipaion in Associaion aciviies is crucial and an ongoing challenge. This year will be no excepion as more GLAA members are puing heir boas up for sale...our boas and a large porion of he GLAA membership are a a place in heir lives where bodies and boas are growing older, and boh require more 'mainenance'. Sailing, for some, has become a chore and less enjoyable. The boom line is he GLAA needs new members! Our Associaion began as a One Design Racer/Cruiser class organizaion for racing Alberg 30 owners cenered in and around he Torono area who happened o also enjoy cruising wih heir families every summer. In fac, one such racer wroe a grea sory in an Aug-Sep ediion of he 1968 newsleer called The Racing Skippers Guide o Cruising. These 'early' Alberg 30 racers paricipaed in heir clubs' weekly race series and if here were enough Alberg 30s, hey would ge heir own sar as a One-Design Class...and he Alberg 30 Lake Onario Associaion flourished. There was los of socializing, boh on and off he waer.....more han here has been for quie some ime. Since he '80s, he GLAA has expanded is membership o include oher Alberg designs. Over he pas few years, owners of A22s and A37s have also joined our group. Though our One Design Racing oday doesn' have quie he large number of boas coming ou o he sar line on a regular basis as here were in he early years (12-15 boas and someime more), here is currenly a core of 4 commied Alberg 30 owners in he Torono area, and ohers across he lake and a he wes end. If you would like o race or cruise bu you are finding ha i is difficul o find he ime, consider paricipaing in a GLAA even by offering o help he Execuive. For example, he Direcor of Racing would cerainly welcome he suppor of members' help on a race commiee, eiher wih pos race pary arrangemens or wih organizing an addiional race his year. I ge up he nex morning o pleasan memories, and he mos unbelievable jumble of papers and unreadable noes, so I have no choice bu o wrie ficion. Only kidding abou he ficion, bu once in a while I need o check facs wih someone else o sraighen ou my noes. Evenually i all ges done. The 2014 AGM a Cherry Sree Resauran was aended by 34 members, parners and guess, represening 19 boas. Commodore Cahie Coulis reviewed he 50 h anniversary year, complimened members on good aendance a 50 h evens, and is looking for member inpu via he Members Quesionnaire. Throughou he evening an Alberg hisorical video, produced by Rob Feeney, was playing on he TV. The DVD was available for purchase, wih proceeds going o he GLAA. Cahie announced he passing of wo Alberg friends, Jim Cannon, former owner of A30, Hirondelle, and Douglas Sephenson, a former parner in Whiby Boa Works. Doug conribued much maerial o he associaion archives. The business porion of he meeing was fairly unevenful as i was no an elecion year and he GLAA Execuive, excep for Cruising Direcor, was remaining. Bill Newman has resigned afer 12 years of excellen service on he execuive. One moion; o change he Bylaws o reduce he number of Direcors a Large from wo o one, was defeaed afer some calm bu impassioned discussion. The oher moion was simple housekeeping; CYA is now called Sail Canada, so he bylaws need o show ha. Carried wihou discussion. I seems ha we can have a very enjoyable AGM meeing wihou always needing a gues speaker. There is no shorage of informal soryelling, as he wai saff will aes o as hey sand by hoping we will wrap i up soon. Anyone wih srong opinions and/or ideas for gues speakers, please le Cahie know. New Life for an Alberg 30 by Jeff Willis GLAA member Harry Black s vinage Alberg 30 has received an exensive refi a he he hands of Larry Slivinski, boa resorer exraordinaire. When no busy working a ( now-defunc )Wes Marine and currenly The Rigging Shoppe, Larry has dedicaed his ime o ransforming his somewha imeworn classic ino a rue beauy. Mos noable is he inerior renovaion: reconfiguring lockers, rebuillding he head comparmen, repurposing he ice ches, and renewing he galley area are only some of he highlighs of he remarkable projec. I visied Larry on a raw Easer weekend o have a look in his purpose-buil shop enclosing he boa. Ouside, a cruel wes wind raled halyards hrough he yard, bu inside was warm, cozy, and redolen wih he scen of curing varnish. The phoos serve o ell a beer sory. Sailboa Design Raios or Why Buy An Alberg Designed Sailboa? by Jeff Willis I s a cold winer weekend, and I m once again hinking abou sailing. One of my favourie subjecs is sailboa design, so naurally I ve perused he inerne for some more informaion. My venerable copy of Elemens of Yach Design by Norman Skene and C.A. Marchaj s Seaworhiness have been so well humbed hey offer no new illuminaions. Bu his fellow Eric Sponberg, now-he seems like a good source.( check him ou ) Sponberg liss abou a dozen key elemens of boa design in his aricle The Design Raios, and he explains hem horoughly wih illusraions o enhance he ex. He levels his sighs firs a he Cenre of Floaion, or CF. Archimedes principle ells us ha an objec floaing in waer will displace a volume of waer equal o is own weigh. Exra weigh added o he objec will have he effec of displacing sill more waer. How ha weigh is disribued, hough, is of paricular ineres. If exra weigh is added o a floaing body direcly above is cenre of floaion, he body will sink uniformly o deph ha maches he exra weigh s displacemen. However, if he weigh is added o a locaion near a side or end, he body ( a boa, in his case) will rim in order o bring is cenre of floaion in line wih he weigh. This applies no only o weighs, bu also forces. Thus, heeling brough abou by forces on he sails make a boa behave as if exra weigh is being added. If he boa s proporions are no balanced, he endency will be o rim down a he bow or sern a odd angles wih effecs on performance. Sponberg quoes examples of wide, shallow boas such as hose used in he Vendee Globe races. Wih heir broad secions af, hey behave like rockes downwind. This suis hem in he condiions hey primarily encouner, bu as a rule hey are poor performers o windward because as hey heel, he larger af secions raise he sern and drive he bow lower ino he sea and away from he windno he desired direcion. Sponberg mainains ha a well-proporioned hull will keep is CF posiion no maer wha is heading, wih predicable and favourable performance in all condiions. He cies some famous examples from Nahaniel Herreshoff, whose boas moved he CF slighly forward when close reaching, enhancing heir abiliy o lif o windward. I seems ha in modern imes many of he Herreshoff lessons have been forgoen. Sponberg closes his chaper wih a denunciaion of a modern design ene: powerful sern secions. While hey may increase downwind performance and give more habiabiliy o he cockpi area, upwind performance is adversely affeced. Marchaj is even more criical of his rend, showing how sailboas wih hese characerisics, regardless of rudder couneracion, have disurbing endencies o round up and broach once he sern rises and he bow buries. As he phoographs in his ex Seaworhiness demonsrae, he resuls are ofen specacularly disasrous. 12

Well, all his comes as no surprise o Alberg sailors. Seeped in he radiions of Scandinavian yach design, Carl Alberg s boas suffer none of he ill effecs of modern designs. Wih heir modes enries forward, ample beam and weigh disribuion amidships, and graceful, apering sern secions wih jus he righ amoun of overhang, Alberg designs have proven hemselves salwar performers in all condiions from ligh air whispers o roaring gales. Jus ask hose who have circumnavigaed in hem. Winer Blahs 2015 Sam and I love having he Blahs pary so much ha we have been doing i for almos 20 years! We will go on doing so unil asked o sop.
