Since 2014 our organizations have partnering to increase swim participation and decrease drowning rates in the community. To further the mission of Swim 1922, Theta Lambda Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Cary, NC, will award up to 8 scholarships to students attending elementary, middle, or high school in Cary or surrounding Western Wake County area schools (i.e., Holly Springs, Apex, Morrisville, or Fuquay-Varina). Recipients will receive a complete session of group swimming lessons (8 lessons) at Triangle Aquatic Center located in Cary, NC, at no cost. Winners will also receive swimming related gift items and other prizes. Application Requirements A. Scholarships will be need based. Applicants should have an economic or social need as determined by Theta Lambda Sigma Alumnae Chapter Scholarship Screening Committee and selected staff from Triangle Aquatic Center. (Students with special physical or cognitive needs must meet the requirements of the facility where lessons will be given.) B. Must complete an application to be signed by a parent or guardian. C. Applicant will submit an age/grade appropriate essay. See attachment for details. D. Applicant has never had formal swimming lessons, or if have taken lessons previously, would still be classified as a beginner. Beginning swimming description: a. Beginning swimmers are introduced to basic stroke movement and learn how to be more comfortable in the water. Focus is on pool rules, breathing, kicking and gliding technique, returning to the wall b. Learn to jump in water and resurface, floats on back, swims without flotation using beginning swimmer techniques E. Lessons will be completed in Spring/Summer 2019 based on space availability. The scholarship is for group instruction and is subject to class availability (first come first served basis). The latest allowed registration date is Fall 2019. Failure to register for and complete lessons by Fall 2019 will result in forfeiture of the scholarship. All swim facility rules and regulations will apply to the recipient. F. Parent to ensure student attends at least 90% of the swim lessons G. Parent must sign a Sigma Gamma Rho and Triangle Aquatic Center waiver of liability. H. TLS Swim1922 Scholarship Essay EACH APPLICANT MUST WRITE AN AGE-APPROPRIATE ESSAY DISCUSSING ONE OF THE FOLLOWING TOPICS: 1) Describe what water safety means to you. What are some good ways to be safe around potentially dangerous bodies of water such as pools, hot tubs, ponds, lakes, and/or the ocean? (Suggested topic for elementary or middle school students) - OR- 2) Identify an Olympic swimmer who inspires you. Discuss his/her biography, what s/he accomplished as an Olympic swimmer, and why s/he inspires you. (Suggested for elementary, middle, or high school students) ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES: Essays for ELEMENTARY SCHOOL students should be 3-4 paragraphs or 3/4 page (parents may assist with typing but should allow students to create the essay in their own words). The required essay length for MIDDLE SCHOOL students is 4-6 paragraphs typed (or 1 page). Essays should be 6-8 paragraphs typed (1.5-2 pages) for HIGH SCHOOL students. Essays should include an introduction, body, and closing paragraph. Size 12 Arial font is recommended. Please do not submit an incomplete essay.
