CALOOSAHATCHEE MARCHING & CHOWDER SOCIETY APRIL 2010 BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING MINUTES -- Revised The regular April meeting of the Board of Directors of the Caloosahatchee Marching & Chowder Society, Inc. was called to order at 7:02 PM Tuesday, April 13, 2010, at the CMCS clubhouse located at the Cape Coral Yacht Club. Present: Commodore Joan Perkett, Vice Commodore Gerald Canning, Vice Commodore Summerset Steve Romaine, Rear Commodore Cruising Glen Vetter, Fleet Yeoman Kathleen Vance, Past Commodore Bill Misenheimer, Directors: Bob Duff, Bob Easterly, Elise Missall, Jerry Pim, Jerry Wellens, Pauline Wylie. Excused: Rear Commodore Racing Dan Merriman, Fleet Purser Jo Beauvois, Tim Cheek, Judy Tomlins March Minutes: The Minutes of the March Meeting were previously distributed via email. Jerry Canning moved to accept the March minutes as published, Elise Missall seconded and all approved. Financial Report: Due to a serious boating accident, Fleet Purser Jo Beauvois was unable to publish a financial report. Discussion was tabled until the next meeting. OLD BUSINESS: Lou Tilley Races: Lou has suggested that it is time to find a new name for this race series. Since Bob Lee s resignation as the series leader, no one has stepped up to take charge. The objective is to keep this race fun. In order to provide an incentive for members to serve as committee boat, Bob Duff suggested awarding Baumgardner points for committee boat duty. Steve Romaine expressed his concern that committee boat captains need experience to handle potential negative situations. According to Bob Duff, an average of 6 7 boats are coming out for each race. Joan Perkett has so far received 2 completed release forms. Bob Duff can tabulate results. Dan Merriman will CMCS Board Minutes Page 1 of 5

send out an email blast regarding the upcoming April 18 th race, and Bob Duff on Chase the Clouds will serve as committee boat. Trophy Committee: Bill Misenheimer reported that the committee was hard at work, but progress is still in the organization stage. Bill did look into the Cape Coral Historical Society as a possible site for displaying our trophies, however he was unable to find anyone present who could help him. The trophies are stored in Jerry Pim s Garage and Jerry will farm them out to volunteers for cleaning. Jerry has also contacted Debra George about designing the case, and she is going to evaluate the location. Bill Misenheimer also made the suggestion that the Trophy Committee take charge of calculating the winner of the Baumgardner trophy, as it is a combination of both racing and cruising achievements. 2011 Change of Watch Dinner: The date has been confirmed on the Yacht Club schedule with the City of Cape Coral. The next step will be to find a caterer. Pauline Wylie suggested Elias Catering and will provide contact information. Storage Space Rental: Gordon Coffman can provide a storage space similar to the one we are renting now, at a cost of $72.00/month. His facility is located in the Cape Coral industrial area near the CC. Hospital. Joan Perkett reported that we have a free month coming to us from our current storage provider, and suggested we wait until after the free month has been credited before we move. The cost of our existing storage unit is $1,200 for 13 months. The current storage agreement runs out on 6/15/10. The storage unit holds tables, chairs, pots grills and a storage cabinet. Bob Duff suggested it might be more cost effective to get rid of the club s tables & chairs, and rent them for events such as EPOL. An added advantage would be delivery and pick-up by the provider. Bob Duff will check prices of rentals, and it was decided to finish this discussion at the next meeting. PA System for Yacht Club Pavilion: The PA system used a the last event held in the Pavilion was inadequate. Joan Perkett suggested that we may need to rent a better one for the next meeting. Pauline Wylie moved that in the event that an adequate PA system could not be found, the club authorize rental of a PA system. Jerry Canning seconded and all approved. NEW BUSINESS: Ginny Price Memorial: Ginny Price recently passed away. Joan Perkett stated that Ginny had been a long-time member of the club, and had been made an honorary member by the board. She felt we should do something to commemorate her contribution and suggested a page in the next Chowder Chatter where members could share their thoughts and memories of Ginny. Board members agreed that would be a good way to remember Ginny. Joan CMCS Board Minutes Page 2 of 5

will publish an email requesting member contributions, and will collect them by 4/22/10 for publication in the May Chowder Chatter. COMMITTEE REPORTS: Fleet Yeoman: Kathleen Vance read a letter received from Robert Kueny of the Charlotte Harbor Community Sailing Center Inc, thanking CMCS for its generous gift of $175 for their youth sailing program. Summerset Steve Romaine: There are 175 days until the 2010 Summerset Regatta. A planning meeting of the 15-member Summerset Committee was held on 3/24/10. A draft of the NOR has been created by Cindy Naumann, incorporating changes for the new agenda. The next meeting of the committee will take place on 4/29/10. Steve distributed new sponsorship forms Gold for $250 sponsors and Silver for $100 sponsors. To date we have 8 firm sponsors: West Marine, Olsen Marine, Offshore Sailing School, Lexus, Innovative Printing, Doc Fords, Knighton Sails, and Moss Marine. Special recognition was made of Suzanne Aguilera s efforts in designing and producing the sponsorship forms. West Marine Community day will take place on Saturday, 4/17/10. Steve asked for volunteers to be at the store for about 1 hour each. Ross Webb and Mike Alexander of the Edison Sailing Center will both be at the 4/20/10 general membership meeting to talk about the sailing center programs and costs. To date we have processed 3 applications for youth sailing grants. Steve will possibly present checks for these grants at the next membership meeting. Regarding T-shirts, Steve stated that dealing with last year s vendor was a headache. He is getting bids from other vendors. He is also talking to 3 artists for artwork for the T-shirts and table cards: Linda Koenig, Cal Parker and Steven Carpenter. The committee is looking into producing a video of the racing action on the water, however this would require another power boat. The committee is considering Sculptures by Claire as a trophy provider. Preliminary costs would be approximately $300 higher than last year. Cruising: Glenn Vetter will be away, cruising to the Bahamas, from 4/20/10 until early June. The Land Lubbers cruise did not happen due to bad weather. The Macomber cruise to Sanibel Bight had 16 boats, and most proceeded by dinghy to Woodys. Members of the Cape Coral Sailing Club had been expected, but did not show. Cruisers to Cape Haze (8 boats and 2 land cruisers) enjoyed great weather. CMCS Board Minutes Page 3 of 5

The Pims will lead the upcoming Santweenie cruise to Tween Waters, and have 11 boats signed up. The Heading North cruise is uncertain at this time. Steve Romaine may be able to lead this cruise on the way north, but cannot lead it on the return trip due to a race commitment Danger Island: Judy Tomlins will write the Chowder Chatter article and count the boats in attendance, Joan Perkett will take charge of the Grand Chowder Contest, and Ben and Carolyn Preston will do the Kayak races. Glenn will contact Tom and Sandy Poulos to see if they can handle the Black Tie Croquet. Glenn has all of the cruise leader gifts available and labeled for the next 2 meetings. Racing: The skippers meeting for the Santweenie race will be held at 5:30 PM on the dock at Tween Waters. Dan Merriman will start the race. Ladies Bridge Club: Pauline Wylie reported that the next meeting will be April 14 th at Sue Stier s house. Sue Maxwell from Lee Memorial Health Systems will present tips to sharpen and improve your memory. Legislative: Bob Easterly reported on recent legislation proposed by State Rep. Richard Steinberg and State Senator Dan Gelber. This legislation would remove current restrictions on local governments from regulating anchoring. The overall effect would be that cities and counties would be able to set their own rules instead of abiding by state regulations, thus opening the door for limiting anchoring rights for boaters. Bob suggested that all club members contact their senators and representatives regarding this pending legislation. Liberty Ashore: Elise Missall reported that Monica does not yet have results on income/expenses from the Shrimp Festival dinner. All agreed the event was a success. Monica also needs someone to help getting the grills started for the upcoming Grill Night. Bob Duff will try to get there early to get things started. Public Relations: Steve Romaine reported that there was an article published in the Fort Myers Beach Bulletin on the Shrimp Festival Race, and the Diane Fowler had recently published an article in Southwinds. Ships Store: Jerry Wellens reported that Carolyn Wilson will have belts and sail ties at the next meeting. Sunshine over the Yardarm: Pauline Wylie reported that cards were sent to the following members: Jo Beauvois, Russell Vance, and the family of new member Tom Blue who recently passed away. Technology/Website: Jerry Pim has heard that some members are not receiving email blasts. Joan Perkett has done some research, and indicated that Bev Duff has recently sent out an updated roster. Joan also mentioned that depending on how you access the roster on the website, you may see an older version or the current version. She also indicated that some board meeting minutes were missing from the site. Jerry will look into both issues. There being no more new business, Bob Duff moved to adjourn, Jerry Canning seconded, and all approved. The meeting was adjourned at 8:19 CMCS Board Minutes Page 4 of 5
