The Vandals won the first of a home-and-home series this season, 68-48, at Memorial Gym in Moscow on Dec. 6. That win broke up a four-game Portland win streak in the series, which now sits at 13-10 in Idaho s favor. THE PILOTS The Pilots have gone 1-3 since cracking the Top-25 for the first time in 50 years. They have played two games since last facing Idaho. UP beat Denver, 72-62, at home, before falling on the road to #21 Washington by an 89-54 tally. Portland holds a 70.7 scoring average and a 71.2 defensive scoring average. Its.461 team field goal percentage ranks among the nation s best, as do its 3-point percentage (.404) and free throw percentage (.746). The Pilots only average 33.1 rebounds per game, but hold opponents to even fewer at 31.4. The team s three leading scorers, Nik Raivio, T.J. Campbell and Robin Smeulders, were kept quiet by a stingy Idaho defense the first time around, but the Vandals won t expect the trio to shoot 5-of-30 like they did 16 days ago. Combined, they hit 44.5 percent of their shots from the field and average 39.1 points per game. Luke Sikma is the team s leading rebounder, with 7.4 boards per game. FUN FACTS Portland s Luke Sikma is the son of former NBA great, Jack Sikma, who won a 1979 NBA title with the Seattle SuperSonics. His 15-of-15 effort from the line tied Ken Owens 15-of-15 performance against Washington in 1981 for the best in school history, while the 15 made free throws are tied with Owens and Idaho legend Gary Simmons for the second-most in school history. Watson s free throw performance in that game also rates as the NCAA s second-best free throw shooting performance so far this season. Perfect Again Against Eastern Oregon on Dec. 12, Mac Hopson tried his best to match Kashif Watson s free-throw effort from earlier in the season. Hopson netted all 12 of his attempts to put him in a third-place tie in Idaho school history for single-season free throw percentage. That performance is also the seventh-best in the NCAA this season. Hopson and Watson are the only teammates in the NCAA to have 10-of-10 or better performances from the free-throw line this year. A Hot Start The team s 5-2 start to the season was its best after seven games since 1989-90, when the Vandals also started 5-2. That team went on to finish 25-6, win the Big Sky regular-season and tournament titles and face Louisville in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. A Long-Range Streak Idaho has made at least one 3-point field goal in 352 consecutive games. The last time Idaho failed to record a 3-pointer was Feb. 27, 1997 vs. Long Beach State. The streak includes 2,067 made 3-pointers and includes 133 games of seven or more made 3-point shots. A High-Ranking Win Idaho s 68-48 win over #25 Portland on Dec. 3 marks the first Vandal victory over a ranked opponent since March 14, 1982, when the Vandals took down #16 Iowa, 69-67 in overtime, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The last time Idaho beat a ranked team during the regular season was also in 1981-82, when the Vandals beat #15 Oregon State at the Far West Classic in Portland, Ore., by a 71-49 margin on Dec. 28, 1981. He s on Fire! Senior guard Steffan Johnson nailed his first five 3-point field goal attempts against Eastern Washington on Nov. 28, and finished the game 6-of-7 (.875) from beyond the arc. That long-range performance is the best in the WAC so far this year, and the third-best single-game performance in Idaho school history. The six made 3-pointers are also tied for third-most all-time by an Idaho player. Riding the Pine to Victory Last season, Idaho s bench players accounted for 16.1 points per game, while the team s opponents averaged 17.6. This year, Don Verlin and that Vandals are getting much more production from the extra men, as Idaho is outscoring its opponents by an average of 23.0-20.6 in bench points. In 33 games last year, Idaho had 20 or more points from its bench just 11 times. Through 10 games this year, the bench has already eclipsed 20 points eight times.

2009-10 Vandal Basketball Notes An Impressive Balancing Act While the Vandals have the WAC s third-ranked offense at 77.6 points per game, they re doing it without a player ranked in the top 10 in the conference in scoring. So far this year, three Vandals, Steffan Johnson, Mac Hopson and Kashif Watson, are averaging double-digit points, while two more, Luiz Toledo and Marvin Jefferson are nearly there at 9.4 and 8.0 per game, respectively. So far this year, eight different Vandals have already scored double-digit points in a game. Working on the Boards Last year, Idaho averaged a meager 30.4 rebounds per game, a total that rated dead-last in the WAC. So far this season, the Vandals are grabbing an average of 37.2 boards through to rate fifth among WAC squads. Owning the Perimeter Idaho entered the season with a highly-touted back court, and so far, it has not disappointed offensively or defensively. So far this year, Idaho rates first in the WAC with a.420 percentage from 3-point range, while allowing its opponents to just a.331 clip from long range to rate fifth in the conference. Playing the Percentages Idaho leads the WAC in field goal percentage (.483) and rates third in field goal percentage defense (.410). It should come as no surprise, then, that Idaho rates fourth in the conference with a +6.6 scoring margin So far this year, 10 of the team s 13 active players are shooting better than.400 from the field, while sophomore Luiz Toledo leads the team and ranks second in the WAC with a.632 field goal percentage. Throwing a Block Party Marvin Jefferson is third the WAC with 2.22 blocked shots per game so far this year. What s more, that average also puts him on pace to exceed last year s total of 58, as well as to threaten Idaho s school record of 72, by the end of the regular season. Kelvin Smith s single-season blocked shots record has stood since 1982-83. Jefferson has at least one blocked shot in 21 consecutive games, dating back to Feb. 7, 2009, at Hawai`i. A Road Less Traveled Idaho s 94-87 win over Utah gave the Vandals their first season-opening win in a true road game since 2002, when Idaho beat Oregon State 76-73 in Corvallis. Playing From Ahead Idaho has held halftime leads in nine of its 10 games so far this season. Additionally, the Vandals have led from start to finish three times. In its seven wins this year, the worst second-half deficit Idaho faced is one point, and that lasted 29 seconds in the season-opening win at Utah. A Tough Test Idaho opened its season with two of its first three games against 2009 NCAA Tournament teams. Utah was a No. 5 seed, while North Dakota State was a No. 14 seed. Idaho beat both Utah and North Dakota State on their home floors and started the season 2-1. Idaho has the only two WAC wins against 2009 NCAA Tournament teams so far this year. Idaho narrowly missed out on going 3-0 against 2009 Tourney teams, but fell 95-93 at Cal State Northridge on Dec. 3. A First-Team First Mac Hopson earned first-team all-wac and all-newcomer team honors last year. He was the first Idaho player to earn top Western Athletic Conference honors and the first to earn first-team all-conference since Gordon Scott during the 1999-2000 season in the Big West. He was also a preseason first-team all-wac pick by both the coaches and the media. High Expectations Idaho finished third in the Western Athletic Conference last season with a 9-7 record. It was the highest finish since the Vandals joined the WAC and the highest conference finish since the 1998-99 team went 11-5 and finished third in the Big West Conference. Idaho s nine wins were also the most conference wins for the team since joining the WAC and were more than the team had earned in its previous three seasons combined (seven). Preseason Honors Idaho was picked to finish fourth in the conference by the coaches and media alike. It was the highest the Vandals have been selected since joining the league in 2005. The media also selected senior guard Steffan Johnson, a transfer from Pacific, as the league s Preseason Newcomer of the Year, while both the media and the coaches picked senior guard Mac Hopson to the preseason all-wac first team. World University Games Sophomore forward Luiz Toledo and senior forward Luciano de Souza represented their home country, Brazil, at the 2009 World University Games at Belgrade, Serbia. The pair helped lead Brazil to a 3-3 record, with wins over Japan, Mexico and United Arab Emirates. De Souza led the team with a 15.2 scoring average, while also pulling down 6.2 rebounds per game. Toledo shot.500 from the floor and averaged 8.0 points and 5.2 rebounds during the tournament. Both players started all six games. Quick Facts Location:... One of the unique nicknames in sports, Vandals has been the nickname for University of Idaho athletic teams for more than 80 years. Area sportswriters coined the nickname as they tried to describe the tenacity with which coach Hec Edmundson s basketball teams played defense. It first was used in 1918 strictly for the men s basketball team and officially adopted for all teams in 1921. The sports editor of the school newspaper, Lloyd Jazz McCarty, along with the dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Edward Maslin Hulme, made the final push for the nickname to be adopted, both as a tribute to the intensity of the athletic teams and to the Norsemen of old.

Through nine games, Idaho has put together eight +10 or greater scoring runs this year. Idaho s season-opening win over Utah was its first win at the Huntsman Center and its first win over Utah since Dec. 27, 1938. Idaho s win at North Dakota State was the team s first win at Fargo. The Vandals had lost their previous three road games at NDSU. Idaho finished the 2008-09 season with an RPI of 135 which was up 164 points from 2007-08. The RPI improvement was fifth-best in the country. With 17 wins last year, Idaho earned its most wins in a season since the 1993-94 team finished 18-10. Idaho finished above.500 both overall and in conference for the first time since the 1998-99 season. Idaho coach Don Verlin never has been associated with a team at the NCAA level which finished below.500 in a season. Don Verlin joined the University of Idaho family as head coach of the men s basketball team March 24, 2008. Verlin s staff consists of assistant coaches with 38 years of combined coaching experience. They are Ray Lopes, Mike Score, Mike Freeman, and director of operations Chris Helbling.
