ATHLETICS COMMUNICATIONS Director of Strategic Communications: Joey Daniels Email: danielsj@uwgb.edu Office: 920.465.2498 Cell: 920.288.7723 LEADING OFF December 20, 2015 12:00 PM CT Resch Center Green Bay, Wis. Game No. 10 Following Green Bay s 0-3 start to the season, the Phoenix has rebounded nicely by winning five of its last six games by an average of 11.0 points per game to lift its record above.500. The only loss in that span came on a buzzerbeater vs. Toledo. Returning to the court for the first time in nine days against Pacific, all 10 Green Bay players who appeared in the contest recorded points, marking the ninth straight time to begin the season that at least nine players have reached the scoring column. Additionally, five players reached double-figures for the Phoenix in the game for the second time this season, something the 2014-15 Green Bay team accomplished only once last year, coming in a 71-58 victory at Wright State on 2/2/15. Green Bay s new system has also yielded positive results on the defensive end of the floor. Through its first nine games, the Phoenix has forced opponents into double-digit turnovers in every game, while forcing 19.0 per game over its current 5-1 stretch dating back to 11/22 against Minnesota-Duluth. GREEN BAY (5-4) vs. UW-SUPERIOR (4-4) Green Bay has produced 10.1 steals per contest this season, which ranks 7th in the nation as of 12/18, while senior forward Jordan Fouse has averaged 2.78, which individually ranks eighth in the NCAA. As of the same date, the Phoenix is tied for second in the nation with UNC- Wilmington in steals per turnover at 0.87, trailing only Incarnate Word (0.91). Despite losing over 63 percent of its scoring entering the season, you wouldn t notice it thus far. Green Bay has averaged 82.9 points per game through its first nine games, which ranks third in the Horizon League and inside the top-50 in the country (T-41st). The Phoenix has already produced six 80-plus point scoring games, surpassing the number of last year s 24-9 squad (five), while its leading scorer senior guard Carrington Love has posted five 20-point games, averaging over 30 points per contest (30.5) against California schools this season (at Stanford and vs. Pacific). Green Bay will face UW-Superior (4-4) for the second time in program history on Sunday afternoon. It marks the first meeting between the two schools since Jan. 8, 1979, when the Yellowjackets defeated the Phoenix 55-47 at the Brown County Arena. PROJECTED STARTERS (2015-16 Stats) No. Name Pos. Botz made his first-ever career start in the season-opener at Satnford, logging a career-high 36 minutes. He made the first basket of the year for the Phoenix and has received the green light from Darner ever since, a color he rarely received last year. Botz plays the forward in Green Bay s new-look system, marking the first time at the collegiate level the 6-foot-7 junior has been listed at that position. STAT-STUFFER SUPREME Jordan Fouse has been a catalyst for the Phoenix this season, averaging 12.0 points, 9.6 rebounds, as well as team highs in assists (3.4) and steals (2.8). Not known as a scorer, the Preseason First Team All-Horizon League selection scored a career-high 22 point on Nov. 30 against SIUE, a game in which he added six rebounds, a season-high-tying six assists and four blocks in 31 minutes. With his 6 rebounds against Edwardsville, Fouse (820 career) surpassed Alec Brown (800) for third place on the all-time rebounds list, and he is now 25 steals away from surpassing Terry Evans (2005-09) for first on that all-time list. Fouse was named Horizon League Player of the Week for the first time in his career for the week of Nov. 30 - Dec. 6. C-LOVE (IN) GREEN The senior point guard has been the offensive focal point for the Phoenix to this season, leading the team with a 19.2 points per game, along with 2.67 steals per game, which is good for 11th in the NCAA as of 12/18. Love has knocked down 25 three-pointers this season, which accounts for over 43 percent of the team s makes from downtown. The Milwaukee native earned his second career Horizon League Player of the Week award on 11/16 after notching a career-high 32 points in the season-opener at Stanford, and is currently second in the Horizon League in points per game behind Oakland s Kahlil Felder (24.6). FREE THROWS WOES Despite its poor free throw shooting percentage of 61.6 percent on the season, Green Bay has done its best to offset that stat by getting to the charity stripe: alot. On 12/1, the Phoenix led the nation in freethrow attempts with 219. However, the Phoenix ranks 332nd out of 351 qualified teams as of Dec. 18. After missing 17 freebies in two straight against Akron and EIU, there are signs that Green Bay is beginning to snap out of it. In two of its last three performances, the Phoenix finished 23-of-30 from the line (76.4 percent), including its best effort of the season vs. Toledo on Dec. 6, (13-of-16, 81.3 percent). However, it is coming off a game vs. Pacific in which in ended just 22-of-44 (50.0 percent). LOWE-POST PRESENCE After starting 13 games a year ago, junior forward Kenneth Lowe made his presence known in his second of 2015-16 on 11/17 against East Tennessee State. In what was arguably the best game of his collegiate career, the 6-foot-8 forward posted a career-high 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting, also career bests, to go along with nine rebounds in just 24 minutes, falling one rebound shy of his first career-double-double. Lowe is shooting 52.1 percent (25-of-48) from the field and ranks fourth in the Horizon League in blocks per game (1.8). SINGLE-GAME STEALS RECORD With 16 steals against UMD, Green Bay tied the single-game program record accomplished twice in 1988 vs. Detroit & Ferris State. The Phoenix rank seventh in the NCAA in steals per game, averaging 10.11 per game as a team through nine games. SCORING IN BUNCHES Green Bay s 350 points through its first four games was the most it s scored since 1971-72, when it averaged 89.3 PPG through four games in Division II under head coach Dave Buss. Green Bay s 90 points scored in its 11/17 loss to ETSU was the most they ve put up in a losing-effort since Jan. 11, 1972, against Winona State (L, 92-104), when it was still a Division II institution. SPREADING THE WEALTH Through the team s first nine games this season, 10 of its 12 players have averaged over 10.0 minutes per game. Additionally, all but one Green Bay player, junior forward Henry Uwadiae, has posted new career highs in scoring this season. Carrington Love (32), Charles Cooper (19), Kerem Kanter (12) at Stanford, Kenneth Lowe (23) at ETSU, Anthony (8) and Avery Brown (9) at Georgia Tech, Tevin Findlay (15) vs. Minnesota-Duluth, Jordan Fouse (22) and Khalil Small (13) at SIUE and Turner Botz (12) and Jamar Hurdle (10) vs. Pacific. IRONMEN Senior forward Jordan Fouse enters tonight s game having not just played, but started in all 107 of his games in a Green Bay uniform. Meanwhile, his teammate Carrington Love has also played in all 107 possible games at Green Bay, starting 59 career contests. Among the other 10 active players on the roster, forward Kenneth Lowe (22) has the most games started at the Division I level. #RP40 DEBUTS Darner s defensive philosophy, dubbed RP40 (relentless pressure for 40 minutes), was in full effect in Green Bay s season-opener at Stanford, as the Phoenix forced the Cardinal into 21 turnovers. Stanford had averaged just 10.8 turnovers per game last season. STREAK FINALLY SNAPPED The Phoenix s loss to the ETSU Bucs on Nov. 17 in Johnson City, Tenn., marked the first time Green Bay have lost back-to-back games in the regular season since Jan. 3-5, 2013, at Wright State and Detroit, respectively. RAINING THREE S Green Bay buried 10 three-pointers against Stanford, the first time it has made 10 or more three-pointers in a game since Dec. 28, 2013, against St. Francis. The Phoenix connected on 9-of-17 (52.9 percent) of the shots it dialed up from long distance against SIUE, marking the first time it has shot over 50 percent (min. 10 attempts) from beyond the arc since 12/1/14 vs. Minnesota-Duluth (.545, 6-of-11). DEFENSIVELY-SPEAKING Green Bay accumulated 245 steals in 2014-15, second-most on Green Bay s all-time single-season steals list (249, 1993-94). In addition to quick hands, the Phoenix had 161 blocks last season, ranking third-best in program history for a single season. Individually, Fouse had more steals than any junior in program history a year ago (64), after he also broke the freshman (55) and sophomore (68) single-season records. SEVENTY OR LESS EQUALS SUCCESS In the past three seasons, the Phoenix is 42-7 when allowing less than 70 points. In 27 of those 47 outings, Green Bay allowed less than 60, going 26-1 record in those games. The lone loss in that scenario came in the 2015 Horizon League tournament title game, when the Phoenix fell 54-44 to Valparaiso. REPLACING THE ROTATION Green Bay lost over 63 percent of its scoring from 2014-15 as it is without Keifer Sykes (18.6 ppg), Greg Mays (12.0 ppg), Alfonzo McKinnie (8.0 ppg) and Daeshon Francis (4.5 ppg). Thus, the Phoenix will need to multiple players to step up if it wants to challenge for the Horizon League crown. It has given ample opportunity to a number of returning players, four of which averaged less than 10 minutes per game last season: Turner Botz (8.1), Khalil Small (6.7), Tevin Findlay (4.3) and Kerem Kanter (4.3). Here are a few candidates: Carrington Love Returns as Green Bay s leading scorer from a season ago, in which he had the only other two 20-point scoring games, including a career-high 28 points in a 78-61 win over R.J. Hunter (19 points) and Georgia State. Charles Cooper Cooper averaged 18.8 points per game as a sophomore at Kaskaskia College in Centralia, Ill., scoring in double-figures in 24 of 27 games played last season, including 14 games of 20+ points and two 30-point games. He scored a season-high 33 on 9-of-15 shooting in a 93-86 road win over Lincoln Trail College on 2/14/14, while leading the Blue Devils to a 23-9 record.

I think it s important to put the foundation in and build it from there. On the tradition at Green Bay: I know a lot about Green Bay and the tradition that coach Bennett established here. I m kind of a basketball junkie; growing up in Indiana you kind of have to be. I followed the Horizon League with Butler when they were in it. On not having a set starting-five: I told our guys, at Florida Southern my leading minute guy was our sixth man. I had a two-time All- American score 2,300 points in his career and for two and a half years, he came off the bench as our sixth man. On his system: We play faster, so there s going to be more possessions, more shots, they re going to get more opportunities to score. People are going to say, who is this? Why didn t he play more last year? On his team s preparation: I haven t pulled the reigns back on guys yet. I want to see what they can do, what kind of plays they can make. As coaches, we re trying to give them a chance to prove what they can do as a player. Not being around them much only having individual workouts for a long period of time, we didn t know what they could do. Last Time Out - Green Bay 93, Pacific 88 Dec. 15 Pacific Resch Center Returning to the court for the first time in nine days, the Green Bay men s basketball team stayed true to its early-season RP40 identity on Tuesday night, as senior guard Carrington Love scored a game-high 29 points and the Phoenix forced 23 turnovers en route to a 93-88 win over Pacific at the Resch Center. Green Bay, who has now won five of its last six games, shot 53.3 percent (32-of-60) and had all 10 of its players who appeared in the contest record points, marking the ninth straight time to begin the season that at least nine players have reached the scoring column. Five players in all reached double-figures for the Phoenix, including Charles Cooper (15), Turner Botz (career-high 12), Jamar Hurdle (career-high 10) and Khalil Small (10). But the catalyst for Green Bay was Love, as the Milwaukee native finished 8-of-13 from the field and five-of-nine from beyond the arc, one triple shy of tying his career high of six accomplished in Green Bay s season-opener on Nov. 13 at Stanford. In what was the first meeting ever between the two programs, Pacific kept things interesting down the stretch, as a combination of missed Phoenix free-throws (50.0 percent, 22-of-44) and the Tigers Alec Kobre (team-high 25 points) drew the visitors as close as four points with 18 seconds remaining, 92-88, although that would be as close as Pacific would get. Our schedule to start the season did no favors for us. We start with three games in seven days all on the road, so this will be a tough challenge for us before we come home. On playing at 6 a.m. on Nov. 17: I told our guys if you can t be excited to be playing the early game on ESPN (Tip-Off Marathon) there s something wrong with you. If you use it s too early, I m too tired, I can t play, then just stay in bed and we ll play with the guys that want to go. You got to be fired up for those games. On season expectations: The biggest thing for us is to see improvement right now. I don t get caught up in saying we have to win this many games for this to be a successful season. With a new system, we re going to have some ups and downs during the year, it s how do we bounce from that. Our goal is we want to be playing our best in January and February heading into the conference tournament. On returning Green Bay to NCAA tournament: I think you ve got to set high goals for players and we ve talked about it with our guys. We ve said, Hey, our goal is play in the NCAA Tournament. I wouldn t have taken this job if I didn t think we could get there. 2nd half: 16-31 51.6% 2nd half: 1-8 12.5% 2nd half: 19-33 57.6% Game: 32-60 53.3% Game: 7-17 41.2% Game: 22-44 50.0% Officials: Richard Crawford, Jeffrey Smith, Mark Schnur Technical fouls: Pacific-BOWLES, Ray. Linc Darner, who led Florida Southern College to the 2015 NCAA Division II National Championship, was named the seventh head coach in the history of the Green Bay men s basketball program, Director of Athletics Mary Ellen Gillespie announced on April 14, 2015. Darner is a 13-year head coaching veteran with 292 career wins and a career winning percentage of over.700. From the very start of our process, Linc s experience as a head coach impressed all of us, Gillespie said. He has had tremendous success as a basketball coach and will be an outstanding coach and mentor for our student-athletes. He is a proven winner, and on top of the wins, he runs outstanding programs. After a thorough and comprehensive search process, there is no doubt he is a perfect fit for this institution and our men s basketball program. Darner built a championship program at Florida Southern in his nine seasons at the helm, compiling a record of 218-72. The Moccasins advanced to the NCAA Tournament in eight consecutive seasons (2008-15) and won six Sunshine State Conference regular season championships and six conference tournament titles.
