The game was a tight one throughout, as the two teams were tied on eight separate occasions and the lead changed hands six times. However, it was a hot shooting third quarter that sparked the Yellow Jackets to their largest lead, 10, as Forest Hills hit seven three-point buckets in the quarter. Jai Rorie was the catalyst, scoring 22 points and hitting six of his 14 three-point attempts. Rorie also had a pair of assists and a steal in the game, while grabbing two rebounds. He was named the Charlie Adams 2A Men s Basketball Championship Most Valuable Player. Trey Belin earned Most Outstanding Performer honors with 10 points and five rebounds for Forest Hills. 2018 Men s Championship Retrospectives 3A Men: Cox Mill escapes Northside 65-63 for second straight title RALEIGH, N.C. In a highly anticipated matchup of a pair of defending state champions, it was the defending 3A State Champions, Cox Mill, that held on to down last year s 2A State Champions, Northside-Jacksonville, by a narrow 65-63 margin. The two teams played a very tight first half, with Cox Mill taking a slim 36-31 lead into the halftime break, but the Chargers came out firing in the third quarter, raising their lead to as many as 13 around the midway point of the third frame. As champions typically do, Northside-Jacksonville battled back, eventually drawing even with the Chargers on a threepoint bomb by Gabe Kirkendoll, knotting the game at 63 all with just 19 seconds remaining. Wendell Moore, Jr., last year s 3A Championship Game Most Valuable Player, stepped up to the line with seven seconds to go and knocked down two free throws to give the Chargers a 65-63 lead. Northside had one final push up the floor, and Levi Ramirez heaved a ball, that went in for three, but it was ruled he had stepped on the sideline before the shot, and the shot waived off with only a second remaining, sending Cox Mill to their second-straight State Championship. Moore, Jr. struggled from the floor all game, as a stingy Monarch defense held him to just 3 of 13 from the floor. He was able to get to the foul line 19 times as he converted 17 of those free throws on the way to 24 points and Charlie Adams NCHSAA 3A Men s Basketball Championship Game Most Valuable Player honors for the second year in a row. Caleb Stone-Carrawell was huge for the Chargers as well, scoring 18 points on 8-14 from the field, including a pair of three-pointers. Stone-Carrawell was named the Chargers Most Outstanding Player. Rechon Leaky Black had 9 points in the game, but did pick up six steals, helping the Chargers win the turnover battle by a 22-11 margin. Kenny Dye was the Most Outstanding Player for Northside-Jacksonville. The Monarchs guard scored a team-high 18 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Two other Monarchs were in double-figures with Kirkendoll scoring 16 with 7 rebounds. Jason Robinson was also in double-figures, scoring 13 and coming up a rebound shy of a double-double with 9 boards. 1 2 3 4 - Total Northside-Jax (29-1) 15 16 13 19-63 Cox Mill 16 20 18 11-65 Northside-Jax Pts FT Reb Ast Blk St D. The Independence Patriots returned to the 4A State Championship Game for the first time since 1997, when they knocked off Richmond County. The second trip to a State Final was a pretty similar picture as the Patriots played solid team basketball on their way to a 71-60 victory over Heritage. The Patriots never trailed by more than two, which came in the opening minute of play as Huskies senior guard Jarren McCallister got Heritage off to a 2-0 lead, but Independence closed the first frame on a 9-2 run, stretching their advantage out to 17-9 at the first quarter break. Heritage played the Patriots closely, outscoring Independence 15-14 in the second quarter, as things settled into more of a halfcourt game, but Independence rattled off a pair of threes in the third, with Andra McKee and Jordan Mobley connecting to stretch their lead to 13 heading into the fourth, and the Patriots never looked back. Jayden Gardner kept Heritage in the game the whole way, as the senior committed to Carolina worked hard in the paint. Gardner scored a game-high 30 points and snatched 13 rebounds, converting 10 of his 11 foul shots. He was named Heritage s Most Outstanding Player. Jamarius Burton played a huge role in both the offensive scoring and on the glass for the Patriots. Burton scored 13 on the night, grabbing seven rebounds while dishing out three assists on his way to being named the Charlie Adams 4A Men s Basketball Championship Game s Most Valuable Player. Andra McKee had a team-high 20 points and grabbed three rebounds as he was named Independence s Most Outstanding Player. 1 2 3 4 - Total Heritage (25-5) 9 15 9 27-60 Independence (31-1) 17 14 15 25-71 Heritage Pts FT Reb Ast Blk St D.
