Brenda Spurgeon, Youth Program Specialist, will be facilitating this training. Remember, all 4-H leaders need to complete 1 training per year! After Brenda s portion is complete, we will go over fair work schedules. Please be here for this meeting as this is the time to represent your club as these decisions are being made. All final decisions about scheduling will be made on this night! Food Safety Quality Assurance-FSQA Iowa State University Extension and Outreach requires that any 4-H member showing in any of the following project areas at the COUNTY OR STATE FAIR must be FSQA certified: Beef (Market, Breeding, Bucket Bottle, Cow/Calf), Dairy Cattle, Sheep, Swine, Goat, Rabbit and Poultry. You will be unable to show in these areas if you are not FSQA certified! FSQA Testing (Grades 7th-12th) April 2nd and 4th: 3:30pm-5:30pm 6th: 3-5 pm FSQA Training (Required for Grades 4th-6th) April 9th: 6:00pm-7:45pm April 11th: 4:30pm-6:15pm If these dates and times do not work, please call the to schedule a time. 1
Lamb & Meat Goat Weigh-Ins Lamb & State Fair Meat Goat weigh-ins will be on May 5th, 2018, from 9:00am-11:00am at the Appanoose County Fairgrounds. Be prepared at weigh-in with Scrapie tag numbers, sex and date of birth of each lamb. If you still need to request Scrapie tags, please call 1-866-873-2824. County Fair Sheep: 9:00am-10:00am State Fair Sheep and Meat Goats: 10:00am-11:00am ALL meat goats going to State Fair need to be weighed-in. State Fair sheep and goats will be retinal eye scanned at the time of weigh-in. The certification fee is $5.00 per animal. There will be an additional fee of $5.00 per head for the same animals wishing to be verified for AK-SAR-BEN. There is a limit of 15 head of sheep that may be weighed in for State Fair. You may weigh-in 8 sheep for County Fair, but these 8 will count towards your 15 for State. County Fair Meat Goats: All county fair meat goats will be weighed in on the first day of the County Fair. All tags must be in goats by May 15! State Fair Meat Goats: There is a limit of 20 head of meat goats that may be weighed in for State Fair. If you weigh-in for State Fair, they may also be shown at the County Fair as part of your 10 total head of goats. Livestock Identification Forms All animals coming to the Appanoose County Fair MUST be recorded on an identification sheet by 5:00pm on May 15th, 2018! This includes Market Beef (taken care of at weigh-ins), Breeding Beef, Cow/Calf, Bucket/Bottle Calves, Bucket/ Bottle Lambs, Horses, Market Sheep (taken care of at weigh-ins), Breeding Sheep, Swine, Dairy Cows, Dairy Goats, Meat Goats, Poultry, Rabbits, Dogs, Cats, Pets. We will be mailing the Identification Forms to you! Your leader will receive a request sheet in the mail to fill out what id forms you need, so if you aren t going to be at your next meeting, please contact your leader to provide that information! STATE FAIR LIVESTOCK MUST BE ENTERED INTO 4-H ONLINE BY MAY 15TH! Appanoose County Fair Pre-Entry Pre-Entry Dates have been set for Friday June 29th, Monday, July 2nd and Tuesday, July 3rd! Pre-Fair Entry can be done anytime after June 15 this year. The days listed above are designated solely to prefair entry. There will be extra staff on hand to assist you during these days! 2
2018 Appanoose County Fair Queen Pageant Contestants must be 16 to 21 years old as of August 9, 2018. Contestants must be an active member of at least one worthwhile organization and be a resident of Appanoose County. Participants must be present for the photo session, able to preside over the 2018 Appanoose County Fair, and represent Appanoose County at the State Fair, August 9-19 in order to be eligible. Applications may be picked up at the or Iowa Trust and Savings Bank in Centerville. Communication Event The 2018 Communication Event will be held on Tuesday, July 10th, 2018 at 9:00am. This event will be held at the First United Methodist Church. As always, please call the at 641-856-3885 if you have any questions about this or any other events! Clothing Event The Appanoose County Clothing Event has been scheduled for Thursday, July 12th, 2018. The event will be held at the Appanoose County Fairgrounds. Seniors: 8:00am Intermediates: 9:30am Juniors: 1:00pm Youth Project Loans from FSA The United States Department of Agriculture s Farm Service Agency, FSA, makes operating loans to individual rural youth, aged 10-20, to establish and operate income producing projects. These projects must be of modest size and be initiated, developed and carried out by rural youth participating in 4-H or FFA. Each project must be part of an organized and supervised, program of work. It must be planned and operated with the assistance of the youth s parents and organization leaders or advisor, produce sufficient income to repay the loan and provide the youth with practical business and Education experience. These loans can finance nearly any kind of agricultural income producing project with an annual or term repayment plan, depending on the specific project. Maximum loan amount is $5000 per individual with a fixed interest rate. The interest rate changes periodically, but once the loan is closed, the rate will not change. In continued support of our area youth in agriculture, Farmers Bank of Northern Missouri is proud to make agricultural loans available to FFA and 4-H members in our market areas of Northern Missouri and Southern Iowa. In addition to providing financial assistance in their projects, the program can also be a financial education tool. By developing financial statements and cash flows with the students, they can also develop an understanding and evaluate their enterprise performance. FFA & 4-H Loans are subject to the following: FFA & 4-H Youth Ag Loan Program Interest rate is determined by subtracting the student's GPA from a base interest rate, currently 7.00% APR* as of 1/1/18. Base rate is subject to change. Up to a $10,000-line limit can be available for applicable projects. Amounts greater than $10,000 can be reviewed on a case by case basis. Repayment period is dependent on loan purchase. Student must have a qualified co-applicant, unless they are 18 and credit worthy. 3
COW/CALF Calves for the Cow/Calf Project must be born between January 1st and May 1st of 2018 and must be weighed within 3 days of birth by one of our official weighers. Applicants submit essays and other supportive material to win a doeling. Doelings are donated by IDGA members and a selection committee determines the winners. Winners are expected to display their goat at a county fair or youth show, to keep in touch with the donor and to submit an article about their doeling to the IDGA newsletter. Entries for the 2018 IDGA Share-A-Kid Program are due March 15, 2018. If you are interested in applying, visit www.iowadairygoat.org and follow the Youth link! REMINDERS There are still premium checks here at the! If you showed anything at the 2017 County Fair, you received a check. The banks will not cash these after a certain period of time, so please come in TODAY and pick yours up! The Appanoose County CloverKids Program has grown drastically in the past several years. If you know of a child in Kindergarten 3rd grade, suggest CloverKids! CloverKids is an introduction to the 4-H Program and a great way to get started! BUCKET BOTTLE CALVES Calves must be born between January 1st and May 15th of 2018 and must be purchased AND in the possession of the member within 2 weeks of birth. IMPORTANT DATES TO KNOW Appanoose County Fair July 16-21, 2018 Iowa State Fair August 9-19, 2018 BUCKET BOTTLE LAMBS Bucket Bottle Lambs must be in your possession within 14 days after birth. If lambs are still intact, they need to have Scrapie tags. The Bucket Bottle Lamb class will have the same guidelines as the Bucket/Bottle Calf Class.
