FORD AND GEELONG CATS 85 YEARS OF SHARING THE JOURNEY FIESTA0003_VFL

from the oval office Podsiadly proof of the VFL pathway James Podsiadly s AFL debut confirms the VFL as a breeding ground for AFL clubs. For several minutes last weekend, James Podsiadly appeared poised to be Geelong s hero in his longawaited AFL debut. Podsiadly s strong mark and goal put the Cats in front as timeon ticked away. Fairy-tales, though are rare at elite level as Fremantle surged back and snuffed out the perfect ending with a seven-point win. It was, however, a memorable day for not only Podsiadly, but the VFL competition. Eleven seasons, four clubs and a swag of honours after he played his first VFL game, Podsiadly realised a long-held ambition to play AFL. The 2008 Liston Trophy winner, Frosty Miller medalist and multiple best and fairest with Werribee and Geelong showcased his talent with 17 disposals, 11 marks, two goals and as many goal assists. After a decade of persistence, Podsiadly highlighted that he s well equipped to play AFL, a view shared widely among the VFL community. Significantly, the Fremantle and Geelong match contained three VFL players Podsiadly, and Dockers teammates Michael Barlow and Alex Silvagni named in last year s VFL team of the year. While the VFA/VFL has produced many AFL stars along the journey and Hawthorn captains Nick Maxwell and Sam Mitchell both began their respective careers in the VFL there is a growing realisation that the competition can provide a fertile recruiting ground for AFL clubs. Currently, there is 43 on AFL lists who were drafted from the VFL, 38 of which have played at least one AFL match. Through the VFL, many have been able to test themselves in this unique competition where each weekend sees VFL listed players go head-tohead with AFL-listed players. The result is a high standard of football. As we have witnessed in the infancy of season 2010, players who consistently perform to this high standard can readily make the transition to the AFL. With the inclusion next year of Gold Coast into the AFL, followed in 2012 by Greater Western Sydney, AFL recruiting eyes will turn more and more to the VFL to identify prospective recruits. It provides a wonderful opportunity for all VFL players this season to display their talent and, as shown by Podsiadly last weekend, sometimes all you need is an opportunity. The important first game of the VFL season at our new Highgate Reserve in Craigeburn will be held on April 24 with home tenant playing Box Hill. The match kicks off early at 12.30pm. It would be great to see as many supporters as possible welcome in the new venue.
