Head Coach Shannon Reid Shannon Reid begins her fourth year as head coach of the women s basketball team at Brevard College after joining the Tornados coaching staff in the summer of 2008, bringing with her valuable coaching and playing experience to the program. In the 2010-2011 season, the Tornados continued their growth as they continued to set new program milestones under Coach Reid. Brevard recorded their first victory over an NCAA Division I opponent as they went on the road and defeated UNC Asheville, and the Tornados also saw their first player lead the South Atlantic Conference in a statistical category as Micheala Watkins led the conference in steals per game, averaging 2.68. In the 2009-2010 season, Coach Reid led the team to their first Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament berth, knocking off Catawba in the regular season finale to assure post-season play for the first time since the program became an NCAA member. In her first season, Coach Reid s team made the transition to becoming full members of NCAA Division II and the South Atlantic Conference. Coach Reid came to Brevard after one year as the assistant women s basketball coach at the University of Albany, a NCAA Division I program in Albany, New York. While at Albany, Reid was in charge of academics, scheduling, scouting and recruiting. Her on-court duties included guard development and defensive strategies and concepts. Reid received 2008 Coach of the Year honors as the team finished No. 28 in the nation in team steals and posted an 11-7 America East Conference record, which is a program record. Prior to the University of Albany, Reid spent two seasons at Clayton State University in Morrow, Ga., where she helped lead the Lakers to the 2007 NCAA Division II Final Four. Clayton State finished 29-6 overall in 2006-07 and captured the Peach Belt Conference championship. The Lakers, who were ranked as high as fourth nationally, made a second-consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. Prior to her appointment at Clayton State, Reid was an assistant at the University of South Carolina-Aiken, a Division II program in the Peach Belt Conference. Reid helped lead the Pacers to a 19-13 record and an NCAA appearance. Reid played professionally for the Ladies National League in Dublin, Ireland from 2003-04. A native of Hudson, N.C., Reid earned her bachelor s degree in sports management from Pfeiffer University in 2003. Reid, a three-year member of the Pfeiffer women s basketball team, was named Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference (CVAC) Player of the Year and was a two-time all-cvac first-team honoree. Reid scored more than 1,000 career points in her career for the Falcons and led her team to its first-ever NCAA Tournament. She was a two-time team MVP and the university s Athlete of the Year. 2011-2012 Brevard College Women s Basketball Alphabetical Roster No. Name Po. Ht. Yr. SAC Preseason The Tornados were ranked by the coaches of the South Atlantic Conference to finish tenth in the SAC Preseason Poll. Brevard received 13 total votes in the preseason poll. Wingate led the preseason poll, receiving 94 votes and seven first place votes. Lenoir-Rhyne, Tusculum and Catawba also received first place votes. What s New for BC in 2011-2012 The Tornados welcome Coach Christie Cauble to the mix in the 2011-2012 season. A native of Brevard, N.C., she brings with her 15 years of coaching experience in high basketball, volleyball and softball and has coached Junior Olympics Volleyball and AAU basketball in her career. She will help work on improving the Tornados post play as newcomers Taylor Hiatt, Chantel Alford and Lacey Singletary will look to replace BC career record holder Amanda Whitaker in the paint this season. Preseason All-Conference For the first time in modern program history the Tornados begin the season with two players receiving preseason All-Conference laurels as Micheala Watkins and Anna Schlobohm each were named to the All-SAC Preseason Second Team. Watkins and Schlobohm join BC alum Samantha Winn as the only members of the BC women s basketball program to receive preseason accolades from the South Atlantic Conference and will look to guide BC back to the postseason after missing out on the conference tournament last year. Last game for the Tornados... Flippo scores career high 23 in 73-55 victory over Belmont Abbey Belmont, N.C. - Holli Flippo started off her senior campaign in style with a game high 23 points and Micheala Watkins picked up where she left off last season with seven steals as the Tornados overcame Paula Regaldo s double-double to open the 2011-2012 season with a 73-55 victory over Belmont Abbey Saturday evening in the Wheeler Center. The Tornados (1-0) took the lead for good early in the second half on a jumper by Flippo as Brevard shot 60.0 percent (18-30) from the floor in the final 20 minutes of the contest and the BC defense forced 18 Belmont Abbey (0-1) turnovers in the final period as Brevard downed the Crusaders for the second time in three years under head coach Shannon Reid. Flippo was 8-for-12 from the floor in the contest, 5-for-5 in the second half in leading the Tornados with a career high 23 points, breaking her record of 21 set on Jan. 17, 2009 against Wingate University. Micheala Watkins was also in double-digits with 16 points and the 2011 SAC steals leader sent a message to the league stating she was ready to defend her title in leading the Tornados with seven steals as Brevard recorded 17 thefts from the Belmont Abbey offense. Anna Schlobohm was also in double-digits for the Tornados with 13 points on 6-for-8 shooting and added four steals to open the season. Game 1 November 12, 2011 * Belmont, N.C. Brevard 73 Belmont Abbey 55 Regalado led the Crusaders on the day with 16 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, six offensive, to lead all players on the court. Caitlyn Ranson was also in double figures for Belmont Abbey with 11 points, connecting on two of Abbey s three three-pointers in the game as the Crusaders fell in their home opener. Alyssa Cutshaw hit the first basket of the 2011-2012 season, drilling a three-pointer off a Watkins assist and Schlobohm followed with a jumper to put Brevard up 5-0 as the Tornados pressed the advantage early in the contest, going up by 11 at 23-12 on a Watkins layup with 9:31 to play in the first half. A layup by Noel Bullock stemmed the Brevard run and after Lindsay Brendle answered with a layup off the assist from Asheley Watkins, the Crusaders went on a 13-0 run helped by seven made free throws and a Bullock three-pointer to put Belmont Abbey up 28-25 with four minutes to play in the half. The Tornados battled back, tying it up at 28 on a pair of free throws by Flippo, but a three-point play by Kelsey Long offset a Flippo layup at the buzzer to give Crusaders the 31-30 advantage at the break. Schlobohm gave the Tornados the early lead in the second half, hitting a jumper at the 19:00 mark to put BC up 32-2. Following a free throw by Regalado to tie the game up for the third and final time, Brevard responded with a 22-6 run, capped by a three-pointer by Schlobohm to give the Tornados the 54-38 advantage with 11:06 to play. Belmont Abbey continued to fight back, cutting the lead down to 11 points at the 6:56 mark after a three-point play by Regalado and a Ranson three-pointer, but back-to-back baskets by Flippo sparked a 14-3 run, capped by Lacey Singletary s first collegiate basket to give the Tornados their largest lead of the game at 73-51 with 1:14 left in the game as Brevard closed out the season opening 73-55 win in the Wheeler Center. Candice Fritz and Flippo led Brevard with six rebounds apiece, but thanks to Regalado s efforts on the boards, Belmont Abbey held the 36-27 advantage on the glass. The Tornados offset their rebounding disadvantage in forcing 30 Crusaders turnovers against 15 of their own in the victory.
