VMI began the year with a 7-6 victory over No. 19 South Carolina on Friday. Shortstop Nathan Eaton provided much of the scoring, driving in four runs while scoring one of his own in the win. The Gamecocks would battle back and take the next two 7-2 and 9-0. After falling to Rice and No. 15 Virginia, Samford topped No. 22 Central Florida 5-4 on Sunday. Four different Bulldogs recorded an RBI and Austin Eadens led the way with three hits. Furman, which hosted Marist, was the lone SoCon team to get out of the weekend undefeated. The Paladins dominated Marist on Friday (13-4) before defeating the Red Foxes 5-4 and completing a walk-off 7-6 win on Sunday. Preseason favorites Mercer and UNCG both got off to 201 starts. The Bears defeated Bethune-Cookman 13-7, 6-5 before falling 8-6 on Sunday. Much like Mercer, the Spartans topped their opponent, Appalachian State, on Friday and Saturday (10-3, 11-6) before dropping the finale 6-4 on Sunday. ETSU also began the 2018 season 2-1, taking the first two from Northern Kentucky. Junior transfer Micah Kaczor was named the SoCon and Collegiate Baseball Pitcher of the Week after striking out 12 batters in six innings without allowing an earned run in a 6-2 victory. The Citadel and Wofford each began the weekend 1-2. The Citadel opened the Tony Skole era with a 3-0 win over George Mason on Friday while Wofford capped off the weekend with a 4-2 victory over Dayton on Sunday. Western Carolina went 0-3 on the weekend, but return home for a season-long, six-game home stand beginning with Morehead State on Tuesday. Preseason Player of the Year JT Thomas, Sr., C Mercer.357, 62 RBI, 75 H,.454 OBP, 131 TB The Bears Thomas, a transfer from Chattahoochee Valley Community College, batted.357 with 62 RBIs in 2017, hit first year at Mercer. Thomas led Mercer in in hits (75), slugging percentage (.624), on-base percentage (.454) and total bases (131). A native of Woodstock, Georgia, Thomas was named to the All- SoCon first team and was a two-time SoCon player of the week. In addition to earning 2017 Perfect Game/ Rawlings All-America honorable mention, Thomas was named to both the 2018 Collegiate Baseball Preseason All-America first team and the NCBWA Preseason All-America first team. Preseason Pitcher of the Year Josh Winder, Jr., RHP VMI 7-6, 3.59 ERA, 112 K, 19 BB, 107.2 IP VMI s Winder went 7-6 with a 3.59 ERA and 112 strikeouts in 2017. As a sophomore, Winder was named to the All-SoCon second team and set the school record for innings pitched (107 2/3). Winder had six games in which he struck out 10 or more batters and was named the Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week after throwing a complete game, three-hit shutout against Samford. Winder also led the league in fewest walks allowed, giving up just 16 free passes all year. SoCon Baseball
